I had been a jazz and classical musician for 5 years when I saw them live at age 16. I'd played Vivaldi, Stan Kenton, Beethoven, and I treated the concert as I would seeing Bach or Stravinsky perform. Even anticipating the musicianship they would deliver to their audience that night, it was incomparable to any performance I have ever seen. I left the stadium in shock. I knew I had experienced something so incomprehensible, even to my trained ear, that I would never reach that level of musicianship in five lifetimes. Still in awe.

I've loved prog rock since I was 10 years old. Thats 51 years ago. My dad in the living room listening to Mozart. My sister listening to the Beatles, and my brothers listening to Yes, Floyd, Sabbath and such like. What choice did I have but to be a rock drummer for over 45 years. This stuff didn't just change my life, it was my life. Great reaction as usual Harri. You're a star in your own right. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

From 1971 album, "The Yes Album", this is a magical 3 part song. The wonderful changes in mood, rhythm, tempo and style and Howe's guitar solo featuring country elements and rockability kept this song on the charts for 34 weeks and sold 1 million copies. Howe's part was from when he was in a band called Bodast, but the label closed down, so the album never came out. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Uncle Phil. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

If you really want to get your mind blown again check out their in-studio performance of 'Yours Is No Disgrace' from 1971 on The Beat Club. It's unreal to see a band play a song like that (back then a new song) so well live. Another song with several parts and each guy in the band playing/singing ridiculously good. Then there's the live performance of 'Roundabout' from 1973 and... I could go on...

Hello Dear Harri -- I visit all reactions to prog rock for a project I'm working on. I visit you more often because your good cheer gives me a lift. My favorites get told two my wife. She knows you as the happiest man in England. ...So imagine you're 17 in 1978, in Madison Square Garden, watching Yes play in the round. The lights and sound mounted on a star shaped circle over the stage. I was about twenty feet from the stage. The first song was so loud I couldn't 't hear it. They ended with Starship Trooper -- after many joints passed around -- and the band was ripping -- and then the lights started coming down, the truss arms closing like a flower. For a moment I thought they were elevating the place. Keep listening. On a good day they can lift your house.

Great song, studio or live, those guys had the skills to take a most difficult prog rock catalog and bring it to life. Saw them several times in the 1970s, they were incredible. You should do Close to the Edge, that entire album is amazing, 3 epic songs, the title track took up one side of the LP while And You and I & Siberian Khatru took up side 2. Amazing music that is amongst the best in the last 60 years. They played 3 hour shows that literally took you away into their musical landscapes. Musical Savants, they produced the musical equivalent of magic mushrooms. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🎧

Interesting for you to mention them finishing a live show with this. I saw them in 1983 ish, when I was 20, and there were all these junior high schoolers there because the Yes they knew was 90125 and "Owner of a Lonely Heart". They played that, but overall, great show. The first encore is "Gimme Some Lovin'" (with Jon Anderson's voice ... wow!). Kid next to me asks "Is that a Yes song?" I said, "Nope, Spencer Davis Group, with Little Stevie Winwood." Might as well have spoken in Latin. They finished the show with Starship Troopers, and I turned back to him and said "Now THAT was a Yes song!"

Yes! Playing this last but extended was exactly what they use to do Live in the early days when I saw their first US Tour.

Harri, as others have said, currently this genre is called Progressive Rock, because the songs “progress” through different themes, yet still remain together. But also as others have said, back in the day it was called Classical (not Classic) Rock, because of the musicianship of the band members. Yes is my favorite band, but I firmly believe in introducing someone new to their music chronologically, starting with this, their third album and playing the tracks in chronological order as well. This album, called The Yes Album, opens with Yours Is No Disgrace, and is the perfect introduction to the band, especially Chris Squire on bass. Strong recommendation that you visit Yes in chronological order.

I appreciate your reaction a lot, this prog rock is not your daily dosis of music, I assume. I first heard it when a friend took me to a small neighbourhood theater showing the Yessongs movie around 1976. Sound was not great, but music impressive, and I have been a fan of Yes ever since. When I visited a Yes concert in late 1977, Roundabout was the last song, if I remember correctly :-) As teenager, I had to hurry to catch a train home.

What a classic song. I love the final competing guitar solos. It had to be a direct homage by Steve Howe to the section of The Beatles' medley on Side Two of Abbey Road where Paul, George and John play competing guitar licks. Howe's work at the end is superb and stands on its own merits sonically but it always reminds me of that Beatles' medley riffs.

As progressive rock this was an awe inspiring composition released in 1971. It has garnered many accolades and they are richly deserved. There is no connection to the book or movie. From Wikipedia, "Anderson was aware of the title of Starship Troopers, the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein, and from that, got the idea of a "Starship Trooper being another guardian angel and Mother Earth"." If true, then it is clear that he never actually read the book. The same can be said of Paul Verhoeven, the director of the movie "Starship Trooper", because other than a few proper names, nothing in the movie is contained in the novel.

Great reaction to this masterpiece, my favorite Yes song from their best album (with "Close to the Edge"). Glad you cited Chris Squire, the bassist, at the end of the video. He quite revolutionarized the role of this instrument and without him, Yes is not Yes. The coda of "Starship Trooper" (called "Wurm") is one of my most loved rock moment and a sort of musical equivalent of an orgasm to my ears. Not sure but Kurt Cobain may have borrowed the riff for his "In Bloom".

Yes have a lot of good songs like: "Close to the Edge", "Owner of a Lonely Heart", "Yours Is No Disgrace" (from the same album), "The Gates of Delirium", "And You and I ", "Don't Kill the Whale", "It Can Happen", "Siberian Khatru", "Changes", "Heart of the Sunrise" and many, many more. I don’t know why, but they could write music for Hollywood, science fiction films, for example, for Spielberg, because their music is more than just songs, these are whole compositions, of course Yes is considered a progressive rock band, but there are elements of jazz and opera, as I noted HarrI which bribe the listener even more. For me, Yes is on par with progressive rock monsters like Pink Floyd and Rush.

Perhaps the greatest outro in Rock. The simplist chord changes in the whole song; A relentless but slow buildup of dynamics, adding layers one at a time; The tempo is dead steady; The heat builds until it seems like it can’t possibly get any hotter. Then they hit you with a guitar solo. Masterpiece.
