I was struggling a bit with this first-time reaction to Angelina Jordan's brilliant cover of the iconic song Yesterday from The Beatles. I couldn't put my finger on what kind of emotion Angelina Jordan's singing was giving me. I felt she was acting in a certain way to portray a specific mood. I had to go back to this reaction video after watching Angelinas Cover of Yesterday a couple of more times (It gets better by each listen). And I had to record my finishing thoughts, because it suddenly came to me - for me, she is portraying a woman that is on the verge of depression. That explains, the way I see it, why Angelina Jordan is sitting in a shopping cart, barely moving and singing in a slightly drawn-out manner. Like she's in a dream. She is suffering from a debilitating depression. She is motionless with emotional pain.
With all great works of art there is a lot of room for interpretation and this is of course only my personal view of Angelina Jordan's cover of The Beatles song Yesterday. Tell me how Angelina Jordan's version makes you feel, compared to the original.
I hope you enjoy my Angelina Jordan Reaction.

Back in 1962 I was 13 and heard the Beatles for the first time. I fell in love. I have heard thousands of covers by every performer. I would be amused at anyone trying to sing their songs. Even the good ones. I’m not laughing anymore. What she’s done with this song is astonishing. I never in my wildest dreams would think I would like another persons interpretation better than an original Beatles song. That day has come. Angelina Jordan is a gift to us from the angels. I just wish I was younger to witness her career.

Here Angelina is expressing sadness and remorse - regrets things that cant be undone, Melancholy in full flow. I see it as she is boxed in by circumstances (in that shopping cart) that she is not expecting to overcome. Thankfully in life Angelina has no regrets (I hope), the road ahead is full of possibilities, she appears to be enjoying being 15 years old - just yearning for the chance to perform a concert - live - like in the old days...

She's just getting started... little chance for remorse this soon. I consider remorse a product of perceived failure.. She is a Million Miles from being a failure. I think we are trying to read too much into this. Some folks also think she is not making it because she is not on the charts.. Relax!! She and her family are doing it the way they want.. it's just not on our timeline. Brilliance does not always register on a chart.

The first couple of times I listened to Angelina sing this song, it was a feeling of melancholy, almost brought me sadness, even a tear to the eye. She sang it so beautifully and I cannot stop listening to it, and I grew up listening to the Beatles and have heard this many many times over the years. Never got a response from him either. Republic Records should get Angelina back on the show "THE VIEW" when they finally start promoting her. She was there right after she won Norway;s got talent. These people just will not respond to a ordinary fan. I long for the radio days when "WOLFMAN JACK" was to go to person if you wanted to hear a certain song played. Yes, indeed, Angelina the artist wants us to interpret the way we want it. Her sitting inside ( stucked in the cart) can be interpreted in hundred of ways. My interpretation will also depend on my mood, today I would like to feel the emotion Angelina has when she sing the song. Like feeling vulnerable, feeling like a small girl under the custody of parents, feeling secure snd stay put not going anywhere, while everybody does the walking. Tired ? I will rather sit here safe and sound and sing my song. I am depending on someone to push the cart. I enjoy it here like sight sering in the supermarket, Just being a good girl following parents order? I don’t know why I came to that point. On the other hand. She could use the moment sitting there recollecting the past and thinking about her future. Yeah it seems like yesterday but time flies And now I am growing up but I seem not to go nowhere it is safer here where I am, taking cared of by grown up , I cant decide what I want to be and where to go, not at this moment. I need to wait.💜❤️💙

These videos shot in 'The Color Crib' were probably done to a prerecorded track, as is usual for this type of production. One indication of that is in 'Billie Jean' where, in the purple room segments, she is clearly holding the mic the wrong way round and it certainly wouldn't sound the same. The effect of really doing that can be heard on 'I'd rather go blind'.

