December is a busy month in any pottery studio and my studio has been extra busy this year with balancing filming classes for tv.clayshare.com along with making pottery for my Holiday sale. This year I made a bunch of ornaments for our family tree and this kiln is full of them. What I love about making my own ornaments (besides the fact that they are handmade and I made them) is that you can use them to test out textures along with underglazes and glazes. Many of these ornaments just have Speedball underglaze on them then a clear glaze on top! So simple to do and a great way for kids to decorate ceramic ornaments, you will just have to apply a clear glaze on top! I recommend a since free clear glaze because zinc can react with the underglazes.
These ornament will be fired one last time with Mother of Pearl luster and I will share that kiln opening here when it happens.
I love kiln openings and I share all of my glaze combos and how I apply them, really they are one of the best ways to learn about glazes .I always keep a notebook that way I can remember what glazes I used so I can repeat them again or if I am not happy with them so I can figure out how to make them better.
Something I want you all to remember is that there are no failures just learning opportunities to improve upon next time!
