"Owner of a Lonely Heart" is a song by the British progressive rock band Yes. It was released as a single in October 1983 and became one of their most successful singles, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song was also a significant hit internationally, charting high in several countries.
"Owner of a Lonely Heart" was written by Yes members Trevor Rabin, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, and Trevor Horn. It marked a departure from the band's previous sound, incorporating elements of pop, new wave, and synth-rock.
The song was produced by Trevor Horn, who was known for his work with bands like The Buggles and later became a prominent producer in the music industry.
As mentioned, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" topped the charts in the United States, making it Yes' first and only number-one single. It also performed well in other countries, reaching the top ten in the UK and Canada, among others.
The song is characterized by its catchy guitar riff, synthesizer hooks, and energetic rhythm section. It features a blend of electronic and traditional rock elements, giving it a unique and modern sound for its time.
The music video for "Owner of a Lonely Heart" received heavy rotation on MTV, contributing to the song's success. It features surreal imagery and visual effects, reflecting the experimental nature of the song.
"Owner of a Lonely Heart" remains one of Yes' most recognizable songs and is often cited as a classic of 1980s rock music. It has been covered and sampled by various artists and continues to be a staple of classic rock radio playlists.
Overall, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" represents a significant moment in Yes' career, marking their successful transition to a more commercially oriented sound while still retaining their progressive rock roots.

Wow so I grew up in Lititz PA where Claire Bros formed who did and still does do sound and shows for musicians. Now called Claire Global. My brother worked for Clair Bros and when YES was at the water street studio he took me down there to meet some of them. I got to meet Allan White the drummer. My brother told me to let him kiss my hand because if I didn’t he would get on the floor and bite my ankles 😂 I saw Rick Wakemans keyboard set up. Back in the 70’s you could meet groups like this because there wasn’t a lot of security issues like there are today. I went to school with all the Clair Bros kids so we always knew who was in town at any given moment. Michael Jackson loved Lititz because it’s a small town and no one ever bothered him. Just a little history and now I feel old 🤔😆

This is my #1 favorite song of the 1980s. And the video is probably in my top 5...because it's just so WEIRD, lol. This was the re-forming of Yes, and some of their 1970s fans did not like the album (90125), but I thought they did an amazing job of bringing their specific brand of prog-rock creativity and merging it with (then) modern 80s soundscapes. I happen to think it is a killer album, and I don't care that it doesn't sound exactly like all of their 1970s output. It's nice when a band is not afraid to evolve.

Storm Thorgerson directed the video and is best known for closely working with groups such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, just to name a few; he directed their music videos and he even helped on many of the band's album artwork. The video was his work and he felt that the complexity of visual imagery matched the song's unconventional sound (although I would agree, today the video is distracting) also one must remember this is at the very beginning of the MTV era. Here's another one of their songs, if interested. "YES - Roundabout (Original 1971)" Enjoyed rocking with you, peace out~

A lot of the artists in the early eighties were not fans of making videos. It took some convincing by studios to get artists to make videos. Especially the artists that were around in the sixties and seventies. This one started out okay but of course they decided to take it to another place. This was probably because they were around in the seventies and wasn’t fans of the idea of videos. Plus this was a different style of music that was done on this album. The previous style was more progressive. Similar to early Genesis.

Check out the song that they put out in the late 1970s. When they for short period of time had a replacement singer. The name of the song is called Tempest Fugit. With producer bass player and vocalist Trevor Horn leading the group. And although Chris Squire was still on base in the group. This was a multi-talented musician to take over the vocals. It doesn't sound like you're typical Yes song. Great baseline in the song great groove in the song. Trevor Horn was them gentleman who sang lead on the Buggles song. Video killed the radio star. Worth checking out. Keep up the good work and take care !

YES! 😊 I have to agree with you...great song, terrible video! 😂 This band was killing it in the '70s, and the members kind of came & went. Trevor Rabin hooked up with Chris Squire, Alan White & Tony Kaye in the early 80's with the intention of forming a new band, but management thought it might be best to bring in Jon Anderson as lead singer and make a new YES album. It worked out ok for all involved! Some old school YES fans didn't like the change, but I think most came around eventually. The new band definitely had some good material and a fresh sound. Very iconic 80's music with a little bit of prog mixed in here & there. All of the members of YES were very talented and they have many fantastic songs. This could be a very deep rabbit hole to go down.😊
