And you and i is a masterpiece from English rock band Yes.This was a very enjoyable reaction to make for me.The progressive rock band outdid themselves on this one.
During my reaction,i kept thinking,surely this can't all be in one song?I'm still trying to figure out the meaning though from the lyrics.
Its incredible the amount of changes the song went through.
This is a Yes classic.

Yes' music was written by the entire band, not by any one person, so each member was able to focus his considerable skill and creativity into each and every piece. That's one of the things that makes Yes unique.

YES were heavenly geniuses from their beginning and flew leaps and bounds from there after! This entire album simply blew the roof off every other amazing Prog album in it's day. The other and Title track will blow your mind! I became musically & sonically reborn at 16 after hearing and seeing them Live in 72. Simply unimaginatively brilliant music that is timeless & unmatched though they actually continued to out do themselves with their next two albums. The depth to which they moved you was incredible & far beyond what you'd expect from any musicians

To best describe Chris Squire and Yes the greatest show on earth, one has to think of a meal. First we start with the appetizer, which has the taste of the main course, then comes the meal that consists of, say three parts- meat potatoes and your favorite green. You take that meal and crush it with a Grand Mary on vanilla ice cream and praise the Lord he has risen. On to the next Yes journey.

The story behind Close to the Edge should include the mastery of the producer Eddy Offord. The band had put down on tape several pieces/fragments of music that Eddie helped string together (back when all was done on tape) to form much of what we hear on the album. It was a very exhausting endeavour for the band resulting with drummer Bill Bruford electing to leave the band rather that go out and tour after this. I saw this tour (among many Yes tours) in San Francisco. New drummer Alan White (incredible resume and recently deceased) jumped in on the kit and began his long and illustrious career with the band. Imagine only a couple of practice sessions with this music before going out and playing live. Producer Offord also toured with the band at that time. What you hear on the album is what you got to hear in thr arena. The sound quality was in-CREDIBLE. Thank you for taking this one on.
@Yesquire0

Yes would play music over the arena sound system while the crowd filed in to fill the seats. Most frequently, just before the band hit the stage, you could hear the slow build-up to the finale of Stravinsky's "Firebird", and that was your clue that the concert was about to begin. Your musings about the length of "And You And I" were interesting to hear, because they echoed those of a lot of people back in the day when progressive bands where composing songs the length of which was limited not by their imagination or composing skills, but by the number of grooves in a standard vinyl LP album. You reflect the inertia of a listening public whose ears had been trained to accept the much more standard radio-single sort of song of about 2 to 3 minutes in length which allowed for lots of commercials in between songs. The early '70's was a time when a new type of radio, FM, was growing in popularity. In an effort to be different, the FM disc jockeys deliberately played deeper cuts from albums rather than hit singles, and they were happy to play the longer ones. It gave them time for a piss break, or coffee break, or to boink a cute intern. Not only did the artists abandon the time limitations for songs, but also ignored the barriers that had previously existed between musical genres. Thus folk-rock, country-rock, jazz-rock, and other conglomerations of musical styles also hit the airwaves. Yes is best described as symphonic progressive rock. They loved the longer form for songs, because, like a mini-symphony, they could use all sorts of changes in keys, rhythms, melodies, counter-melodies, and all sorts of other composing tools to produce a work of art rather than a catchy little radio ditty which could readily be bookended with commercials. They paid homage to Stravinsky because his compositions were radical for the classical music world, using dissonance and lots of sudden changes in melody, tone, and texture. The long-form song allows, for example, for the creation of different emotional triggers within a song. One minute, you sense trouble, fear, and foreboding. It's uncomfortable, and you want that feeling to end. When you get to that point, the song changes, and gives up tenderness, beauty, and hope. Here we are, almost 50 years later, and Yes is being revered by a new generation of music lovers like yourself who have never heard anything like them. While it is highly unlikely that the studio versions of their songs where recorded continuously in one take, there is no doubt whatsoever that the band could play them live. They did so, astoundingly, for decades in arenas all over the world.
@greenbluemonkey
@greenbluemonkey 3 жыл бұрын
Lets face it, it was money and greed that slowly squeezed shut the tap on progressive rock music. First AM, then FM, both were bought up by larger and larger corps who only looked at the bottom line. For upcoming bands, Radio was the only avenue to success or publicity for bands back then. And before long it was the shorter, catchier the songs that had a market, because there was more room for commercials. Under 3 min. a song was the goal. Add to that the collusion between the music industry and the radio industry. Many artists were fine with that limitation, but for others, there was FM at least. Dark Side of the Moon was played in its entirety after it came out, many times on FM stations. Other great artists like Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, you could hear regularly. Artists felt there was a venue that the public could hear their music. After FM was bought up and commercialized as well, it was only the leftover bigger names from the heady days of the early 70's creative rock revolution that could survive doing what they wanted after that shift in the industry. Even bands like Yes and Genesis leaned more commercial to retain sales into the 80's. There was no incentive, and there still isn't, for new bands to spend hours and hours creating such magical complex music if its only going to be heard on SoundCloud.

