Have you ever wondered how vintage routines from the past would score? Wait no longer! In 1988, Daniela Silivas was awarded a “perfect 10,” for her compulsory floor routine. Elena Shushunova and Svetlana Boguinskaia (Boginskaya) both scored 9.90s. Today, though, the results would have been very different!

it was sprung in 1988, actually either the same or very similar level of spring as well. also they didn't do their actual tumbling passes in compulsories, they just did a dance through with minimal tumbling. Daniela Silivas literally first did her double-double at these olympics, and you can see the level of spring hasn't really hardly changed at all.

If I remember correctly, the diagrams for this routine showed the first leap going into the corner didn’t have to show 180 split. Also the straddle leap at 1:00 didn’t require 180 either. I guess that’s why so many gymnasts didn’t hit 180 on these leaps in over 4 years of training this routine.

That was so nice of the judges to not require 180° back then - every skill nowadays has a required position.

@@worldartgym it was possibly seen more as artistic flourish . Like there was no requirement for hand repulsion in the back handspring on the beam routine yet many top-scoring gymnasts did it that way.

This is spot on. My sister was a gymnast back then and I recall her telling me about the requirements. Daniela excelled at this compulsory quad because her extension, artistry and technique were unmatched on beam and floor. Though full split wasn’t required in that straddle leap, it showed her mastery of both the artistic and technical aspects of the routine. Not to mention her interpretation. What’s impressive is that when comparing this with the ‘87 World’s Compulsory, both scored 10.0 but her interpretations are quite different. In ‘87 her dance elements were lighter and more fluid. In ‘88, she was sharper and used the sharper notes to emphasize perfection in a pose, leap or flourish and worked in harmony with the pianist. Silivas was levels and light years ahead of Shoushounova, Boginskaya and Dobre when it came to compulsory floor and beam.

By this period in gymnastics history execution/ “virtuosity” has pretty much been established and little has changed from this aspect over time. Line is line, straight is straight, pointed feet are pointed feet, deviations are deviations. In videos used as examples, content creators don’t tend to use videos of routines where there are major unplanned mistakes (unless evaluating the results of a specific competition), and these are the deductions that tend to vary from code to code, whereas built-in form errors tend to be standard and comparable between codes and amongst the top gymnasts should usually incur no more than 0.1 (to 0.3 if serious) deduction for each error. Doing comparisons like this allows for a measured comparison of the timelessness of the great gymnastic legends - these days execution scores on floor in elite levels never crack the 9.0 mark, a mid-8 is considered outstanding, so these gymnasts are still outstanding in their own right if they would still score in the 9s by modern standards. It reminds us not to dismiss gymnastics legends like Daniela Silvas as simply part of a bygone era, but as role models of execution, precision, and virtuosity to aspire to.

I would have taken an extra 0.1 twice for visibly flexed feet in 2 leaps for Shusonova. (Especially when compared to the others who had unquestionably pointed feet)

Sorry, I respectfully disagree. The form of several current gymnasts often have bent legs, separated legs, low incomplete splits on jumps, but have such a high starting score that they can get away with it. Bring back technical gymnastics with compulsory routines and optional routines. Who’s great at all of it.

This is more a comparison of what an Execution Score under today’s system would look like. Though, some leaps didn’t require a full 180 and judges didn’t deduct for small steps or balance checks back then, the bigger point is to show how Silivas’s overall technique and execution would fair much better under today’s scoring system than any of her contemporaries.

A 9.85 might have been more appropriate but under the standards back then, most of the deductions in the video, save flexed feet and amplitude, were not taken in the 80s. They didn’t always need to hit a 180 split in a leap or jump… look no further than Mary Lou Retton’s switch leap series on floor and beam from the previous quad. Back then if you had straight legs and pointed toes, five to ten degrees off was good enough 😆

Daniel como estana bien delgada pues la flexibilidad le ayudaba más 🎉 y pues es más ágil por eso le dieron el10 prefecto!
