This time-lapse video captures the moment when the world's only Armstrong Siddeley Mongoose engine was fitted into the world's only Hawker Tomtit.
One of our engineers, Gareth, has spent the last four years rebuilding the engine to be ready for this moment. During this time the master rod has been re-white metaled, together with the manufacture of a new cam pack, magneto drive gears and new tappets. The carburettor and oil pump have undergone an overhaul and all other parts have been cleaned, measured and refitted along with an engine rebuild.
But the work doesn’t stop here! There will be numerous tasks to complete until it is ready to take to the sky, including work to fit and adjust the carburettor, fit the priming system, fit the ignition harness, fit and time the magnetos to the engine and finally fix the propeller onto the airframe. When all of these have been completed it will be ready to carry out its initial engine runs.
