These are a perfect size for me, I have two one on a jubilee bracelet which has never been worn, the other is pretty beat up, it stopped keeping good time years ago, didn't seem worth servicing as it cost way more to service than it cost from new, so it sat in the safe not sure what prompted me, but I checked it for being magnetised using a compass, it was very magnetised, put it over one of those demagnetiser units several times and it was back to normal, have it now on a president style bracelet, looks great and keep excellent time again.

Hi Spencer, great video review of an icon. I have a SKX009 and a SKX007. I notice the older models have a 4 o'clock crown vs the SKX's 3:45 crown. Why did Seiko change it from 4 to 3:45? Thank you.

I have a hunch on this subject. I bet it was so that the same date wheel could be used for both 3 o'clock and "3:45" crowns. The 31 numerals on a date wheel won't line up if you rotate the crown 1/12th of a rotation, as you would need to if using the same movement in both 3 and 4o'clock crown cases. So you would normally have to used a different date wheel for a 4o'clock crown. To get around this, you could design all the cases destined to house your movement so that 1 date wheel works for all of them, as Daini did with the 70xx and 7S series. We can calculate out an example for 3 vs "3:45" crowns. A dial face has 12 divisions for the hour, while a date wheel has 31 divisions for the day. Needless to say, 12 is not a factor of 31 (in fact, 31 is a prime number), so if you insist on putting the crown right on an hour position, it will only work for one position. But what's really important in this example is keeping the date wheel lined up with the date window on the dial, not keeping the crown lined up with the hour markers. So we need to calculate what intervals we can rotate the crown by and still keep the date wheel lined up. The answer is obviously by increments of 1 day, which is 1/31st of a full rotation. But what does that mean in terms of hours on the dial? 12 hours / 31 days = 0.3871 hrs/day Assuming our base position is 3o'clock, this means that the crown will end up plus or minus some multiple of 0.3871 hours away from 3, which is definitely not going to be a very round number. So how many increments is the crown of a 7S26 shifted from 3 o'clock? Base + Increment x Multiple = Position (hours) or Position (hr:min) 3 + 0.3871 x 1 = 3.3871 or 3:28.23 3 + 0.3871 x 2 = 3.7741 or 3:46.45 Looks like 2 increments (2 days of the date wheel) matches up pretty well with our "3:45" crown, which is actually more like 3:46.5, or about 3.77 hours.

Chester Snapdragon McPhisticuff you are exactly correct. One less part to manufacture and also speeds up production during assembly because you don’t need to install a separate date wheel for the different crown positions. You need only replace the day wheel, which, on these movements only requires removing a small c-clip and swapping in whatever day wheel you need.

I just bought an SKX173 from a small town AD that looks to have been neglected NOS for 15 years. It has a Singapore dial, A movement, and an Aug 2004 serial, and came with box and papers, and a warranty card the seller filled out in front of me... the tag and box had the wrong model number though (SKX175) which makes me a bit concerned it may not be true NOS. Everything looks to be the appropriate age, though, including the charming 7S26-only dive watch manual. Anything I should look out for on a watch that old with questionable newness? I imagine it doesn’t have much wear, but some things age no matter what. It was a little slow but I was able to correct that by nudging the regulator. I don’t have a timegrapher so I don’t know what the amplitude is like. I have an SKX007 I bought last year which I upgraded with an NH36 but this has pretty much replaced it as my daily wear. I can’t bring myself to stop wearing the 173 despite knowing I won’t dare swap the movement on it like I did with the 007. I prefer the dial design and I even like the old style rubber strap it came on.

I do like the jubilee-bracelet of the skx007. In fact I can't wear the skx on the rubber strap because of the crown guards which then tends to dig into my wrist, a major flaw of the skx's case in my opinion. With the bracelet I don't have that problem and it's very comfortable to wear, I don't get why so many people complain about it,

Great story, Spencer! Just wondered. Do you know when seiko stopped producing the 7s26 A-movements? I believe they vere introduced in 1996? The reason me wondering is that my skx009 has a A-movement with a serialnumber starting with "66". I bought the watch used in 2014, so either is it from 2006, or 1996. What do you think?

1996. This one of mine is "88" and has a "B", is from 2008.

The 7S26 B-movement was introduced in Oct. 2006 - so your watch can be from June 1996 or June 2006.

The millions they made you're bound to find the odd great one, although the fact that they stop very quickly if not worn, they are not going to wear out. They have good looks, but with the lack of Sapphire and lack of handwinding I always gave them a miss. I use my head. If I used my heart I probably would have bought one. My favourite daily edc is a Sea-gull Ocean Star which has Sapphire and handwinding and suits my wrist at 44mm and 13mm high with its curved lugs. I am brave to come on here and put my view out. I await the flak from the Seiko fans out there.
