Yemen: Land of the legendary Queen of Sheba, who met King Solomon in Jerusalem

With film shot during Wendell Phillips’ 1950 expedition and footage of the collection housed in the museum in Sana’a, this documentary is a fascinating insight into a long-gone civilization and a queen who lives on in the cultural memory of her country.

The name of the Queen of Sheba conjures a vision of eastern exoticism. There is no indisputable evidence that she ever existed, though a Bible story tells how she journeyed to Jerusalem, bearing gold and incense, to visit King Solomon and to see for herself whether tales of his great wisdom were true. The people of Yemen remain convinced that the Queen of Sheba is a historical, not a legendary, figure and that she ruled over the ancient kingdom of Saba, now part of their country, which lies in the extreme south of the Arabian peninsula.
In the past fifty years, several foreign archaeological expeditions have sought to discover more about Yemen’s enigmatic past and the Yemenites themselves are now endeavoring to repossess their heritage. The museum of the University of Sana’a, the modern-day capital of Yemen, is assembling a fine collection of artefacts that have been found during excavations around the country. But this largely desert country has been reluctant to yield up its treasures. Several excavation sites which have had to be abandoned have rapidly become covered over once more by sand.

Thank you for mentioning the ancient temple of the moon god called Yeha, which reminds me of the The Tetragrammaton, the four-letter Hebrew theonym יהוה‎, usually transliterated YHWH, which people mistranslate to Yahweh or Jehovah by adding extra letters (vowels) to add in between which are not apart of Hebrew. Hebrew doesn't have vowels as part of the alphabet system. In fact, since Hebrew is one of the most ancient languages still spoken around the world, the vowel system was never a part of the Hebrew alphabet. The real pronunciation has been lost over time due to not uttering the holy name due to a fear of accidentally taking God’s name in vain, so the Jews stopped saying it out loud altogether and instead when reading scripture aloud, the Jews substituted the tetragrammaton YHWH with the word Adonai (“Lord”). When the Masoretes added vowel pointings to the text of the Hebrew Bible around the eighth century CE, they gave the word YHWH the vowels of Adonai, to remind the reader to say Adonai instead. Later Biblical scholars mistook this vowel substitution for the actual spelling of YHWH and interpreted the name of God as Jehovah. *Hebrew is read from right to left, as was Himyaritic, the ancient language of Yemen which was also written from right to left. Ancient Brahmi as was Indus script might possibly have been too. Thanks again.

There were 4 white Europeans on the flight and we were ordered by Yemeni men to the front .yay-way more foot room. I was the the only white European female on th flight and it was a connecting flight to Bombay/mumbia india. It was amazing ow ast they sorted themselves out, once they got rid of us in actually, ino the best seats!! Yemenis re different and refuse t conform to BIg Brother = gppd on them in many ways!!

The silly thing is that Saba probably didn't conform at all to the current borders of the area, which were drawn arbitrarily by the British in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is likely that Saba included parts of both Yemen and Ethiopia. Both countries have strong evidence of the presence of the same culture, and to add to it, the Ethiopian kings and emperors can trace their lineage right the way back to Menelik and Solomon. The last of the line was Emperor Haile Salasi who was assassinated not so very many years ago (recently enough that I remember it happening). There must have been some reason for Solomon's decedents to have relocated to Ethiopia. It's unlikely that they'd go there just for fun and giggles. But if it was a part of Saba, it would all make sense. It would also make sense in regard to the Ark of the Covenant, which it is said was spirited away from Jerusalem when the Romans destroyed the second temple, ended up in Ethiopia.

.. Saba was only settled in the 7th century, 300 years after the Queen of Sheba. In reality, the Queen of Sheba was the daughter of King Sheba - Pharaoh Pa-Sheba-khaieniut. Saba or Sheba means ‘star’, so the Queen of Sheba was the Queen of the Stars, the Queen of Heaven - an incarnation of lsis-Aphrodite. See book ‘Solomon, Pharaoh of Egypt’. R

To the north of Aden and near the old border between North and South Yemen was a Jewish community who lived atop a tall and steep rock pillar . There was no water on top where the village was situated so the women had to make a steep and circular journey around the pillar of rock everyday .

