This is the kind of hype a 400 FPS compound will get! However you have to think at some point, there will be a speed that is fast enough where you won’t have to worry about a deer ducking the string at any ethical distance.

Hey there, I found you on my TV and you were comparing crossbows as to what you liked and didn't. I have shot an old Jackal by Barnett. It shoots at 314FPS and I am dead on out to 40 yds. I shot a great buck at 47yrds and he jumped the string and I hit him in the shoulder, the bolt bounced off and I lost a great buck. So it was time to up grade, unlike yourself. I did not want a high priced over inflated big name bow. I did settle on the Bruin Ambush 410+ .... WOW this thing is amazing, and I was wondering why you did not test this crossbow. The thing that really sold me is that the bolt is in-cased within the crossbow instead of sticking way out and having it catch on things. Just wanted to say Hi from Northern Minnesota. Stay alive, stay safe and always ...STAYTOUGH (would like to hear back on your thoughts)

When you discuss your evolution as a crossbow hunter, it occurs to me that my first crossbow was a Carbon Express, Intercept Supercoil. I really liked the bow. It was accurate and 360 fps. It did everything I asked of it. When I first purchased it, It wasn't the cheapest bow, but it was not a top tier crossbow of over $1000 plus dollars. I felt pretty smart thinking that I didn't have to pay the big bucks and could get just as much success. I harvested deer with that bow and I have good memories of that crossbow in general. As time passed, somehow I became interested in looking into a Ravin. When I got my hands on one, I was hooked soon after. I love my R10 and ate some serious crow after all my junk talk that everybody is loosing their minds paying so much for crossbows. There is a serious irony that now I have plans to get an R500! Lol! I will always keep my R10 and my son can use it also, but I sure was full of bologna! 😆 Guess we all must live and learn...

Excellent video. Shows just how personal equipment selection and the hunting experience really is. For me, the common denominator for success is close shots. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm shooting traditional, compound, or crossbow. I'm a better than average shot, but unlike a target, deer move. Unfortunately, I've been burned one too many times trying to stretch out my hunting distances. Some guys have good success at longer ranges, and that's fine. Doesn't work for me but that absolutely does not mean it won't work for you. Looking forward to you whackin' and stackin' with Bungie III this year!

The reason that he saw no difference (the kid) between 20 and 40 yards (or whatever he was yammering on about) was that he was using a sound switch which released the balloon at the sound of the bow. The sound of the bow isnt alerting anything at 40 yards. Get their attention? sure/maybe. His test (at that range was skewed due to the belief that the deer only react to the bow. Fred Bear spoke to the arrow as did Howard hill back before most bowhunters were born today. They all saw the arrow effect. This kid didnt allow for that and therefore... Everything he did past 26 was skewed to the negative. Barry and Gene Wensel have spent a good part of their life speaking to what this kid )and most) are just now starting to become aware of. Darn shame that the trad world and the modern archery world parted ways because the old wisdom has to be re=learned all over again at the expense of the newcomers. :( JMO... JME

It is interesting that your beliefs have evolved and prompted by your experience with a more modern crossbow. We form our ideas based on the experiences we have but also the data that is available. Your initial position was not completely wrong. There are many firearm hunters that believe they need a magnum cartridge to hunt with. Some of them think that the power of a magnum will make up for poor shooting skills. In fact, the opposite is true. An applicable story is The guy that dumps a ton of money on a five day guided elk hunt. He takes time off work and away from his family, only to arrive and be stuck due to weather for the first 3 days. On day 4 he makes it out hunting, but no elk are around. On the last day he gets one opportunity on a good bull. The bull is at 375-400 yards out slowly making its way up the finger of the canyon. The bull is traveling away and the only shot is a rump shot. With the ole 30-06, your out of luck! With the .300 magnum, if you can place your shot, this cartridge fires out with significantly more authority to drive into the vitals and make a clean kill. .in this instance, it could be the difference between going home empty handed, or bringing home that great trophy. We can indirectly apply some of these concepts with crossbows. None of this is a panacea for poor marksmanship. If you can’t shoot accurately, it doesn’t matter how fast your bow drives the arrow.

Why the 🦌 deer are blessed with that instantaneous instinct to react so quickly… Know what is the min KE that is available for the kill and adjust your equipment accordingly,, Build your arrow accordingly ie are you in a tree or a still hunter. You’ll be shooting lighter faster arrows.. If your in a blind up to 30 yards go with heavier FOC ..Better penetration,, higher KE. Lastly ..My opinion only.. The broadhead.. You speak to your 20 yard buck and here is what I am saying (and many old time bowhunters are saying) when we say close is better. If you are having deer moving the point of aim at 20 then you have to first stop that with either speed or simply getting closer. Speed is better. That said... before extending range, you have to beat what is already besting you. When you can eliminate that crouch, only then can you effectively extend range and then only to the degree that you have gained. 50fps equals 3 yards. Thats just the way it is. Step well out of the noise range (25 yards) and you can argue against bow noise BUT... as was seen in the 40 yard shot (and all over youtube) an icoming arrow makes a lot of noise. When you have noise addressing you, then we have to start all over again. 12 yards for noise from the bow or the arrow is confirmed. at what point does the speed aid most? Is it down range or close? Nobody has answered that question yet. There is a task for those willing to wound. Not worth it to me.

You still hit that deer high with the faster crossbow. The entry looked like you were shooting out of a tree stand. Thats maybe the highest kill shot I have ever seen and I wouldn't bet on that outcome over and over. You took a bow spec'd at 50fps over bunjie and added 10 yards to your limit (with bunjie) and got the same outcome. Doegirl and I watched that video maybe a dozen times, holding markers on the screen and that Doe ducked solidly starting at about 12 yards from impact. She either saw the arrow coming (she was looking at you) or heard it. Whatever the case, the speed meant nothing when distance was increased. same results. Had you been at 30, likely the hit would have been technically better. Just an FYI. I know you mull these things over and are a very moral guy in the field. So I say all this with the hopes that you will sit back, investigate what I say here and moved forward. Just not 10 yards forward. LOL Get a 480 and fine.... 10 yards. Wanna trade out?
@Deathbybunjie3 жыл бұрын
there's no way to tell from that doe video where or when that deer ducked...it was about 3 mins before end of legal shooting light, and filmed with a non zoomable f1.8 lens at 50mm. the deer is smaller than the lumenock in that video and the footage is blurry. I was aiming mid lungs and the shot appears to be 3 inches higher than that--totally consistent with her jumping the string, but you can't tell one way or another by the video. for all we know, i shot high. but i was 100% comfortable with that shot then, and remain so today. Alert deer looking at me? Not so much. ;)

Its my belief that aiming for the heart would do more to end high hits than anything else. Providing distance is kept within reason. Also, the heart gives the shooter a very small target, which feeds into the aim small miss small theory
