Hi Elok Hsu, I just found this reaction and this is a good song but I was a keyboard player and my favorite is from 1971 called Roundabout. The keyboardist is Rick Wakeman and I wanted to emulate him as a teenager. You can also see them on the 2017 RocknRoll hall of fame

Hi Elok, I have been a lifelong Yes fan, discovered them since when I was around your age. Required listening if you want to get at the heart of this band: The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Relayer, and at least "Turn of the Century" and "Awaken" from Going for the One. I'd also highly recommend the solo albums Olias of Sunhillow (by Jon Anderson, the singer in this video) and Fish out of Water by Chris Squire (the bassist in this video). All these are top-shelf stuff. Yes is one special band with quite a history to them. How many major rock bands can say they have had musicians from the U.K., U.S.A., Switzerland, South Africa, Russia in their ranks? That they assimilated The Buggles (of "Video Killed the Radio Star"/MTV fame)? That Vangelis (the famed Greek composer and soundtrack artist) auditioned for them?

Great choice, Elok! Excellent title for this video, ha ha. It’s one of their more commercial songs but I’ve always liked it. Cool sounds within, it’s enough off to make it work for me. And I agree, the video is charming at this point. Good comments along those lines, Elok, about caring first about the music, rather than image or a super high video budget.

Ha ha! I love your take on the music video! 🤣 Back then, we thought this sort of thing was high art! Also, it wouldn’t be a proper early 1980s video without a scene with an exploding CRT TV. The poor band members: they all have the “Can I go now?” expression on their faces. This was quite a different approach for the group, as they sounded more like pop-rock with Trevor Rabin in the band, so some diehard Yes fans hate this era. I personally quite like it, as Rabin is a fantastic guitar player and there were some good songs on “90125”. That said, “Close to the Edge”, by the classic lineup, is the band’s magnus opus. Rock on! 🤘🏻
@kerryloc3 жыл бұрын
Addendum: I’ve been getting back into The Knack recently, so you might like checking out “My Sharona” or “Baby Talks Dirty” for some more old school music videos. (The latter song also has an exploding TV in the video!) The songs kick a$$ too! 🤘🏻

If you ever want to hear another song by Yes and you liked "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", why not listen to "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" from the album Tormato. The song could build a bridge between the prog rock of the 70s and the (prog) pop of the 80s.

The 'keyboards' began to get very popular in the 70s with Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd etc., and many of my friends had them in their apartment or garage. MTV made this song popular and played it a lot and other Yes songs. Their sound changed with this album and it took a while for the fans, like me, to get used to it. Yet it became their only #1 hit. I remember one of their music videos being played upside down for 24 hours straight on MTV in 1983 or 1984. Yes was ahead of their time IMO and one of my favorite groups. Thanks for reacting to them. "Owner of a lonely heart (Much better than a) Owner of a broken heart."

Wow, I've watched a huge number of reactions to Yes music and I have to say your reaction has to be my favourite. Love the humour alongside the knowledge and critical comments. Well done, even if this Yes song doesn't make my top 50 Yes songs. Huge recommendation for you to go right back to their early 70's catalogue and start with 'Roundabout'. It's a mistake to hear Yes music for the first time on video. Whilst Yes can produce their entire catalogue flawlessly live, much of the early footage is ruined in the production. By all means watch them, just hear the studio remastered versions first. 70's prog and especially Yes is like nothing else you will hear. 😊

That’s awesome how you always do your research on the songs and bands Elok, (with awesome humor!!!). I’ve learned somethings I never knew, that is saying something and thank you! In regards to the video, I’ve never seen this version (and most likely no other versions going forward cuz I had the Eagle at the end claw my eyes out...😮👀🦅😵😂 Another vid you’ll never unsee but good song is She’s gone by Hall and Oates, you’ll never see the 👿 the same way!) The original MTV version of this song is very much darker, the story, and lots of very crazy images involving a who’s who of animals you never want to pet🤢) The bizarre thing with this vid is there are a few scenes in this vid from the MTV original, the dude falling off the building, the Eagle, etc. I think Jon Anderson is actually just a 5 second GIF in this one! And as far as the message of the song, it is spot on! The owner of a lonely heart is much better than an owner of a broken heart, just words of advice, broken hearts are the worst!!🤧

Nice! Your first song by Yes and then of all things "Owner Of A Lonely Heart". This is their most successful song, but at the same time the one most hated by the fans. Yes became famous with Prog Rock (and got into the Hall of Fame for it). This song is 80s pop (with a bit of prog) and is not representative of the kind of music that fans love them for. I don't think the song is that bad, but it's not "really Yes" somehow. Three suggestions from me: "Shock To The System" (1991) from the album Union is a bit like "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" but with more Prog parts and two classics; "Roundabout" and "Heart Of The Sunrise" (1973) from the album Yessongs.
@avantprog69023 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true, real progsters view this as Yes selling out. Yes did some very avant garde things in their early albums.

Not all Yes fans hate it. I LOVE this song. I think it is far & away their best song. Fairlight samples, Gated reverb, and the use of the harmonizer on guitar solos makes the musicianship at top form.
@ThatsMrPencilneck2U3 жыл бұрын
Old Yes fans just don't get into the South African grove that came with Trevor Rabin. Yes was reaching it's zenith in musical complexity ten years before this song came out. Yes started on their downward trajectory with the release of Tormato, in 1979. A good introduction to their former glory would be "Roundabout," released in 1971.

Early Yes can be a bit dull between the insane highlights, but this is their way of meeting the forced (by recordcompanys) new era of being"radiofriendly", it's quite electronic very 80's sound, but i judge this album (90 125) as a fullblown masterpiece from start til end. songs like Changes, Hearta, hold on, it can happen...doh you gotta do Complete album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ony9l4WEpc-ie8U Other bands went same destiny was Blue Öyster Cult and album Fire Of Unknown Origin (think you'll love it). Full album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6qapmh3dpdkgLM Little taste: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYSulqJrdrhorK8 (Titlesong) and Jethro Tull - Roots To Branches Full album (Also titlesong): kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH-bh32mbayXpJY They are all perfected and it shows where these guys come from not letting a ugly "new order" kill their joy of play ♥

even if it is a cool song this is almost a bad example of YES music, that instead touched a well bigger moments of greatness in the seventies (and even later) I suggest you something much less "pop"of them ... like "A turn of the century" ... of if you want something rock (and not too long composition) maybe "Release, Release"?