Hello, Pontus. It is always a pleasure to have a little of your appreciations and feelings regarding Angelina's work. In my case it also happens to me that some interpretations come to mind when I look at the works that she presents. I have no idea if I can get even a little bit close to the true messages she is trying to convey, but I am sure there is always a message. As I mentioned there, I have learned to look at AJ's work and her personality, as that of a complex, multi-talented artist who uses all the tools available to her to convey various messages. In choosing her songs, the previous study that she does about how that song should sound and the best way to interpret the feelings that it provokes in her. But also the staging. I think quickly, for example in her covers for "Stay" and "Nothing break like ...", where her original artists appear making "extended use of their physical qualities", while Angelina prefers, precisely there, to appear with his shirt closed to the last button on the neck. As if she doesn't want to overlook how she feels about it. They are just my interpretations, of course. In this case, from the video for "yesterday", I wonder to what extent the two obvious relationships clash ... the girl from yesterday, who enjoyed being inside a shopping cart with her mother and the girl from today, many sometimes pushed by her own fans to define themselves in advance, with criticism of her logical age experiments, with her eye color, her makeup, her wardrobe, her rehearsals where she tries different voice inflections, etc. Where the girl, who still has a long playground to explore before defining a style, is suddenly "packaged" and placed inside a shopping cart ... but this time she is no longer so funny. Anyway, I believe and hope that this is just an exaggerated interpretation on my part and I continue to enjoy the journey, without caring or needing that we arrive so soon at the final destination. Warm regards to you and to all the angels who support Angelina.

185 cm curled up in a shopping cart with your knees in your mouth and being able to sing like this (!?). On the symbolism of the video there can be various interpretations. They range from the more banal one, of the sepia monochromatic painting, that is vintage, which recalls the title of the song "Yesterday". At the psychological reading, of her sitting in her trolley she tells us: "do not load me with expectations, I am still a child".

I agree that Angelina has a boatload of melancholy, of resignation that a valued relationship has irreparably ended, and she communicates that more effectively than the original IMHO. I listened again intently to test your "why I" vs "why he" hypothesis and I believe she is asking "Why he had to go" (at both 0:52 and 1:37). I didn't like the TikTok snippet at all, but this is great! I think she captures the melancholy of this song beautifully. I also think sitting in a shopping cart reminds her of when she was small enough to ride around in one. At 6', it must have been a while. I can't imagine singing in that position. The song might also remind her of when she could just sing and not worry about crap like social media and business. I always tend to forget that I really don't know how good she is, I think I do, but she's only 15 and getting better all the time. That's why she keeps surprising me.

I was very much in love with my ex-husband and it was a devastating breakup for me, I wanted to hide away, hide from time and everything, I remember getting under a desk and staying there a long time, the shopping cart somehow reminds me of that, it still brings back a little bit of that pain. I find it totally necessary to give you a woman's perspective here: Her voice is DEPRESSED. She is depressed! Her "love" just left and didn't tell her why. She is depressed .. heartbroken .. she is embodying the song. It's brilliant. re: monochrome set .. this is art .. we have to remember she is 15 .. although, quite frankly, I really like it. It makes her totally stand out. You look at nothing but Angelina .. the stuff on the shelves is neutral .. nothing intriguing anywhere .. EXCEPT this 6' girl folded up in a shopping cart. What can possibly be wrong? in the middle of my writing this you came back after thinking about it and had 'made friends' - as best you can, with the concept. Good for you. I am impressed at your loyalty and your love. And yes .. other than Million Miles, which was grief rather than depression, we haven't heard her voice quite like this .. but is it not magnificent? oh my goodness .. it is completely and thoroughly brilliant! Have you never had your heart broken? btw .. Angelina does not say "I had to go" she says "HE had to go." Different. I have watched at least 50 reactions .. people get it! And , by the way, she is not being pushed around! She's just sitting in it .. depressed. I am responding to both your reactions . and I really really appreciate that you are trying to comprehend it. Angelina makes decisions for her singing from the emotional body .. which is why everyone feels so strongly when they hear her sing. The fact that "she's depressed " (the girl in the song) doesn't mean she's mentally ill. The exaggeration of someone pushing her around means nothing .. that's not what's happening here. If anything .. I would say it's totally aligned with the lyrics "now I need a place to hide away" .. she looks around and chooses the cart .. totally transparent .. so she wants her loved ones to know it's not completely serious .. she's not locked up trying to figure out a way to kill herself .. she's simply sitting in a shopping cart until she can stand the reality that's happening and then perhaps she can unfold her body and take up her life again. Heartbreak. You are exactly right .. Paul did it from a man's perspective .. she did it from a woman's. Different indeed. I loved what you did in your two part reaction. thank you very much. I hope what I had to say helped too.