It seems that "watch me react to demographically marketed Corporate-Pop" is a bit like painting cherries on a red wall. I like a richer tapestry. It seems that Reacting to Yes is more universally appealing, both to old time original fans, and first-timers. Its touching to us original fans to have our artistic values find resonance and affirmation for a now powerful and influential legacy across generations. If Prog has achieved the credibility of Jazz, Blues, Folk and Rock, it's because it reaches out to absorb them all. Heck, many of them reached out to absorb Commercial Pop as well, and didn't do too badly. But it's more than just fusion, it must be a demonstration of originality. It demands the performer to never be coasting, but always delivering elite level skill. The balance is not always achieved all at once at one time in one piece, but the track of this reaction vid - AYAI is one of them. That is natural since its musical function and effect is enhanced by being the middle transition piece between side 1 Close to the Edge and the grand finale Siberian Khatru. AYAI is a tranquil respite from the mind breaking vastness of the first piece (which itself has the tranquility sandwich structure, thereby the album as a whole mirrors the shape of the title track). It also sets up a contrast with the final track - acoustic guitar fading away then a gritty electric guitar intro that feels like wrestling a snake into a bag. Then galloping away on a 8 measure riff that jumps from down beat to upbeat, and cycles on with just a few breaks for glorious spectacles of musicianship. All this exuberant determined energy has a far more profound impact in its relationship to the rest of the album than as individual tracks being plucked out of context. Obviously many albums by many bands don't rely on this track order level of musical appreciation. But Close to the Edge, and many Yes albums gain so much more from viewing them as a whole. (PS Modern digital music consumption, though still viably supporting the 'album' structure, has been heavily skewed in the direction of single tracks. Playlists of random tracks are the dominant mode of experiencing music. When I bought a fresh new Yes release I would close the curtains, headphones on, recline, and absorb side 1, Then get up to flip over the album. AYAI would start before I settled back, - with its casual studio chat and dreamy pinging improvised harmonics, like a welcome back from the Intermission, as i reclined and floated through the next two chapters of this mind movie. The point is, how we absorb the experience changes for each tech format. The album is a compositional three piece suite, designed within the limits of vinyl, then the dominant format. CDs changed the compositional variables in a way tapes never did, resulting in the spawning of the "bonus track" plague, and further diluting the experience of completeness and integral unity, nothing extraneous. These were some of the artistic goals of the early prog legends. They took up from the Beatles the idea (proto- Concept albums, - Sgt Pepper and Abbey Rd should not be heard as random tracks, - what good is a Reprise if you haven't heard its original? ) that a couple short hits and a bunch of filler material was NOT what they were about.

The craziest thing is this got a lot of radio airplay back then. I miss AOR (Album Oriented Rick) radio stations, and bands who viewed albums as an entire artistic expression and not just a collection of pop songs. AOR stations played tracks from albums regardless of length. This one, Bohemian Rhapsody, Echos by Pink Floyd, Dazed and Confused by Zeppelin, 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson, etc. All those tracks are long.

