What’s left to say about this classic of the genre? Much ink has been spilled trying to get to the essence of why it works so well, compositionally and structurally. Somehow the musicians and engineer / mid-wife Eddie Offord were all wide awake during it’s gestation and birth at Advision Studios in London that June in 1972. We were tuned in. So many small, tiny coincidences had brought we particular people to that studio at that time to make that record. You almost felt that the outcome was beyond one person’s - or indeed the group’s - control. For anyone interested I devoted some pages on the music’s creation, viewed from my perspective, in my 2009 autobiography, so I won’t cover that ground again here.
It took a while to make, though. There was a rumour flying about that Simon and Garfunkel had taken three months to make ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’, a huge slice of time in those days. Naturally, in an age of competitive excess, Yes tried hard to take a bit longer. We probably succeeded, but I’ve been unable to confirm that. Nobody was watching the clock on the expense of all this. The sessions were endless, starting midday and going as long as there was one man - usually Chris Squire - still standing.
During its construction, we had to go and play gigs in various parts of the UK to keep some money coming in. We’d break down the equipment in the studio on a Friday night, go and do a job or two over the weekend and come back Monday morning, having to set up all the gear and recreate the sound of all the instruments exactly as it had been the previous Friday. Particularly draining for the drummer who had a load of sound-checking to do.
I’d left the group by the time the album appeared in the fall of 1972. The first time I played it was with ABWH some 17 years later. Everything had changed: me, the drums, the bass player, two guitarists, two keyboard players, subtle differences in the performance versus the recording that I remembered. It was bound to be different from the original 17 years earlier, but it was a real buzz getting to grips with the beast. I remember loving listening to it as we were playing it. Could I remember it? You betcha. All in all, it was a big night for me.
As they say about drummers, I had the best seat in the house.

I saw the Close to the Edge tour in the early 70's. Was shocked to find out Bruford had left the band before the tour. However in every other regard they were better than this performance. Steve Howee's tone on a 335 is just not the same, obviously totally different bass without Squire plus miss his harmony vocals.

Looks like Steve is having a great time, especially during the opening segment, just jamming his way through like he would have done in the old days. I wonder if having access to more harmonic space from a more subdued bass and a clearer drums groove triggered this enthousiasm, but anyway that is what it looks and sounds like. Absolutely wonderful lesson in quality listening and live immediate reactions from the drum stool, enhancing the whole.

@dr.xtrada
@dr.xtrada 10 ай бұрын
@@randyblythe1547 Nope. @asharmstrong6730 is correct about this. Not sure what tour you think you saw but it wasn't Close To The Edge. Bruford famously quit the band with just weeks to spare before the tour, leaving Alan White to learn their whole repertoire at the 11th hour. White did not "tour behind Yessongs" -- he is *all over* Yessongs. Bruford only features on 2 tracks of the triple-LP Yessongs - Perpetual Change and Long Distance Runaround - which were recorded before he quit. Also everyone should listen to at least one or two of the shows featured in the 'Progeny' box set if they want to know just how much Alan White nailed it on that tour. Nobody plays like Bruford, and I used to really miss him on Yessongs but I actually think that had more to do with the muddy mix of that album. White was no slouch, just more of a rock drummer whereas Bruford brought the jazz and jazz-fusion colors to the palette.
@mawel1955
@mawel1955 9 ай бұрын
@@dr.xtrada You're absolutely right on that. Bruford bailed on the band just as they were getting ready to tour. I was talking with Mike Tiano about this and he said that Bill did offer to do the tour but warned that if he did, he wasn't going to be 'committed to the music', whatever that meant. Howe then told him that if he wasn't going to be 'committed' then he should just leave now - which he did. I have no idea what Bill meant by not being 'committed to the music'. Did it mean he was going to deliberately screw up or give an inferior performance? I don't know. And Howe was said to regret telling Bill not to do the tour. While Alan did a good job, the Yessongs tour just wasn't the same without Bill and I can still remember being very disappointed when I opened up my copy of the Yessongs album and saw Bruford had left the band and was only featured on three tracks. It really bothered me and still does (in a way).

I think many Yes fans (particularly Squire fans) were somewhat offended to learn he could learn all this so quickly, and Jeff was rather nonchalant about learning it so quickly. Saw the ABWH tour in Philly in '89. When CTTE came in, the crowd went ABSOLUTELY NUTS. This was one of the top 3 concerts I've seen. Really would have liked to have heard what this lineup could have produced musically, given the chance. My only musical regret is not having the opportunity to see the Wetton/Fripp/Cross/Muir/Bruford lineup of King Crimson.

It’s really great that we have all these different permutations of yes. Here, Bill and Rick, both get to elevate their contributions a bit. Rick brings new sounds and extra drama. Bill brings that rare quality of time so solid. It’s like it’s sculpted in the air. Buddy Rich had it too. The ability to put out time so solid they lifted the whole band up off the stage… Together. Because there is simply no other option with Time that powerful.

A few years ago, I brought my 25 ish year old son who is a musician to the Smith Center (of all places, in Las Vegas where I live) to see Yes with John and still with Chris alive. I told him you are going to hear the greatest voice in the rock and roll history of the United States. And so it was.

What a great remembrance. I knew that you left the band after its creation, but I did NOT know you had never performed it live. I was at Mud Island for opening night of the ABWH tour and remember it fondly. Was a GREAT show! The incredible piece it is, I can't begin to imagine the feeling of performing it live so many years after all the work had been done in its creation. Thanks so much for sharing.

Not the fastest guitarist in the world but in perfection & precision Steve Howe reigns supreme. He's truly an AMAZING GUITARIST.

Howe's creativity and phrasing always impressed me, as a guitarist. I have tried to label his style but I cannot. It borrows heavily from rock and classical yet sounds unique. It sounds like Steve Howe.

I remember the first I ever heard it. The side (it was on vinyl of course) finished and I just let the record spin as the tone arm reached the center label. I was frozen. Simply the best prog rock tune (and album) of all time.

Jeff Berlin was good but it's a shame they don't have the footage with Tony Levin. He was sick when this was filmed. I was lucky enough to see him. Even without Squire this tour was better than the Union tour. 8 musicians just cluttered up their sound so much!

I remember the first time I heard this song, my reaction was "I don't see what the big deal is." I could go on about how the song's effects sink into you over repeated listens, but for me the real takeaway is that part of its brilliance is its unassuming tone, the lack of grandeur in its structure, is what makes it more than another epic and brings it in line with its lyrical message of unity and simplicity.

Thanks for posting this, Mr. Bruford. I'm more partial to you KC stint with Adrian Belew, but your Yes work was foundational for me & my pre-teen pals in the early '70s.
