Rifles, especially AR-15s, are ideal for home defense. Contrary to the myth of overpenetration, the opposite is true. AR-15s penetrate less than pistol rounds inside of structures, and certainly not any more than pistols.
Rifles are more accurate, easier to shoot, and more lethal than pistols at any distance. Additionally, they have more ammunition capacity than pistols, with more effective ammunition.
Lights are easily mounted to rifles for identification purposes, and backup iron sights provide a redundant sighting system in the event of an optic failure.
If you are serious about defending your home, you should use an AR-15 or AK-74 rifle. You will be well-served with either, and the choice is yours.

I live in California. I have hundreds of armed gang members who have access to whatever guns or ammo they can afford living around me who would murder me and my family to steal my AR15. I have a 10 round magazine, a bullet button and will have to get a background check every time I buy ammo. My anger keeps me warm at night.

Great info, Thank you. I used My Ruger AR 556 to deter a bad person attempting to enter the front door of mi casa last year without firing, Without me having my defensive weapon he surely would have caused harm to me and my wife. Some day, with extra time and money I would like to attend your class. Best regards , Andrew Michie. # 9

I listen to what you say. Daniel Defence rocks. I bought same rifle. Called DD to see about replacing cam pin after I noticed unusual wear after first range trip. Got package in 3 days. DD had sent me entire BCG free of charge. Also I bought (S/N pre-89,000) Trijicon MRO, and had trouble focusing. Trijicon fixed free of charge. Placed a Streamlight 500 lumen TLR-7 in front of fixed front sight. Blue Force sling. Loaded with Hornady 75gr TAP T2 Nato 5.56 found online. Because I watch your channel. Many thanks from an average American unable to attend Valor Ridge at this time.

On Monday morning (12:15 AM) I had a knock on the door. That woke me up, a few seconds later, they turned the door knob. First thing I grabbed was my AR. I heard voices, but they were not speaking English. Here in Rochester MN, there is a sizable Somali population, as does the Twin Cities. I stayed up until 4AM, thinking they may come back with reinforcements. Luckily nothing happen. But this morning I went to the range and shot 200 rounds out of my AR. God Bless you and your channel for helping us regular guys to prepare for the worse.

My ARs are budget builds but they work. The one thing I have in addition to what you mentioned is a laser. I hear people say they don’t like them but for indoors or at night, I have found there’s nothing faster for getting on target and maintaining a full field of view. I have the Streamlight light/laser combo on an AR pistol. After running through drills inside my home and in my yard at night, it’s just hard to beat. That’s just my opinion though. Enjoyed the video.

Is the the DD M4A1 model? Only reason I ask is because it looks like it has the RISII rail system and the pinned flash hider on it. If so its a carbine gas system, not a middy unless they've recently changed them. I run that rifle myself, its heavy as lead, but its a tank and accurate.

I can concur on the 5.56 ball ammo has the tendency to just disintegrate, sheer, and splinter off into small pieces after impacting common wood and like materials...so, yes, not to worry about it flying off into the neighborhood going thru houses, apartments, and then into cars trucks, and trains or whatever - not likely at all from what I have seen. I do like the AR15 for the many reasons mentioned and more. Great video!!!

It’s because of the velocity. A 55 grain bullet is tiny, but it is going at a blistering speed of Over 3,000 feet per a second (556 NATO out of 16” barrel). Since it’s so fast and light it basically fragments to peace’s AFTER it has hit the first resistance. However, whatever it first hits, it penetrates extremely well, and more than a lot of other calibers. But if it’s something like: dry wall, space, then dry wall again or similar, it doesn’t do as good as most pistols. Reid knows what’s up.

I feel like I have this argument once a month. And it's always with someone who says "the sound of a shotgun racking..." I forget what comes after because I usually stop listening. Not very mature on my part, I'm working on it. Also, the last 3 of 4 guys who said that to me can't tell me what load they're using anyway, just that it's "specially designed for home defense"

Don't even waste your time. More recoil, less ammo, more time in between shots, harder to manipulate. It doesn't matter to shotgun fudds man. They do not understand that deadly force is different than patterning their gun.
@Excalibur01
@Excalibur01 6 жыл бұрын
A shotgun has always been a "specialized" weapon. It isn't a bad gun but as Reid says it is a hard kick on you, no semi so longer follow up shots. It's much more louder than a rifle and especially more so in doors. It can feel heavier and less handy. Less capacity and longer time to reload if you need to. I also think for a beginner shooter who doesn't train or practice, working the pump is surprisingly hard under stress especially if someone's coming to kill you.

Exacliber01 Shotguns do come in semi and AR15's are a fuck load louder than shotguns. Recoil can be managed with different loads and the gas system of some semi shotguns make their recoil as soft as an AK. Some semi-auto shotguns have box magazines, so speed of reloading isn't even an issue these days. The only real drawback of a shotgun that cannot be easily overcome today is ammo capacity.

Very similar setup and I also have a homemade sling that Main Prepper posted years ago, my main reason for a sling inside is the fact that it’s strapped to you makes it harder for multiple intruders to grab it from you and use your own weapon against you.

Using ranger band or a silicone band on the stock to secure the slack of your sling works good. Got the idea from the "B Sling" made by John Mcphee. I also run the MFT Backup Light on my AR, it's small, light, and also has a red light. If mounted underneath the barrel you can turn the red light on in low/no light conditions and if the rifle is pointed slightly down, it won't give your position away..

