For years I avoided attempting the drive out to the Temple of the Sun and Moon in Capitol Reef National Park. I was afraid of fording the creek, worried about getting stuck in sand, and generally thought it was just too risky to see these unique natural land formations. But on my visit in November 2022, I decided to give it a try. Here's my advice: don't try fording the river. You don't need to, unless you want to make it a loop trip without backtracking. But if you don't mind returning on the same road, it's actually a pretty easy drive out to the Temple of the Sun and Moon.
You'll want to take Caineville Wash Road, which turns off Utah Route 24 18.5 miles east of Capitol Reef National Park's visitor center. It's a dirt road that remains in pretty good condition throughout the journey. The road travels north, then curves northwest as you drop down into Cathedral Valley. Signs will point you in the right direction, but it doesn't hurt to pre-load maps of the area into your phone.
In this video I'll show you the drive from U-24 out to the Temple of the Sun and Moon. The drive back is in a separate video. Both are worth watching, since the scenery is different in every direction!
I made this trip in November 2022.