Great original take on this Pontus. A couple of things: One is, I hear “why HE had to go” and you hear “why I had to go.” Listening to it several times it is very ambiguous on that phrase; I’m hearing “why” broken up into two syllables, “wah-eye he had to go,” but I can see why you would hear it as “wah I-ee had to go.” What are others hearing? If this is deliberate ambiguity on her part, that is genius! The second thing is she almost never changes the gender; think of “Song for A.” But she does here..

Hi Chris, I think you're spot on. It seems that Pontus has mis-heard the lyrics here, I agree that it's her jazzy broken 'why' that's causing the confusion. Also, on your point about changing the gender, I think it was easy to do with this song, so why not? In 'Song for A' she was, presumably, asked to sing the song 'as is' and wasn't given the opportunity to change it since it wasn't her song or a cover. In 'Billie Jean' a gender change just isn't possible when you consider what the song is about.

You were the only person that I have heard who pointed out that Angelina sang "why I had to go, I don't know..." instead of why "she" had to go as in the original Beetles rendition. That really informs why the song is so much more sad and melancholic as sung by Angelina. It seems to me that it is a much deeper rejection to say to someone that they have to go than it is to say that I have to go.

You know, Pontus, there was someone expecting to be checked out and taken home in that shopping cart, and the potential purchaser left her there to extract herself from the cart. This is what death does to love. Angelina knows about that. Separation like that is irretrievable in this life, and she knows that now. She hit on the solution long ago with hope, but when one is still in the cart hope is not there. I think you caught it just as she meant it. This lady lives poetry and shares it with us.

Interesting reaction and analysis! I agree with those connecting the shopping cart with a safe past that Angelina’s character longs back to. But obviously she no longer fits in the cart…so the past is history, and she will eventually have to get out of there and push on in life. «Smooth transition between the notes» is a brilliant description. In music theory, we call this glissando. It is quite difficult to do, because technically the time you spend between the notes you are in disharmony. It is the opposite of Angelina’s fast riffs, where she can be so fast and precise that some people will beleve it is autotune. But Angelina has always been a master of glissando too. She uses it a lot in «I’ve Got a Spell on You». Another great example is the line «Maaaaan’s built a traaain» from «It’s a Man’s World», where she slides up to the notes. (Glissando is used a lot in blues.) While her voice is of course instantly recogniseable, the technique Angelina uses here is very different from «Billie Jean». There she chops off words and phrases in a staccato style that goes very well with the raspy voice she is using. Here she uses a smooth voice and glissando to connect the notes in long, uninterrupted streams, creating a very dreamy impression - just like you have suddenly been kicked out of a relationship and think that «no, this can’t be real». In short, these are two examples of an artist having access to any tools and colours that you can think of, but choosing very wisely which ones to use for each particular piece. (That goes even within the song. Notice, for instance, the phrasing of «…there’s a shadow… with heavy vibrato on the fiirst and third word creating a haunting impression, versus no vibrato on «…now I feel…», which is exactly the same melody line.)

You seem very knowledgeable about these things. Thanks for sharing, very interesting. I went back and listened to 'there's a shadow'. Brilliant. I'm guessing that Angelina thinks of yesterday when life was easier and there was no pressure. Now, she's working on an album (with 7'th heaven on her shoulders?) that hopefully will go into everyone's shopping carts. "Why I had to go" could be referring to her moving to LA to give out albums. I had a similar experience with my photography hobby... I signed a contract with a pictures bank company to maybe make a few $'s from my hobby. I had a bad gut feeling that I couldn't identify at first, but then I realized that I didn't want to take pictures for cash, I simply wanted to do it for fun, and I didn't want commercial considerations to interrupt me when I'm in the "zone" taking pictures and being at my most creative. Maybe a form of performance anxiety. I can imagine many artists going through such a stage!