Daniel Defense hands down a great rifle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX_EpoxpftyVa6c I don't think the reliability is too bad if you get the right quality parts, correct buffer, spring and all that stuff to make sure it runs smoothly. But for sure the long term reliability i don't like.. I can see the appeal of them if you live in a small tight corner house, or maybe a bullpup as well even though i only have shot one once. It was a tavor and only ever did a magazine, it was pretty different but i liked it.. I'm still lacking a flashlight here. I do have a nice small handheld one, but gripping it and holding the forearm of the rifle is really awkward and not too secure, need a mount.. I learned that when i had a black bear make a lot of noise one night here lol. Even though it worked ok ish enough, just too annoying plus if you had to open doors you lose the line of sight because of obvious reasons, definitely need to add a mount.. I been slacking off.. What ya really need is a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range. They are hard to get, poor Arnold couldn't even find one in the gunshops in terminator 1.
@QarthCEO
@QarthCEO 6 жыл бұрын
Less effective, sure, but to just banketly say that an AR with a barrel shorter that 16" (an SBR) is "unreliable" is straight shit talking and does nothing but harm your credibility, Reid. The police and US Military uses AR's with barrels shorter than 16" and they function just fine. Like any other AR, it depends on how they are built.

In RSA, when you apply for a self-defense license for a semi-auto rifle, the head of the central firearms bureau/registry in Gauteng will almost 100% of the time decline your application on grounds that "there is no adequate need for a self-loading rifle for self-defense" even when the FCA doesn't make any such restriction. Americans are fortunate in this regard that you aren't really restricted nearly as heavily on how many or what type of firearms you're allowed to own.

My wife and me were talking about the whole gun control thing and I told her I wouldn't mind having a semi-automatic rifle like the M14 or AR-15 and she was like why would you need that for self-defense and I told her well most likely if someone tried to rob us they would have a pistol and if I had the option I would grab my high-powered semi-automatic rifle before I would my pistol. Also any kind of semi-automatic shotgun would be excellent for close quarters home defense as well.

I definitely agree with an AR for home defense. And a good AR with light, BCM, DD, or FN.

Thank you for mentioning the AK-74. Underrated rifle. Would you recommend 7n6 for home defense?

Reid, what are your thoughts on: A. An 11.5” SBR 5.56 B. Supersonic 300 Blackout C. 9mm Pistol Caliber Carbine (like a CZ scorpion) - for home defense purposes?

Both a and b are great be it you have proper ammo (mk262 mod0 and 110 grain vmax) but c sucks in that context

Great video,. It really provides some food for thought. I am actually using a pistol caliber carbine for self defense instead of a rifle caliber carbine for my home defense weapon, mainly to prevent hearing damage. With my PCC, I get all of the benefits of the rifle you listed: 1) Easier to shoot under stress than a pistol 2) Holds more rounds than a pistol 3) More accurate than a pistol 4) Can be shot at greater speed than a pistol The only thing I lose when using a PCC vs a standard rifle caliber carbine is the increased lethality of the rifle round. That is certainly important. In exchange, I get a firearm that is not only quieter than a standard rifle, but it is quieter than a pistol using the same round. My father is an ear nose & throat surgeon, so I am a little extra sensitive about doing things that could result in hearing loss. Suppressors are illegal in my state, so that is not an option. Leaving electronic hearing protection near my gun is a good idea, but unless I leave it on permanently, I run the risk of it inhibiting my hearing during the fight. If I do leave it on permanently, I have to develop a schedule for changing the batteries. Even with all of that, I worry that I might forget to put them on and just grab the rifle and go. A last plus that I just found out about is that since USPSA has recognized PCC as a shooting division, I can do dynamic practice at USPSA matches whenever I want. We have AT LEAST one indoor match every month, year round and it increases to 3-5 matches per month from various clubs in the area when the weather warms up and we can have competition outside (April to November). Mine certainly isn't the best solution for everybody , but I just wanted to explain my line of thinking behind my decision.

Mr. Reid,, all I can afford right is my Arsenal SLR 107fr. I just picked up some 8m3. Would you say that I should run it anyways? also have a g19 with 135 gr hydrashok. I live in an apartment, 2nd floor with people above and below. Thanks for your videos, they've helped me more than you could imagine and given my family comfort during the hurricanes down here in FL. Would love to come train with you guys when I take my vacation, but i might have to bring the whole family!

My Mosin 91/30 is my preferred home defense rifle. With the bayonet on the rifle I can engage any threat in my house while chilling in my recliner.

Hey Reid, do you mind doing a video on child gun safety? We have a 3 year old daughter and I can't leave a loaded rifle next to my bed. I was considering purchasing a quick safe and keeping it next to my bed, but not sure if you have any other ideas. We are training our daughter to not touch guns unless we tell her, but that only goes so far. Currently the best I can do is keep my CCW on a high shelf in the closet when it isn't on me, otherwise all my other firearms are in the safe.

Reid, what are your thoughts on having a good 9mm or greater carbine as a home defense weapon? I'm talking the Ruger pc 9 or any of the 9mm/45/10mm carbines with 16" barrels

I like my slr-104fr for home defense. It is super compact with the folding stock. 5.45x39 is good against tissue but not as much velocity and penetrating power as 5.56

For a rifle light, assuming you don't need an IR light, Streamlight is better than Surefire. A Protac Rail Mount II costs half of what a Scout does, is brighter, has more functions, and is just as durable. I run one on all my rifles and even sold a Scout Mini to acquire another Surefire.

Also in a scenario where the bad guy tries to acquire or fight for my weapon, I'd rather have a little length of material for leverage or for my body to cover the weapon. you can safely lay down over a rifle and it would be safer than trying to lay cover or control of a handgun.
