Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains region is just as spectacular as Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. In this video we sample the geography of the Bighorns Mountains. We explore, hike and camp at several less visited locations in the Bighorns Mountains region.
-------------------------------------
➤ Locations in this video:
- Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area: Incredible views of the Bighorn Canyon, historic 19th century ranch structures and Pryor Mountains Wild Horse
- Abandoned Black Mountain Lookout Tower in Bighorn National Forest: Hike to the long abandoned fire lookout tower that was built in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
- Tongue River Canyon in Bighorn National Forest: Hike along shear limestone walls and swim in the ice cold river.
I love the geography of the Bighorns. We'll hike, enjoy the views and take a swim in the ice cold Tongue River. We'll also visit two of my favorite campgrounds in Bighorn National Forest: Tie Flume and Prune Creek.

@@utahdan231 It's so alive with native spirit, it would be a shame if it ever were to become more popular. Locals have respect for the land. Tourists...usually don't.

Here in Wyoming, we close the gate behind us. Enjoy the trip, but let everyone know it's horrible... keeps things quiet ;)

If you’re pulling a trailer or driving a motor coach… remember, in Wyoming it’s illegal to block more than three vehicles behind you. You are required to pull off at the nearest parking area and allow traffic to pass.

My wife and I just did Porcupine falls and Paradise Falls. Left Billings, went to Lovell and on through the bighorns. Great hikes, a couple of moose and amazing scenery. Of course we always take our pontoon to Bighorn Canyon

I worked in Yellowstone for three summers. And if you want to go to Yellowstone, its best to go after August 15th or there about. Because, that is when lots of kids have to go back to school. And College starts in lots of places. Also all the services are still available in Yellowstone still. Plus, if you like to hike, grab a lunch from one of the Cafeteria's and hit the trail. You will be alone after about a half mile, except for other hard core hikers. So don't let the "Crowds" fool you.

I agree that the Big Horns aren't as popular as Yellowstone and the Tetons. But they the Big Horns are very popular now. I've lived in Buffalo for 43 years. We use to go up and hardly see anyone. That has changed with social media. The Big Horns are very well known now. I bet the water was cold. I've swam in some of those creek holes and high mountain lakes. Great job on your video. That area is beautiful. We have a couple fire lookouts in the southern half of the Big Horns. I did a video on one of them.

Thanks for the kind words! You make a good point about increased visitors. The Bighorns are less known but certainly more crowded than back in the day. The same is true pretty much everywhere here in Colorado. Everywhere is more crowded. Cheers!

This was a surprise highlight of our trip. Visited Ten Sleep then Highway 16, camping near Meadowlark Lake. Be sure to take Crazy Woman Canyon Road - that was fun.

Right on! We’re saving Crazy Woman for our next trip. Also eager to hike deeper into the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Got shut out due to a summer snow storm last year in early July. Cheers!

The bighorns used to be really cool, now they are overcrowded with those making the trip to Yellowstone, same crowds, people are starting to chose these places over Colorado though, it seems to be getting less crowded

We love the Bighorns but they definitely are getting more crowded. Although- I do have to say- if you are looking for the Tetons you might be disappointed with the bighorns. A lot of the places to get to from the highway are full of trees.

Hi. I appreciate your comment and I've given it some thought. I don't doubt the Bighorns are getting more crowded these days. But I am still able to get a National Forest campsite in the heart of the Bighorns in peak season. I'd be hard pressed to find available campsites in the Tetons and Yellowstone. 😀 As for disappointment, I understand your point. As you say, it depends on what people are looking for. If you just want to look at the mountains from afar then it's hard to beat the grandeur of the Tetons. But if you want to hike and explore, then how can you be disappointed in the Bighorns? The Cloud Peak Wilderness is amazing and there's so many off the beaten path places, as I've tried to feature in this video. Cheers!
