Patrick's keyboard work on Relayer is some of the most brilliant playing on any Yes album. To me Relayer was where Yes peaked in terms of going all out on creativity.

Why in heavens would you disrespect Patrick!?! I was a young Los Angeles Californian guitarist,that was very blessed and lucky to join a Swiss progressive rock band called Flame Dream.Flame Dream recorded six albums on the Vertigo Record label;and mostly recorded at Patrick Moraz's Aquarius Studios in Geneva,Switzerland with his clever engineer Jean Ristori,Patrick's studio was a creative magnetic for recording signed European progressive rock bands.Patrick's nice father used to come to the studio and watch us record.Later on Jean Ristoroi would take us,Flame Dream to his amazing house in the alps,and give us a slide show of him on tour with Yes along with a fantastic dinner. Merci vielmals Mr.Moraz and God's blessings!!

Moraz is a great keyboard player, Wakeman is a great keyboard player, each in their own right, and each having a difference in training and style. Moraz helped keep the band alive after Wakeman left and did an admirable job on "Close to the Edge" having to perform the notes which Wakeman himself wrote, and having to learn it all by ear. Patrick is to be given credit for keeping the band alive during transitional years, while adding his own great talent and style to the playing and tours.

Patrick here didn´t destroy Close to the edge, he has only changed the feel. A band doesn´t have the obligation to play the song exactly as the recording in a concert. It depends on the fans will. The pipe organ was the best to use, because it gives a better climate in 2:43 than the tone with less reverb on the video. The notes played were loyal enough in the original pipe organ part.Close to the edge was a masterpiece, but I prefer Relayer or Going for the one personally.

Agreed. We used to cover "The Gates of Delerium" and it was always really tough for the keybardist.. But what a blast. Relayer really is my favorite album.. although I sure like early Yes too..

My favourite part is what here starts at 4:50. The studio version is amazing. But probably too dificult to play it live. Here, Moraz just 'throws in' this little 'jazzy' solo, but back then those guys had no idea that 30+ years later 'KZbin critics' will be analizing every song 'minute-by-minute'... Concerts were just a celebration of this great music.

Moraz is an amazing talent. Many here with some technical savvy point out the early synths having tuning issues. Also, please note that tape recordings (meaing taping of the show itself) also have flutter that affects the higher frequency stuff you're not going to notice it much on bass and guitar. My point is it probably didn't sound that as "sharp" at the show in person.

My first 4 YES concerts were: Dec 14, 1974 July 21-22, 1975 June 12, 1976... 3 seperate YES RELAYER tours. Patrick was fine in all of them. Great, great concerts!

I'm a keyboard player, and I've gotta say it....this isn't the end of the world. It seems like something was coming from a loop in the background during the "I get up I get down" thing that set EVERYBODY off, and there were two small tuning errors that I noticed....VERY far from "destroying" Close to the Edge. VERY. Patrick Moraz is awesome.

Moraz played at Loftus Road, Wakeman didnt he wanted out. I was at that concert and it sounded great, even with a few beers inside me. Its live, its for the moment and all about Morazs interpretation. I think he done well, because Wakemans boots and ego are tough to fill, and I went home happy.

As other musicians said below, it's extremely difficult for a musician, even the greatest, to identify tuning problems if the monitor system is not working. Other problems are not that difficult, and you can see how fast Patrick reacts and synchronizes the oscillators. Analog synths are not toys and it take guts to play them. Those who know them know that they can easily be out of tune. Even moisture can affect the sound.
@siskokidd17 жыл бұрын
When I heard this I laughed mightily. Big Moraz fan here (see my list of 90's era videos I shot with him), and a former working musician. Anyone who's stepped foot on stage knows that anything can and often does happen on any given night. Things go wrong technically and even good or great musicians have off nights. Lack of sleep will do it too. I've nearly fallen off the stage while playing after dozing off.
@kamakirinoko12 жыл бұрын
His Moog wasn't tuned when he started. He corrected it as fast as he could, but he had to play, not fiddle with the tuning knob. When a guitar string breaks, you can't stop the song and replace it. You just have to muddle through as best as you can. I think he did a fabulous job, and his organ solo at the end was outstanding. Blame the tech who didn't tune the Moog or the poor mix job for Patrick Moraz sounding bad. He did his job perfectly. The people around him didn't.
@Chudhole15 жыл бұрын
You have to give PM a break on this one. He's a fantastic musician who helped write on of their best albums. There's a reason they hardly play Gates or Soundchaser live anymore. That shit is tight.
@progrocker6912 жыл бұрын
The only thing wrong with the entire performance was where Patrick had to spend about 1.5 seconds getting that one Moog back in tune. In the heat of that performance I'm willing to bet that 95% of the audience didn't even detect anything wrong. Watching this video from the comfort of my computer chair even I barely noticed it, and I have a very good ear for pitch.

