I was there the day the keel boat capsized. I was maybe about 10 years old and I was on Discovery Island with my dad 2 brothers and cousin. We were all playing hide and seek in the caves and it was my dads turn to find us. After 5-10 minutes of hiding and not being found, we went looking for my dad and he was in the water helping children and elderly folk out of the water off the capsized boat. Disney gave my dad a new change of clothes and shoes and bought my family dinner that night. I will never forget those boats.

He owned a yellow Opel Bumble Bee with a bad starter. Everyday after last formation a few of us had to push his car to get it started so he could drive home. To answer any questions, he parked it at home on a hill and rolled it to a start in the morning.

CORRECTION: I accidentally read the date of Disneyland's television debut from the script wrong as "1945" instead of "1954" and never caught it when re-watching the video over and over. I'm a little dyslexic when it comes to numbers and dates sometimes so forgive the blunder :) I also mis-read Richard Kraft's last name as "Keith".

So, thank you for this video--- I laughed, I cried and had a wonderful flashback. I can't speak to the Disneyland attraction, but I can tell you that one issue with the versions in WDW was the throttle cables breaking often, and low attendance. They actually moved them from Lib Square by Mansion over by the Rafts dock in Frontierland to garner more visitors. I actually remember sometime in 1998-99 ish when they started making the captains wear a personal floatation device along with the killcord that killed the engine if we were to ever fall off. (on a funnier note, I LOVE the Titanic reference, especially because during training, we were told that it steered backwards (push left to go right, etc) like the Titanic. I asked my trainer jokingly if the Gully would sink like the Titanic, he told me only if I found a large white iceberg in the river. Never the less, I came a little too close for comfort to the Twain due to wind and inexperience---no one on board, make a joke it was large and white.....lol and my river nickname was born.) This was my FAVORITE attraction I ever worked, thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Also his involvement in the fighting of Mexicans might not be the image a company might want to show. I don't agree with that, but ya gotta remember companies want cash, as they should, and the best way to get cash is to appeal to as many people as possible. i think they may have thought of it like this: "Will people be angry if Davey Crockett isn't there? no? will people get angry if he is? maybe." ... "well I guess ain't gun b no Davey" lol
@otaking35826 жыл бұрын
Ian Ingold His theme song talks about Davy killing a bear at age 3. Obviously people are gonna take the Disney version of him as seriously as they do Crocodile Dundee (the latter is even compared to Davy Crockett in the actual movie!) Also, I'll make the same argument here as for why Song of the South should get a Blu-ray release: Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Dumbo, Treasure Buddies, and especially Pocahontas are all far more racist, and yet they're all well remembered and got home media releases this century.

@@YesterworldEntertainment The two keelboats in Disneyland Paris, named the Coyote and the Raccoon, are in different situations right now. The Raccoon is currently rotting away somewhere in the backstage area behind Frontierland (pretty much like the Mark Twain Riverboat), and won't likely return. But the Coyote, which is docked at Smuggler's Cove on the shore of the Rivers of the Far West, is still operational and can be used anytime to evacuate guests from Big Thunder Mountain in case of an emergency. So yes, the Coyote won't be used as an actual Frontierland ride, but should something very wrong happen on Big Thunder Mountain, it will be back in service in no time.

Mike Fink's boat at Disneyland was a real treat back in 1958. Note the canoe in your clip -- that was a blast for 8 year olds in competing canoes racing and carrying on. My family's friend, Yale Gracey, was instrumental in so many attractions at Disneyland and Disney World. My college Business Law professor was the attorney charged with land acquisition for Disney without letting anyone know who was buying until the last tract . . . making 30,000 acres more or less (1968).

Horizons was basically Carousel of Progress 2.0 and was a co-project with GE (like CoP). If someone could convince GE to become an Epcot sponsor again, Horizons 2.0 could theoretically happen. Mission Space is getting very dated and worn and could easily be replaced - especially since its sponsor has bailed.

This is a wonderful video, especially for me. As a kid back in the 70s, after a long day in Disneyland, I always had at least 3 or 4 "C" tickets left. And I loved riding in the keel boats. So I would ride the keel boats over and over until my tickets were gone. Usually the waiting line worked out so I could disembark from one keel boat, get back in line, and ride on the other keel boat for the next loop around. I loved that the boats were not on a track. Each skipper and each ride went a different way around. And each skipper had a different patter for entertaining the passengers. I can still vividly remember one skipper say, "Over there is Bruce the moose. A little farther we can see Lucy moose. Sometimes we get to see Bruce the moose running footloose through the spruce with his girlfriend Lucy moose."

This, explains, so much! To begin with, I was born way too late in life. There's so much you've covered on your channel about Disneyland, I never had any idea about the Keel Boats (I went to Disneyland a lot, as a kid, either in 1997 or 1998), nor the origin of them and other things. I always wondered WHY, in Back To The Future, Lorraine's younger brother had that raccoon fur hat. I've seen that same type of hat here or there a couple times over the years outside of BTTF. I honestly never knew much about Davy Crockett, OR why Disneyland had Frontierland altogether. Anyway, yeah, I would give anything to go back to when the ride was new and be able to ride the original Snow White's Adventures (from what all can be seen anymore with pictures of what little video exists, of how it originally was, does not even look close to terrifying - but then again, my grandma told me that when she saw Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs when she was a little girl (I believe she was taken to see it not long after it premiered, or possibly a year after it came out, I don't know how long it ran after it's 1937 release, but she remembers seeing it either at 2 or 3 years old, she was born in '36), the evil queen scared her more than anything ever had, but she was maybe 2 or 3 when she saw it, so . . .)

I'm also the type of person in life that is never really scared, creeped out or terrified by what the general populous finds scary, creepy or terrifying. Seriously, people go on about how creepy and nightmare-fuel the original Mickey and Minnie costumes were, when Disneyland first opened - they were NOT creepy or scary! If anything, I feel they just give off a "classic" sort of feel or vibe, obviously they had not created or perfected the costumes yet, but it was at least something for the kids or even parents to enjoy.

I had a big gut feeling I pronounced it wrong in my initial takes, as I lived in LA for almost a decade, and heard it as you described, but completely forgot to re-record that part until after I posted it. Whoops 😬

Omg it wasn’t until seeing this video that I realized the Mike Fink Keel boats were gone from Disneyland.

I remember in the 70s and 80s seeing the Mike Fink Keel boats operate - but never taking them. I was in more of a rush just to get to Tom Sawyers's Island. We took the rafts over there. I loved the island, we would run all over the place, from the caves to the fort, it was super cool, a place you could burn some energy after waiting in lines all day. Never took the canoes either. Ha, we had a canoe and a river across the street when I was a kid. We always took the big ship if we were going to go around the rivers of America. The burning white man's village was cool.

This ride would be so easy to bring back! All they would need to do is have the boats redesigned by an actual naval architect, ballasted properly and make them into a single story ride. They could have them made with fiberglass hulls for low maintenance and wooden cabins for that authentic look and feel. Wish they would, this was a cool ride!

Any thought about doing an episode about the Tomorrowland boats that were at Disneyland till the mid 90s

Keelboats at Disneyland Paris are no longer in operation to guests but still maintained to respond in an unlikely case of an evacuation of Rivers of the far West or Big Thunder Mountain in the unlikely event a fire occurs and prevents evacuation from the tunnels nor the floating bridges

I was always wondering why they were shut down. Now I know why. Been on them many times growing up going to Disneyland. Last time I was on one was in the 80's. Going back to the park in Sep 2018 for my granddaughters first time there and two year birthday.
