@Don't call me Clown, Moustache I have to say that as a white woman from the southern states, I've never walked in the shoes of a typical member of the BLM movement. But I've definitely witnessed racism from my own family and friends. I will never judge them (BLM) for standing up for themselves and trying to make life better for themselves and their children. Our country is a beautiful place and we enjoy a lot of freedoms (I love electricity ❤ I've been weeks without it following hurricanes several times in my life and I know how to appreciate it!) But I would never deny anyone the chance to exercise their freedom to improve their lives. To do so smacks of selfishness

I have some qualms with BLM and the way some within do things as a Blk women and I love my country but there's no denying we have some srs issues to resolve here. America is better then NK for sure but its far from perfect moreso for certains parts of the population. We can do and be better. Nothing wrong with fighting to be ever better then you currently are.

@Don't call me Clown, Moustache While I can see where you’re coming from, I don’t necessarily agree. For those who’ve never experienced oppression, I’m included at least in the race part of this, there’s curtains over our eyes. There are areas in our very country who will never get to see the lights of New York. Or get to have electricity whenever they want, and therefore watch shows. Who can’t go to the police because they’ll most likely be blamed themselves, or be ignored. Who get to wear only what they can, and they can’t afford to wear nice jeans, or earrings. Oppression comes in different shapes and sizes, and we can’t compare purple to blue and say that blue is wrong because it’s not purple. Just because others oppression is worse doesn’t mean that any oppression less worse doesn’t exist. Like the comment above you said, appreciate what you have, but don’t let that stop us from getting even better.

For many people who live in an authoritarian regime, freedom of speech is the last thing they thought about freedom. To be honest, it is quite useless compared to freedom of religion, or basic human right...right to file a complaint about a police officer ....etc. FYI, I am from Hong Kong, We used to have freedom of speech, but we lost it in 2020.

@@kkkwan18 I live in israel where freedom of speech is taken advantage of all the time. Throwing the prime minister in jail for a crime in office happens very frequently. Last Saturday there were protests going on right outside my window. I literally can't imagine being arrested for saying the leader isn't good. No one ever really likes whoever it is is in power, but that's why freedom of speech is so important. In daily life I understand why wearing jeans and watching movies are more relevant than discussing your political views, but I very much appreciate having the ability to go protest at any moment. (With a mask, of course. ;P) Does not having freedom of speech affect your daily life at all? Was it something you and your friends had to get used to, or did it come naturally? Can you leave a comment on a KZbin video saying anything negative about your government? Would you want to? (Please don't answer that if it could get you in trouble. Also sorry for all the questions, I'm just really interested in the topic. ;))

@@raayaswidler1049 I find it so interesting thinking about having restricted speech, coming from the US. Wit how things are right now, being able to talk about it openly with others creates a sense of solidarity even for the least powerful. Granted, no country is going to take US refugees if it comes to that given how we've basically tried to destroy every country we can exert power over, but... right now I'm so thankful for our right to protest but even just our right to talk about it on the internet.

The way she talked about the simple pleasure of being able to order food and have all these different things brought to your door and saying that is what made her decide that America is a paradise makes me teary eyed. The look of joy on her face was incredible

Yeaaah, but..... number 2 of 5? I get why electricity/city lights was #1, the impact is forceful and immediate, possibly felt even whilst still on the way to your first city, visible from afar.... but food delivery coming before/higher than things like rule of law, freedom of speech and access to emergency services did make me raise an eyebrow, to say the least!

I don't know - we're not talking about access to food here, which is one thing, we're talking about delivery of food and weighing it up against the other things that were mentioned. Perhaps you're right, perhaps that would be more impactful to someone who had routinely experienced borderline starvation - if so, it is an eye-opener for sure. I know if I was given the choice between food delivery (as distinct from access to food) versus freedom of speech, rule of law or access to emergency services, what I would choose.