Wanna know what Patrick thinks of this clip? Not long ago he emailed me about it. He said: "I couldn't help but notice somebody is infering some really bad things about me with the "PM destroying Close to the Edge" video clip from 1975. That's really bad, and I'd like to know what to do to have that at least "minimized." After all, we had a terrible stage mix of us that night, also, the cold-damp weather was making all my instruments, specially the moogs and mellotrons, out-of-tune."
@zappatx16 жыл бұрын
Right at 4:50 Patrick is doing a awesome job! It more than makes up for the temperature change of the out of tune transistorized voltage regulated synth. Hammonds by the way DO Not go out of tune. Im humbled by the fact they point the camera at him for most the duration. Makes up for the lack of Tony Kaye film, bruford film and overabundunce of the "stay away from me you have cuddies Steve Howe".

Terrible weather that day, terrible sound problems for the band, documented in interviews in Jon Kirkman's recent coffee-table book on Yes. All in all not bad given what they were up against. Btw whoever said all Moraz does is play scales must not listen to Wakeman, whose playing is mostly grounded in pre-20th C classical cliches and blues licks and playing ascending and descending riffs *very fast*. Moraz is easily the more imaginative musician of the two, he has a ton more varied influences to draw on. And it would unimaginable for Wakeman to go out on an improvising tour with Bruford the way Moraz did.

@Thundergod1299 жыл бұрын
Yes Rick has had some classical training, but so what? It fits the Yes sound much like Steve's Mood For A Day which is more or less a classical piece. Don't get me wrong, I think Patrick is great but really? Rick's work just on piano is transcendent. Add the moog stuff and he's leaps and bounds better than Moraz. I guess I dig his flamboyant style as well. And his solo work is just outstanding. I saw them with Patrick promoting the Relayer Album and he was great playing his own material but playing stuff like Heart Of The Sunrise and of course Roundabout? It has to be Rick....

Rick Wakeman solo in "Close To The Edge" is one of the greatest Hammond solos in all of rock history, and its MELODIC construction and development is perfect. Really, one cannot "improve" it or make variations on it without destroying the whole thing.
@4Pints4Me15 жыл бұрын
I actually think this was very cool. It sounds to me like the synth solo was deliberately de-tuned. And his playing was great on all the keyboards. Personally I think that Patrick Moraz is a better keyboard player, and more importantly, a more innovative musician than Wakeman, and that would at least partially explain the deliberate de-tuning of a synth for that solo. It all sounds very good to me.

Hey, All - This is a fine solo. It's a little sloppy in two brief spots, but there was no random note playing going on here. This is how Moraz plays. And, as mentioned below, he's much jazzier than Wakeman or Yes in general, so he's playing this solo with a sense of optional chords in mind. He is the only Yes Keyboardist to stray from Wakeman's original solo, so it definitely stretches the listeners' ears.

My 2 cents on the Wakeman v Moraz debate already in progress - I like the new perspective that Moraz brought YES for the Relayer album, and I admire his focus on doing his own thing during the sections of Wakeman era songs where he had that freedom as a soloist, but in places where his role was that of carrying established melody, he really did murder some stuff. A horrible example is heard on 'And You And I' in this concert during the keyboard melody leading into: "Sad creature..." OOOH! Ouch!

