+T Davis ADORE IT! I wanted to see this move when it came out more than anything else so I skipped school for the first and only time as a 15 year old with my cousin to watch this movie (ironically to see a girl who wanted to attend school more than anything else lol). Divine, Exquisite Queen Barbara never disappoints. I bawled my eyes out here and during so many other moments. And for the record, I'm not Jewish. This movie transcends everything but is like a love letter to Jewish culture - and I LOVE CULTURE :) It's so lovely a film - I highly recommend it :)

lucy rosevelt I'm right there with ya lol! I'm African American and I grew up on this film!. I remember being in high school and they were playing this movie on HBO which was very popular back then. Anyway they were playing it over and over and I decided to watch it and I completely fell in love with it. My mom had already been a fan of Ms. Streisand from 'A Star is Born" back in the 70's she played that sound track *all the time* lol! Now I play this soundtrack on my Mp3 and couldn't go a day without hearing a song...

How can a Jewish woman call herself Jewish if she doesn’t study the Torah as well?
@talmoskowitz52213 жыл бұрын
Women were taught Bible, prayers, and dinim (practical applications of the law). But education was not uniform. The poor didn't have the same access. My grandmother knew much of Tanach by heart. Many women knew the entire book of Psalms by heart. Poor boys were generally given a chance, more often than the girls, but if they didn't show an early aptitude, they were apprenticed. The Netziv (R' N. Berlin) was nearly put to work at an early age, until he overheard his parents discussing his lackluster school performance. He redoubled his efforts. The poverty in the Pale of settlement was indescribable. Look at the Roman Vishniac photos. Some few Rabbis did teach their daughters Talmud if they showed remarkable aptitude. As the Enlightenment emerged in eastern Europe, it became obvious that secularism would pose a threat to Jewish piety. Sarah Schneier founded the Bays Yaakov curriculum of intensive Torah study for women. The movement was cut short in the Holocaust until it was replanted in the US.