If you haven't done the album title song, you must experience that one. Very deep Yes it is! And it's even longer, took up one whole side of the LP!! Later, I suggest visiting their first, big and seminal album 'The Yes Album' (1971) start with its first tune, "Yours Is No Disgrace". Then continue thru each song in order since most of Yes's albums are concept ones with many song blendings. That way you can experience them as they intended. 'Fragile' is another excellent Yes concept album that came after and well worth covering! And with 'Fragile' you'll get to hear the original incredible studio version of "Roundabout" to compare with the live version you did a few months ago. Yes do more Yes! LOL! You know, one other thing that stands out about this band Harri is its very positive name, "Yes". ✌️😎

Before there was progressive rock or music in that genre, there was Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, I would even add the Moody Blues, who gave us great music and tunes way ahead of their time. In ways, still ahead of their time. Yes was at the forefront of this progressive sound, and my friends and I could not get enough of Closer to the Edge. God, but the 70s ruled music. We also have to give credit to Eddy Offord for putting it all together with Yes.

You might listen to some of their earlier albums, such as Yes Songs, to understand how they progressed!

This is just a short list of suggestions. Short because there are so many more, and at least one album is missing entirely. Yes started in 1969, but this begins with Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman joining in 1971. X=You already heard it. Early Yes Period (EYP 1971-1973) X 1)Roundabout (guaranteed hook) 2)I've Seen All Good People 3)Starship Trooper 4)Yours Is No Disgrace 5)Perpetual Change 6)Heart of the Sunrise 7)Siberian Khatru (Yessongs version is live and is best) X 8)And You And I 9)Close to the Edge Middle Yes Period (MYP 1974-1980) 1)Gates of Delirium 2)Turn of the Century 3)Going for the One X 4)Wondrous Stories 5)Don't Kill the Whale 6)Tempus Fugit 7)Machine Messiah Late Yes Period (LYP 1983-2001) 1)Hold On 2)Our Song 3)Hearts X 4)Owner of a Lonely Heart 5)That That Is 6)Mind Drive 7)Homeworld 8)Dreamtime

Really lovely reaction! The whole album was played on San Francisco FM stations. I saw them do this live when the album came out and it was even better. And I have a request: can you please take us back a couple seconds after you’ve paused it to react?❤️

I had nearly forgotten how good these guys are. This was really nice. For some reason, this reminded me of ELO. I have no idea why. They’re not really similar at all. But some more ELO is always welcome. 😂

Nice Harri, good reaction. 😊 Time for 'Close to The Edge'. The Steven Wilson remastered version is best. Just so you know, even in their seventies they play 3 hour sets and hit every song note for note. Rush, Tool and Dream Theater all cite Yes as a major influence. 😊

@kevin mcconnell Do you know if the SW remaster uses autotune specifically or is that a generalisation? Many fans think it's a great remaster not just me.

“Sounds like a medley”… Not your standard pop formula! No 4/4, no A/A/B/A/ verse structure. So it really challenges the uninitiated. Yet, it all ties together cohesively. I’m sure it does need a second or third listen before it really sinks in, which I hope you can give it. I hope you agree this is not the cold musicality of some prog-rock or jazz fusion, but rather, manages to be warm, inviting, uplifting and full of positive emotion. Yes is not for everyone, but for those who have an ear for it… May I second the recommendation for “Siberian Khatru.” It’s the song that immediately follows this one on the original album, and it is entirely different in every way (other than length) - it’s equally masterful and shows just how far these guys can stretch. This band it like no other.

I grew up with Yes along with so many other amazing bands. I enjoyed reading your comment. You're obviously a Yes fan. I am as well, maybe not as deeply as you, but a fan nonetheless. Your description of the band is beautiful. It seems as though this particular song has always been in my life as I've lived the years.

The reason it sounds like 4 parts is because it is 4 parts. On the original record each part was given a name: (I) Cord of Life, (II) Eclipse, (III) The Preacher, the Teacher and (IV) The Apocalypse. A short trip to Wikipedia will reveal such things.

You know, when I think back at the best "sounding" concerts I have attended, and there is a lot since 1973, 1008 shows to be exact, they all seem too be in the same "genre". That "progressive rock" genre. Pink Floyd, Kansas, Electric Light Orchestra, Supertramp, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Marillion, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Moody Blues, King Crimson, Queen, Rush and of course, YES. I guess that genre is where the talent lies when producing "the goods" in a live setting.

It ain't that complex, bro! Variations on a set of lyrics, harmonic and melodic material played fast and slow, and a change of key. It's not no rules...it's full of "rules". That's the magic!