There were a few minor issues, but none were Pat's (or Yes's) fault, and it's impressive how they steamrolled through. A lesser band would've fallen apart and been reduced to tears on stage. Trust me I've been there :/ 0:00 The sound mixer killed it. There's no bass to define the groove and no drums to define the beat, so it sounds soupy. But Howe & Moraz were spot on their parts. 2:43 Someone backstage triggered the prerecorded filler track (pipe organ) a beat too soon. So you hear it change a beat ahead of the band. Pat was the one who got them back in sync. 3:32 Analog voltage oscillators have a pesky quality of going out of tune with temp/humidity changes, but that's also what makes VCO's so distinctive and prized in the world today. That one was wayy out, I'll give you that. Again Pat recovers fast. Would you know which of those 50 knobs is controlling the 1 faulty oscillator? I would've run off the stage sucking my thumb. 4:52 Moraz rips it UP! Killer Hammond solo improv. Nuff said.

All I can say is that if another drummer were to miraculously appear today who plays with the same fire and dynamics that Alan White used to play with back then, well, the world would be a much better place. Nobody played like him nor ever will again. Jeez.

My friends and I saw "YES" in Dallas in 1974, for the "Relayer" tour, although "Relayer" wasn't out in the stores yet, so, it was totally new to us and with "Moraz" and they started out with "Sound Chaser" and, of course, played the entire album and more. Patrick Moraz plays the solo almost note for note as Rick Wakeman would have. Gosh - you guys keep complaining about Patrick. I think this is great. I especially like how the camera spends a great deal of time on him. But some of these synths do go out of tune with changes in temperature - the voltage regulated types. Also a Hammond never goes out of tune and that is the hilight here. He's really having fun. Kaye is still the best Hammond yes has ever had now you can see him play as CIRCA!

Please do not diss Patrick for the Minimoog being out of tune. I own an original Mini Model D and they are notorious for going out of tune. The original oscillators were thermally unstable. Lighten up, people!

Well what can I say, he definetly ( Patrick) changed the whole structure of the solo, quite different, perhaps he did not destroyed the whole song, but in order to play YES you have to be quite accurate on its compexity otherwise it wouldn't be YES, at least he applied some emotion to his effort, or at least that's waht it seems like in this video, but he definetly should've rehearsed a lot before going to the stage and play a masterpiece like this one ...

This is from the Queens Park Row video. The video is very poor, 1975 TV. Just doesn't cut it. And the audio mix is ATROCIOUS! The first song, "Sound Chaser", is unlistenable because of the poor quality of the mix. But, by the time they hit "Ritual", everything settles down and it's just awesome. They also do a GREAT, acoustic-only version of "Long Distance Runaround." Magic. The Moraz version of Yes is my fave - saw them for both tours, and the 1976 tour is the best... Crab Nebula set..

This is part of an indispensable show for any serious Yes fan. Getting hung up on the playing of Patrick Moraz during CTTE when so much of the early part of the audio mix is obviously all over the map is silly. And he's never going to give you a Wakeman style solo, so don't look for it. Steve Howe is on fire all night...just tears apart the first three minutes of CTTE. And I have no idea how anyone can get on Alan White - like Wakeman to Moraz, it's different styles altogether. Relax.

During that first bit, it sounded like Moraz hit a couple wrong notes on the Hammond. The organ during I Get Up I Get Down sounds different because Moraz is playing a Hammond, whereas on the record it's a pipe organ. In fact, on the Close To The Edge tour, they had the pipe organ on tape for that section. The Hammond solo doesn't bother me that much. Yeah, he's playing something different, but so what? It's not like Rabin practicing his speed picking exercises during Yours Is No Disgrace

Moraz is using an Analog synthesizer in this and unlike digital controlled instruments, they are living and breathing and need to be tuned. Ask any Analog Synth buff and they will tell you that some of those instruments are notoriously easy to detune. Case and point Moog Modular Synthesizer. His hammond playing is a bit dirty, even for my tastes and I like "dirty and crunchy". YES rocks!

Relayer was Yes' greatest album - with Moraz, not Wakeman. I would just love to know what GFTO or even Tormato would have sounded like had Moraz stayed in the band.