I feel like a spoiled jerk. My parents immigrated from the Philippines and worked their tails off to make it here in America. I do work hard too, but I often forget to appreciate this luxurious American life I was born into. And by “luxurious,” I mean electricity, clean water, food, not getting killed or enslaved senselessly. You know-luxury. Thank you Ms. Park for reminding us to value our comfortable American lives. We’re so comfortable here that we can complain about anything and everything. You’re right: this is a type of paradise.

Oh my goodness. She talks about the most basic things that we take for granted. I wasn’t surprised by her reaction to electricity or food delivery. But her response to Rule of law, self determination and freedom of speech got me all choked up. Things we take for granted as a fundamental part of being American were revelations. Wow. I experienced something similar coming to the US from a very poor city in South America the FIRST day I was here, I ate enough food that I wasn't hungry anymore I almost cried, I had so much sadness accumulated somewhere in me from the years of hunger

I think it's nice to hear her be all thankful but I personally don't love it, it just really shows us how much North Korea is actually going through without them realizing it fully. And I'm saying this as someone who's... less well off in a poorer country, but not to this level of extreme.

The opposite actually, she escaped for material reasons because she didn’t know any type of deeper or more meaningful freedoms existed. She risked her life for jeans and movies, without even a dream that freedom like this was possible. It’s mindblowing. It shatters my heart knowing how many people are under that level of control, with not even a hope for anything better because they don’t even know it’s out there to begin with. The evil of someone who would maintain that is on a whole other level.

Born and raised in Small Town Oklahoma. When stationed in Afghanistan I saw for the first time what poverty and oppression looks like. I can't imagine North Korea. This beautiful soul has helped me remind myself of all the blessings we have. Actually made me a bit ashamed of myself for getting angry about things like truck won't start, house needs repair, gas prices are up, and so on.

@@madisonm4880 Not sure why you read it that way. After leaving a repressive regime, she can now dress as she pleases. She’s happy and comfortable dressing in “Western” clothes, but she protects her modesty. That was my comment. I see American kids with overbearing parents (like my own life) rebel against how they were raised. I don’t expect her to go crazy with tattoos and piercings, but I could understand an extreme response to freedom from anyone in her situation. In my case, I no longer go to church twice on Sunday, every week even when traveling. Now I go... never.

Wether it's coward or not to hit someone should not play a role. Hurting someone is the important thing here. Even if your wife was a 2 meters tall martial arts champion and it would be incredibly courageous to mess with her it would be absolutely wrong to hit her in a fight or even try it. Same goes for women brutalizing men, something that definitely exists but is never talked about because it's regarded shameful for men to be hit by women.

BUT the vast majority of domestic violence is men hitting their wives (and sometimes kids) so it is important to emphasize that so the society can change for the better. Again, no one should use violence against others but there are underlying issues that make the world unproportionally dangerous for girls and women.

She also starved her whole childhood, and into the beginning of her adulthood, so if you listen to her tell her stories she doesn't do anything or go anywhere without getting or bringing food with her now. She talks about how she always has protein bars and stuff with her because you never know if you might need it. Like, truly it's probably some kind of trauma thing (seriously, not being mean) but if you hear her whole story, no one could blame her for it.

@@Gee5425 that's interesting. I have a severe fear of being somewhere without food in case I need it. I always have a bar with me. I was a ballerina and my diet was tightly controlled and I went periods where I wasn't eating enough. Then in college I didn't have enough money for food, so some days I'd just have like a bag of light microwave popcorn for food. Maybe a can of tuna. And now I have a health condition that causes severe pain if I don't eat frequently enough. I can't imagine her level of trauma, but it feels comforting that someone else does the same thing that I do. My situation might be minor in comparison, but I feel like I can understand that fear a little and hope she finds healing from some of her traumas!

