Time to answer one of those questions that keep popping up. That is, if I use any frame protection for frame bags. And how I apply it.
Also a bit of a bonus POV clip at the end for those curious about some sweet Japanese mountain roads.

Matte frame rider here: I use some clear sink/stovetop “caulk” tape from my local Daiso. Roughly $2 for enough to last many many trips. It it thicker so doesn’t look great, but it does the job well and peels off easy. 1,500~KM on my new gravel bike.. bumping and bashing around with a frame bag on all the time. Tape looks good, hasn’t worn through, and is cheap to replace as often as you want.

No matter how rough/smooth the bag/straps are it will either scratch or polish the surface. The material (even the dust going in between) is not your enemy, it is the movement. Don't believe any bag manufacturer's claim. There are only three solutions: 1) cover the frame so movement happens on a sacrificial surface 2) get a brushed titanium frame 3) don't care

I have been using black self fusing tape for three years now on my black matt frame. It has no glue, it sticks to itself, lots of "meat" to wear out, seconds to remove it. Just wrap it around where the loops of bags touch. I only use bags when I am bike packing, so I remove them when I don't need them.

Thanks for posting and, as always, the finest production quality I have found!

I went to my local tint/audio car place and picked up some automotive paint protection film for free. Then headed over to Harbor Freight and picked up some "putty spreaders" for around $4 USD. I used the putty spreaders as a squeegee. I used the paper that came with some shimano component to cut templates, then transferred that to the protection film. Cleaned frame with isopropyl alcohol and applied film with soapy water spray. It's working well and my frame is a matte finish. I applied it to the underside of the downtube and wrapped both chainstays.

This type of tape, or even thicker varieties, are slightly porous and will leak air. So if you apply a piece of tape anywhere even without water, if the bubbles are not excessively big, they will disappear in a couple of days as the air leaks out. This is of course irrelevant in your case as you anyway remove the tape after every ride, but may be useful for someone who doesn't have the time to do it that often. Also, a normal hair dryer (not a hot air gun which could possibly damage something) usually softens the tape enough to make it stretchy and conform to bends in the frame. Just my two tips.

I just got a new frame and forks, warranty. First ride to make sure all was good. Wash frame, polish key areas then apply 2 coats of ceramic coating to the whole bike. Then apply small patches of plastic protection to help the more prone areas, under crown of front forks, under the top of the rear stays, under bottom bracket, underside of down tube plus a few other little bits. I can see mine but don't mind too much as I know that it's going a good job.

Literally just finished wrapping m,y brand new domane yesterday. I put it on every corner of the bike, I rather have clear film than scratches. Btw, most expensive sports cars get a paint protection film to keep it from getting rock chips. Most just do the front bumper and headlights but some go as far as wrapping the entire hood and lower part of the doors. Lastly, you should give ceramic coatings a try, I ceramic coat all by cars/bikes and all I need to wash them is a hose.

I would definitely going for the long term application, as the risk of harming the paint with the scissors or knifes through the ever repeating process of application is increasing a lot. Better to have a slightly visible permatent protection (which you can renew if needed) as having a permanent scratched frame because of one moment not paying too much attention on these various repeatings throughout the year.

I have a matte black anodised aluminium frame, shiny protective tape is veeery obvious on it. I just use black insulating tape under each bag strap. Very easy to apply and to peal off. I would probably use the same method for a painted frame, since the tape anyway only covers the immediate area of the straps.
