I LOVE tools. This was a great “ride or die” overview of basic tools. I use the rounded end of the wooden throwing stick for burnishing. It works great for that. Thanks for sharing.

It's great to know that very experienced potters use the same tools that a relative newbie uses. Loved the video

I have all the tools you showed and a few you didn’t in my ride or die- a very tiny loop tool and three with various sized ball shapes on the end that I use for carving. Nice video!

Thanks for sharing! I use all the tools you use, except the smaller diameter hole tool. I'll have to look for one! I love the van Guilder one for berry bowls...but you do have to watch carefully to keep the holes the same width. Look forward to seeing your other videos!

Like all of your videos, this one was great!!! I used to use wood ribs but now the Mud Tools yellow, green and red are my "Ride or Die" throwing ribs. Like you, I have over 250 clay tools but my "fall backs" number maybe ten. And P.S. I still love you!!!

You know it's really easy to make ribs! I threw a piece of acrylic on my lathe turn it into a circle puts a bevel profile on it and then cut it into any shape that I want. Once the shape is cut I put the bevel on the remaining side it's so easy. You could make a rib with just hand tools however. In less than an hour you could have any rib design including the one you have there. Just sketch it onto a board cut it out even if you have to make multiple cuts and it's uneven. Sanded into shape and you're done. I would put tung oil on it.

Or the plastic of an ice cream box lid, or yogurt lid. Just cut it in the shape of a rib and smooth it with sanding paper.

Hi. If you want the same diameter hole each time. Wrap masking tape or duct / gaffer tape at the exact diameter you need. Then make your hole till you reach the tape. I use this method for drill bits and getting uniform depths. Cheers, hope this helps. :)

If you have a local woodworker to whom you can give your much loved rib I bet they can make that profile for you. I am starting to make my own tools and it can be challenging to get angles right and find the appropriate wood to work with. I am sure you will be able to have one made.

I am a beginner. I have taken one clay pottery class, to make a quilted tile. I want to know what kind of wood ect is good to make a table/board to work your clay on at home. I bought sheet rock, and taped all of the edges but that scares me, as if I am cutting slabs of clay, what if I cut through the paper, and get the dust in my clay. The next thing I am trying is I bought a thick piece of plywood, and 100%cotton duck cloth to cover it in... will that work? I also bought a round nicely finished board... Are certain types of wood bad to work your clay on? Thank you... I love your videos

Thank you! This is really perfect as I am about to make the journey to my local (but not close) pottery supply store. One question though- what do you use to cut the foot piece on a slab piece? It looks pretty square but cannot quite figure it out.

You should have my problem. Not only am I a Potter but I'm also a metal worker! So everytime I think I need a tool I go out into my shop and I make it! I've made so many tools it's not funny. And then of course you can't just have one of every tool that would be stupid right? So I have to make a half a dozen of them so that no matter what I can scan my little area and find one and grab it when I need it. A couple years ago before I started clay I built a giant ball Mill because I was doing organic chemistry at the time and sometimes it's necessary to get ultra fine ingredients for projects. The best thing that I made Believe It or Not was a simple heavy heavy heavy two and a half inch stainless steel rolling pin. You would think what how could one rolling pin be better than another? Oh my God it's so much better than anything else that I've ever used. I have so many tools now I can't find any

so when will you start selling your tools mmmmm were all thinking
@ClownWhisper
@ClownWhisper 5 жыл бұрын
@@donivers9454 well that's a problem because you can buy the same kind of stuff for the most part that I make out of acrylics and whatnot that are sold everywhere out of wood so I'd have to charge five times the price if I were to sell them you know what I mean? I mean there are some tools that are kind of unique in the end of a tube but the next guy may not think so. If I come up with some real good I'll throw it up on eBay probably. The best thing that I have come up with all different size completely circular wide smooth ribs made out of acrylic. There's so good for Smoothie the inside of bowls! I've got them from to in all the way up to 8 in

Send me a couple of pictures of that rib or place the tool on a scanner and scan it and I'll make one for you from wood and one from plastic. It would be helpful if it were next to a ruler for scale. Thank Wade

if you are filming on an iPhone get imovie on the AppStore for easy editing. Then upload how you usually do, but it's important you store the videos you edit on your computer or a separate hard drive. if you don't you will run out of memory on your iPhone fast, don't go for more icloud storage because unless you edit your videos immediately they will be automatically stored and moved to iCloud if your memory is full. then they need to be moved back to your phone, it's very annoying. hopes this helps Jess!!!

Thanks! I do film on my iPhone and then store them to my computer. I haven't done any editing yet... I am always so busy that I just want to get the video up and not take extra time with editing. That being said I do feel like I need to learn about editing so I can make more professional videos in the future! :)