My mom comes from a poor family in Mexico. She said that they were pretty much vegans, since they only ate beans and homemade tortillas. That now she feels so guilty for complaining to my grandma of eating the same thing everyday. If they had meat it was special, and they would just get a small piece. My two older uncles stopped going to school around 10-12 years-old to work and help feed the family since my grandfather got hit buy a truck. And now this generation we're university students/university grads. And I have the privilege of deciding to go plant-based... The beating the wives thing is normal there too. My mom said the police would not take the women seriously and dismiss it something between couples. Especially in the small, remote towns. Many men that come from Mexico as older said they want to go to Mexico to beat their wives. II thought my aunt was joking because why would a husband say that. They know they can't do that here in the States so they control themselves. My cousin came here as newly wed and it looked like a good marriage. They went back to Mexico and her husband hit her on their first argument. She luckily saw how that is not normal in the States, packed up her bags and came back to the States leaving him behind.

It used to be the same in Italy and I guess in the rest of Europe. Meat was something that if you were lucky you could see once a week, with the whole family around it and you ended up just eating some bread dipping in it's sauce. Many people were anemic.

It means she wants to stay here and be part of our culture. Studies show that slang and dialect is what we pick up first when we intend or desire to be part of a culture. People who are travelling through or don't think they will put down roots subconsciously never use the local dialect. It's the subtle communication cues that we subconsciously depend on to be included in the tribe. LOL... Probably weren't looking for a lexicon lecture... sorry. I just find that stuff fascinating. You are absolutely right I'm syrian and my parents had to go such a dangerous road to get to Germany just so we can live a normal life They've seen people die infront of them and I'm so thankful nothing bad happened to them In Syria people are literally starving, no water, no food, no electricity, no doctors If you are sick you are sick to death If you have corona, well you have corona Just the political people have the money I wasn't in Syria for many years but i have seen so many things that I wish I can forget And still, I hear german teenagers like "oh Germany sucks" I'm like!!! Dude be thankful Germany is like heaven in comparison to Syria!! It may not be the best place in the world, but at least you are safe, you have food, you don't have to worry about starving or being sick to death and most important you are FREE!

My brother is an immigrant and he told me how shocked he was when he was in a car accident and a police office rear ended him by accident - that the officer didn’t beat him. Corruption was so normal when he was growing up in Haiti. He realize what a different place this was

@@SenorJuan2023 how ignorant are you? I’m not saying that the US doesn’t have corruption, all societies do, but the US has some of the lowest rates of corruption in the world. You cannot say that a country which doesn’t have officers commonly beat people in the streets is more corrupt than one that does. These countries that have to deal with corruption to the point that it’s become normalized are far more corrupt than we are. It’s one thing to understand we have a problem and want to deal with it, but you shouldn’t exaggerate our problem so much that you make light of another persons situation. This man was shocked not to be beat in the streets by a cop. While racial biases are an issue and we do have instances of police brutality, as a whole, we don’t expect to be randomly beat by a police officer. Try to make change in an unjust society, but don’t disregard the privileges we have.

I know this is hard to grasp as you’ve only lived here your whole life so this is your only reference point, but for people coming from other countries, the corruption is so seeped into every facet of life that it’s literally impossible to live an honest life. That’s how it is back in India too. And don’t just say “it’s more sophisticated in America” when that’s simply not true. Just because a country is poorer does not mean there isn’t sophisticated corruption at higher levels. I would suggest doing some research and opening your mind & being grateful for what you have been blessed with in life because you have it better than 90% of the world. Doesn’t mean the US shouldn’t work on it’s problems but let’s be real here. The Meuller investigation indicted numerous people and over 10 of them were within Trump’s administration. That’s the HIGHEST level of govt going straight to jail & being criminally prosecuted for their crimes. In India, politicians are regularly accused of MURDER and they don’t go to jail let alone pay a single cent for a fine!! You have absolutely NO idea or any sense of rationality to how corrupt most of the world is bc you’ve never lived elsewhere. You’re blessed

We have MAJOR industries engaged in massive fraud and scams with NO criminal penalties (e.g. Wall St. 2008). Are the folks that have sponsored Yeomni over the tears, people that have interviewed her (David Ruben, Jordan Peterson, Patrick Bet-David, etc.) that are sophisticated, media savvy individuals not prone to putting their reputation on the line promoting a fraud, hoodwinked? Beyond these individuals her story has most likely been vetted by South Korean intelligence agencies. So my question to the naysayers is how much vetting of those folks attacker her credibility have you done? Almost the entire international community has condemned NK for horrendous acts of inhumanity. I give Yeonmi 10x more credibility than these random individuals with unclear motivations condemning her while in the process minimizing the hardships and horrors of live in NK.

