Yelverton to Tavistock (via route 27, Gem Viaduct and Grenofen Tunnel)

Filmed Sunday 22nd March 2015. The route starts at Yelverton and follows a purpose-built cycleway down to Horrabridge Station. At this point the route uses the old disused GWR railway trackbed, taking in Magpie Viaduct, Gem Viaduct (rebuilt in 2012) and the Brunel designed Grenofen Tunnel. After emerging from the tunnel, the route meanders through a housing estate and industrial park on the outskirts of Tavistock, before crossing over the river Tavy towards the historic town centre itself.

Seemed a bit different in around 1970 as 8or9 year olds when myself and mate Andrew Laverton plus maybe also John Goddard rashly tackled the railway tunnel, armed only with a box of matches for illumination starting from Yelverton station end. We had loss of light due to damp matches after getting about a third of the way through and we got spooked , running the remaining half mile to the end. The apparent light at the end of the tunnel was unfortunately just gaps in the corrugated iron and barbed wire barricade. We weren't going back, so broke through that and promptly disturbed some angry dogs, so scrambled up the embankment to escape. Funny how parents seem more protective of kids these days !

Yes, it is a purpose built Route, but not just a cycle way. It is a Shared Route for all non-motor traffic.

Nice to see that route again, after some years. I've cycled it a few times, while I lived for a few months in Horrabridge. That part of the Moors is truly stunning, with the Tavistock valley with its woodland and a footpath along the fast flowing river Tavy. Such variety.

I agree, it's a lovely part of Devon. Lots of wonderful cycling and walking routes. So much history. I admit that it would be nice if the railway still ran this route, but the current usage is a good enough compromise for all to use!

How much of this is not tarmaced? Considering it with a road bike rather than the A386, but on 25mm tyres..

seventeesweremagic could get a car down there..it's a path, cycle track...and the road yes there are roads FFS makes no odds still nothing to see but the path and the roads. Btw I have smelly wind 💨
