CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Yentl (Barbra Streisand) belts out "Piece of Sky" to celebrate how far she's come and the possibilities that await her in America.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Barbra Streisand's directorial debut, Yentl, is a musical adaptation of a story by the beloved Jewish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer. Yentl (Streisand) is a young woman who wants nothing more than to study religious scripture. She is denied that possibility because she is a woman. She moves, passes herself off as a male named Anshel, and then begins her studies. She becomes close to fellow student Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin), eventually falling in love with him, although she can not reveal her true self as she would then be expelled. Avigdor is in love with Hadass (Amy Irving), but religious law forbids him from marrying her. Avigdor attempts to fix Anshel up with Hadass, leading to Hadass falling in love with Anshel. Yentl received four Academy Award nominations, including two Best Song nods.

Someone once described Streisand's voice as smooth as "mercury on dry ice". When Yentl was released, this scene was criticized as out of step with the rest of the film. For me, time has proven otherwise. I sat in the Ziegfield theatre in NYC 35 years ago when Yentl opened in very limited release and was amazed. Today, to me, this scene represents the very pinnacle of Streisand's greatest artistic achievement. Dreamers like Streisand achieve the unachievable by simply believing nothing is impossible. What an inspiration.

@@princepeterwolf I don't think they considered it out of step , it's mainly that she made it a film with an open ending that sounded more optimistic than Bashevis singer's short story where Yentl simply disappears in a very pessimistic ending very much in line with the rest of his work. Critics, who were always like knives out against anything streisand, felt she had deformed the meaning of his text and Bashevis singer himself was very vocal about it in the papers. To me , she mainly took an argument in a short story she felt was very interesting and made it her own. It is what is called an " adaptation".

She didn't because some critics said 'she didn't portray a man well'. She never was meant to play a man though, but they didn't understand that. She was meant to play someone trying to fool people (in a time where people were more naive) and being scared as heck for it. Which she did wonderfully. The scene where avigdor tries to take her for swimming is one of her most compelling in film. IMO it's her strongest acting performance, even more than 'Funny Girl' or 'The Way We Were'.

Lovely movie. Saw it again after more thsn 30 years and it is still as magical as it was then. Have never understood why she was panned so much when this movie came out. Always thought she was in her most natural element both as an actress and songstress in this movie. What a voice...it;s not just about having a great voice ..but about its uniqueness...about character and feeling ..and warmth..the elements that draw you in and make you relate to the person singing it. Judy Garland had it in spades and Streisand, in my view, remains unmatched in this regard

Deliberate reference. In both cases, the character has finally shaken off the shackles of conventional roles and pursued independent visions. "Don't Rain on my Parade," means, "Don't criticize my choices." And, "Piece of Sky," means, "Don't limit my opportunities." These resonate with Streisand personally because she has always pursued her own choices and never limited her opportunities. She has taken control of her own life, as these two characters have taken control of theirs.

International treaties require English w latin characters. That ship is a short range steamer specifically for Jews from the Pale of Settlement, hence the Star of David on the stern. It would go to Southampton or Cherbourg, where the passengers would either apply for a visa to stay or go on to New York. It's how my great great great grandparents got from their island in the Baltic to the USA.

Interesting that she is looking back at where the boat has gone rather than at front of boat toward her future. Just realized this. It makes sense in terms of what she is letting go of. Second reaction: the people on the boat are those who lived. They had made it through the antisemitism of the time, which depending on the country could have included pogroms. And even more : also due to their decision to come to America, they and their descendants would escape the Holocaust decades later. Yet neither they nor those who stayed behind could have known and both made decisions right for them at the time. But I do think of this when I realize my grandparents were among that generation who made that decision. They came here in early 1900s. And thus I am here. Yet the communities they left behind were wiped out. We need to say no to any form of hatred.