Does it mean it's easier to get a job or run a buisness or get an increase in pay when you work hard compared to other countries. Why isn't there academic pressure on students like in asian countries where the marksheet determines the future of an individual with many americans going as far as disregarding college degrees entirely.

@T 2020 Just like any other developed country working hard and making correct choices leads to winning. Working hard and not investing in money or education in high demand fields is also not smart. As an immigrant child my parents worked in factories, went to night school, got better and better jobs as they increased their skills and education. My brothers and I ended working hard and got into prestigious universities and have PhDs/Doctorals etc in high demand fields now living a great life. No other countries can allow such fast turn around and sharp rises in classes as America.

I wish the people who are constantly moaning about how shit society is would watch these videos. Yeonmi reminds us that we have it really good - I have been so worried since people are pushing for things like defunding the police and stuff. I am so happy that she escaped North Korea, but listing to her describe what it's like there broke my heart for the people still stuck there. @@lemonademegan yes exactly, but sensory overload or overstimulation is about the senses, one often gets a headache and nausea similarly, and vertigo is about balance and dizziness and one often feels like theyre might fall or collapse? everyones different but the experiences can be similar. i am autistic so i have experienced sensory overload and overstimulation but i have only read about vertigo

Ever seen the satellite picture of North Korea vs South Korea at night? Should be easy to find online. It's a real eye opener. South Korea is ablaze with light, especially around Seoul. North Korea is totally dark except for the capitol city, Pyongyang, and a few scattered concentration camps.

When I lived in Delhi, India, in 1967, it was not uncommon for the electricity to simply go out for an hour or more, once or even twice a week. We had candles handy and went on as though nothing had happened. We got more sleep. Of course, we didn't have computers then that shut down...

I kind of have two reactions to this.... First, I remember finding a list on KZbin called Top 10 Worst Countries in the World. In the comments, a lot of people seemed to think that the United States should've been on the list (of course it wasn't), and a few even said it should have been number one on the list. I feel like none of the people who said that ever watched a video like this one or heard someone like you talking about their experiences coming here from a place where the leader is basically the law and you don't have the freedoms you have here. Second, I feel kind of humbled. I was born and raised here in the United States, and a lot of the things you're talking about are things I've taken for granted my whole life (though I admit this pandemic did give me a greater appreciation for food delivery). I find myself wondering why I was blessed to be born in a free country while so many others weren't.

My family is a family of immigrants and I was born and raised here (although we did go back and I was raised for 6 years of that time in India too) and it is so incredibly infuriating and aggravating to how spoiled so many people here behave. They act like they live on the worst country on Earth when they literally live in one of the BEST places on Earth. People all over the world *dream* of setting foot into this country one day and many literally LOSE THEIR LIVES trying to do so. Americans generally have absolutely no sense to how damn good they’ve got it and I think it really pisses a lot of immigrants off lol it seems like immigrants often love America more than Americans themselves 😂

What we call a prison would be a luxury vacation for most NK people and probably would not want to leave. 3 meals a day running water a bed a toilet and electricity . It is kind of funny looking at it from our perspective, but that part literally made me cry because it made me understand just how insane it is in NK.. i can't even imagine the amount of suffering that would make me want to pass a kill on sight zone just to watch a movie... i hope that one day they can all be free and see what life really is

Thank you for this. I live in Canada. My parents are immigrants. Mom came at the end of WWII from East Germany with her parents and sister. Having food was a big deal. Dad cam from Austria, grew up on a farm on a mountain. Even a haircut at a barber was foreign.
