In this video I demonstrate how what appears to be a complex fault to find turns out to be quite simple if you just remember the golden rule of electronics. it also demonstrates how important a workshop service manual is , and without the service manual this set would have been scrapped.

Brilliant bit of deduction there! If that had been me, I almost certainly would have said, "At 1.1v (almost), that's close enough. The fault must be elsewhere". This just shows how modern electronics run to such close tolerances! If it had been a 1957 Murphy, 20volts low on HT, it would have been perfectly fine! It's a pity you're so far away - You could have had a look at my 2012 Samsung Series Five which gave up on me last week!⚡🤦💨

@@paulc9139 yep, solid state circuitry can be very picky of voltages, especially lower you go, i had a lot of troubles with a 1970s bush t22a chassis tv, couldnt get the colour decoder to work correctly, it turned out the 12v was slightly off, small adjustment and it then worked perfectly, its possible a component could have gone bad and touchy, but voltage adjustment seemed to fix it ok

valve stuff very 'unpicky' , even running a radio designed for 200ish ht volts on 100 ish usually works no problem , tried it , except slight loss in gain and max audio power output (as long as heater voltages are kept correct) unfortunately doesnt work as well with tvs 😉 , as for resistors, many obsess too much about replacing out of tolerance resistors, in many cases doesnt make jot of difference, except if its a potential divider for bias or screen voltage

Interesting to note that just that small discrepancy in voltage is enough to create the fault. I don't have enough experience to know that was the fault, but thanks to you I know now.

Sir, I like your channel but it should be stated that Kapton tape is not a heat shield in any way. So if removing a component with hot air near those types of capacitors, they should be shielded with some foil or aluminum tape above a layer of Kapton. It seems to have been ok here but those caps can easily explode with too much heat (it often happens during GPU repair in similar instances). I'm sure I'm not sharing anything you don't already know but viewers should know to use more than Kapton tape over sensitive areas. Keep making good videos, sir!

If you have a vaccum fluorescent display it is very common for the capacitors that generate the - 30 volt and fillement supply to dry out with heat and age causing the display to go dim, unfortunately if left in this condition for too long the VFD can go low emission and be damaged beyond repair, so replacing the caps on these two rails is an essential starting place.
