I love that this game made a reference to Corporal Wojtek the Syrian beer drinking cigarette smoking brown bear who was bought by Polish soldiers as a young cub and trained to help move ammunition crates and fight as a private in World War II. It's a very interesting story and Wojtek is one of my favorite historical figures. Even if he is just a silly old bear.

Actually, back in these old times, the life expectancy wasn't lower because people weren't growing old, it's because there were a lot of infantile deaths. Those were being counted and that brought the statistics lower, so people probably did live into their 50s or older at least.

The first time I played this game, it really hit me when Lorsulia was killed. Especially the way it was done reminded me of how Princess Shireen was killed in Game of Thrones. My planning went so hardcore after that, even if Atana breached the gates we outnumbered them. I let Ivo live in the end though so that the people could spit on him every day. Fair play Dad, you got one of the best endings!

Lorsulia's death was definitely impactful, yet after her foreboding letter coupled with poor Dusty getting *skinned* I think the writing was on the wall that she was about to die. Ivo is a madman, do people really expect him to think logically? Besides, Ivo doesn't *need* Lorsulia to take the throne. What's to stop him from wiping out the entire royal lineage, conquering Davern and replacing them with a new king? Lorsulia had value, but she wasn't a requirement. Proclaiming Lorsulia and her family are evil magic users would only rally others' to the cause, and provide a justifiable reason to dispose of them. Ivo probably deluded himself into believing he was holy and righteous for his actions. Burning Lorsulia would also free him up to marry someone else. So, in other words, Ivo is operating by his *own* internal logic rather than something more universal.

In regards to 12 being old for that time because "people didn't live as long": while it's true that, on average, life expectancy during the European medieval period was lower than it is now, that's mainly due to higher rates of infant mortality which skew the data - if you managed to survive your first 10 or so years, there was a good chance you'd live to be 60+. Of course, this number was often lower for women due to the complications of childbirth, but seeing as that's not something Asalia needs to worry about, it doesn't really factor into our estimate.

​​@@hedgehog3180around 40 was pretty normal for average people from my understanding and the wealthy were usually between 40 and 60 but people making it to their 80s or 90s wasn't unheard of which would bring the average up some. Once you're past like 15 your immune system is pretty well developed for most people so any random cut isn't going to be that big of an issue cause the immune system is really good at taking care of the body even without external help like washing the injury or antibiotics, not doing those things makes it more likely you'll have an infection if it's a particularly bad cut but any random cut wouldn't have been a death sentence. A bad enough one would but normal cuts wouldn't have been anywhere near as big of an issue

I mean that would be how medieval politics worked. It'd be hard to rule anywhere if you didn't have some sort of legitimate claim to the throne since the nobles would all be upset with you because they lost all of their previous connections and deals. It's similar to how today Russia's claims to Eastern Ukraine aren't seen as legitimate and as such Russia has been suffering on the world stage and is facing insurrection in those areas.

They named that bear after the (Russian train station orphan of unknown origin) mascot of the surviving Polish army in WW2, renowned for his love for cigarettes and ability to carry heavy artillery shells. After the war he was retired to a public zoo, and former polish soldiers kept jumping the fence to bear tackle their bear. Those were consistently the times when the bear was happiest after the war. He got depressed stuck in his habitat all day.

Fun fact, Wojtek was a famous bear that was adopted by a polish artillery unit in the 2nd world war after they visited him in the Edinburgh zoo, but after the unit was called to go to frontlines, their commander told them that they couldn't bring a mascot to war. Now by this point, wojtek was living the life of a grunt, drinking beer and smoking alongside his comrades, so they did what any respectable friend group would do and enlisted the bloody bear. Funny thing is, when they finally acame across the enemy, and the members of his unit started carrying crates of artillery shells about, he understood the mission immediately, he began bringing crate after crate of shells towards the grunts, and for his service he was promoted to corporal. A fucking bear could give lawful orders to privates, now this is unfortunately where Wojtek's service ends, as shortly after the war his unit was disbanded and was returned to the Edinburgh zoo, but this didn't stop his brothers from literally breaking into his exhibit every so often and cracking a couple beers with the chonky bastard, god bless that bear. And I guess someone beat me to the punch, fuck