Pontus, I apologize for somehow missing this superb reaction until today. I cannot compliment it enough. Why? In your desire to identify the unusual, "giving up" (for her) feeling that Angelina was transmitting and you were receiving, you gave me a sudden insight into her performance. (BTW, this came before I watched your "week later" insight. I think this agrees with it). For some reason, the pivotal, emotional lyrics seemed to me to be "I need a place to hide away". The last time she sang them, she even brought her hand to her head (signifying thinking) not to her heart (the seat of emotions). Interestingly, she never once brought her hand to her heart this whole song which again is unusual for Angelina. She just listlessly motioned with her free hand. So what did she want to hide away from? From her pain. One hides from painful emotions most easily (except for "self medication") by keeping one's thoughts constantly, and rapidly, on anything else except the pain and its circumstances. So she was signaling that she had given up at least on the painful consequences of the broken relationship and no longer wanted to feel them. But Angelina was signaling by the apathy of the song that, of course, that is no answer. In almost every song except this one, Angelina takes us on a journey from emotional darkness to light (at least at some level). She most succinctly expresses this journey lyrically in "What is Life" which ends this way: "Love life with all the good and bad The good and bad." She starts out this time with “good” this time, drawing it out long and lovingly. Then when she sings “bad”, she sings it much shorter (giving it less precedence) just as lovingly - as though bad can be an opportunity to create more good. Her placement of these lyrics at the end of "What is Life", infers this cycle of bad and good is her summary of what life inevitably is. Four years after she wrote this song, her interpretation of "Yesterday" seems to be an implied cautionary tale of what may happen to us if we ignore the inevitable "bad" emotions and don't process them in a way in which "good" comes out of our life experiences. In summary, I believe that Angelina wants us to make the best of the darkness in our lives and transform it into light so we can better live loving, productive lives in service to others. 🙏💖 P. S. Your catching of her change of lyrics was brilliant!!! And dealing with our suppressed emotions can lead us out of the depression you so insightfully and aptly referred to.

Why is Angelina sitting In a shopping chart? My take on that is that Angelina is always giving her interpretation of the lyric, and here the lyric is "need a place to hide away, and the title of the song is Yesterday",so here she is remembering the days as a little child, and it was like Yesterday, when she was being pushed in these shopping carts around in the supermarkets by her parents or grandparents, like children all over the world like to do,hiding away from the world in the safety of the shopping cart(and in Angelina,'s world in the safety of her shields).

You may have been struggling to find a descriptive word for her emotional tone and missed "wistful" (having or showing a feeling of vague or regretful longing). I think that this "cover" is a signature statement by her about where she is in her life/career. Now she is a musical commodity who is being influenced (pushed around) by forces and influences that were absent when she was a pre-teen. She is smart enough and has enough support around her to survive the change. Can't wait for her Las Vegas performance in the near future.

While it was hard to make out, I believe these were the lyrics: [PM] I'm not half the man I used to be [AJ] I'm not half the girl I used to be In both versions they are singing about themselves, the narrator of the story [PM] Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say [AJ] Why I had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say In the original version 'she' is the other person who has left; in the new version 'she' is speaking about herself in the past. Read simply this would imply that it's about not wanting to let go of the past, a simpler version of oneself as a child. The twist - if I heard it correctly - is the bit at the end: "I don't know, she wouldn't say". To me this implies a forlorn longing to get answers from one's former self - as if the younger you might actually have the answers gained from experience - paradoxically. I'd be interested to know what anyone else thinks.

I’m not hearing a ‘she’ as you do there at the end. Although I do hear an ‘I’ as you also do, but a lot hear that as a ‘he’. Sometimes I almost hear the line ‘he wouldn’t say’ as ‘you wouldn’t say’. It’s very difficult to know if these ambiguities are on purpose 🤷

@@Pontus-Osterlin FWIW... I found an earlier version of her singing this (from TikTok) where she actually sang the the latter line straight - as per the original. (Which I guess it what let me to the conclusion I came to.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpDXfmaKn9ecjJI
