Love the Harriers. When we were stationed at RAF Wittering dad picked me up from school and we came through the airfield back way if I remember and we had to stop as we saw a Harrier take off vertically. Absolutely amazing never been so close as that. X

Sorry to be controversial , but the TSR 2 was perhaps the best aircraft of its era never to get past flight trials , along with the Canadian AVRO arrow.Any thoughts?

The Harrier - one of my top favourites - can even fly backwards and sideways. But it strikes me that I have never seen the F-35B do that in a flying display at an airshow. It 'just' can hang still in the air and can turn around. But can it fly backwards and sideways?? The Harrier has 4 jet exhaust pipes that can be turned to the front a little bit, but the F-35B has different jet engine exhausts.

Does it need to fly backwards? It's all aspect stealth, and supersonic performance is a tad more important. And for your info, the F35B can fly backwards, and this isn't a full display, just a short demo for Yeovilton and RIAT next weekend.

yes it can, I've seen them fly sideways onto carriers. I'm sure it can go backwards too.

But I was just wondering if the F-35B can also fly backwards and sideways, because a Harrier always demonstrates that during a flying display at airshows, but I've not yet seen an F-35B do that during a flying display. You asked: "Is it necessary to be able to fly backwards?" Maybe not. An advantage of being able to fly backwards I can think of is if an F-35B wants to land on an aircraft carrier, f.i. HMS Queen Elizabeth, and has flown a bit too far, then it can fly backwards a little bit to land on the correct spot on the aircraft carrier. Many thanks for your answer!

Harrier top of the list, not a fan of the f-35 at all, those cabinet doors could fail anytime, ugly plane