Rastafarians also believe former emperor of Ethiopia was a descendant of Solomon and Sheba.... But in any case - those remains of her must be many layers below what they have found when you just account for the times involved.

The professor is incorrect in that Yemen is not the only Nation that claims Queen Saba as its monarch. It is a bone of contention between Yemen and Ethiopia as we Ethiopians, with a history extending beyond 3000 years also have historical sites that include her palace, similar Sabean writing, plus oral and written history that tells us our Queen travelled to Jerusalem to meet with King Solomon-and later gave birth to a son, Minelik I. Without Minelik 1there would be no Ark of the Covenant in St Mary of Zion's church in Axum. We believe her empire was extensive, based in Axum but extending east, across the red sea to include Yemen and what is now Saudi Arabia, to the west as far as Nigeria. Considering the physical resemblance Yemenis, Ethiopians and the Nubians in Egypt share, I believe we were once part of one great empire presided over by Queen Saba/Makeda.

I have often wondered if there was a way to prove or discern whether or not Sheba was from Yemen or Ethiopian. I think it makes sense that Solomon would've found a somewhat distant relative more appealing both from a looks standpoint and a spiritual standpoint, than a far more distant relative in an Ethiopian woman. This may be viewed as complete conjecture on my part, but it is my personal conviction. I am 7 generations removed from my nearest Jewish ancestor and far more attracted to Jewish women or women more closely related to me, than woman who are more distantly related, than either Jewish women or gentile women more closely related to myself. People are more able to relate to someone more like themselves and hold an appreciation of something different, yet with a distinct familiarity they can appreciate, in my opinion. She was more than likely a descendant of one of Abraham's other children, besides Isaac or Ishmael.

They had built great dams in the mountains overlooking their cities, a great feats of engineering considering the kingdom existed over 4000 yrs back. The narration says that they were sent multiple prophets whom they followed for a time then eventually cast out & grew in arrogance & challenged. They were warned of impending doom. Their queen then had a dream where she saw her kingdom engulfed in fire, while also being drowned by floods. A dream her council pushed aside as hallucination. Subsequently, God commanded the mountain ridge & the earth to crack open, releasing larva while the quakes demolished the dams destroying them by both fire & water! Today Yemen is earthquake country beleaguered by large quakes every 50 yrs or so, light tremors are common place every now & then. This is the story also narrated of the southern Arabs, the remnant descendants of those people, who were able to flee north to Mecca & Jizan areas of south west Arabia. Archaeologists need to confirm this, as Arabs rarely lie about their own history.

I wonder why they do not replant the frankincense tree, or maybe they do? Such a wonderful resource and the essential oil of frankincense will cell cycle arrest cancers, applied topically. Do not lose this, Mother Earth! I think the marketplace will have frankincense in greater demand. I wish you could build a forest of frankincense! God Bless!

Do not forget that the blacks acquired the Himyarite Arabic language, the Himyarite Arabic predicate, the Semitic culture, the Semitic religion "Christianity, Judaism", and the Semitic history through the Yemeni influence on them over thousands of years. You must not forget that those in East Africa who have a genetic connection with Yemen are called "Darudians" and are of the E lineage. If you look at them, they will not appear to you Negroes, but an Arab with black skin color and long curly hair.

They are not mistaken. Queen Sheba might be surely their Queen as well not only for Ethiopian. It is possible. Look at them. They look like Africans/Ethiopians. There’s no difference. The land has been divided with different names. It’s hard to tell who is who.

Yeah cuz she was Yemeni like it of not our history proves it time and time again and ya was ruled by us for over a thousand of years so some similarities would be expected also the only time Ethiopia ruled over yemen was after the death of queen sheba/saba by hundreds of years and only ruled for 60 years till the Yemenis with backing from the Persians kicked ya out.also the dark skinned Yemenis are highly believed to be Ethiopians that couldn’t travel back to Africa hence why all of Yemenis with a lighter skinned color belongs to tribes that would proudly tell you their family tree all the way back to queen Sheba’s time and before while the dark skinned ones wouldn’t be able to and are not considered a tribe
