"We haven't got the ghosts yet. But we are out - collecting - the ghosts." Walt Disney could turn delays into stories.

He'd be rolling in his grave to see the heavily IP based attractions that are replacing original rides... I despise the Maelstroms change... especially since it didn't bother to fix the Maelstroms original issues Walt would hate what they've done. They opted out of making interesting stories for a ride and instead take someone else's stories and cram them into a ride format... The only thing they're still good at is theming but they ffed that one up in Disney Land cali with the guardians of the galaxy attraction standing out like a giant space building in downtown Hollywood... who would've thought?

I read in an article that an imagineer watched "Bambi" after being stumped on how to remove Big Red. They realized the impact of the film was NOT seeing the mother's body and instead seeing the impact of a baby animal left alone. "Mother! Mother, where are you?" It seems that early on after opening they used dialog from the radio calls like "Big Red is down!" which is ambiguous, but still implies she was killed. Slowly they changed it so she for-sure lived. I think they could have kept mommy elephant dead out of view, instead showing Little Red tooting for her, all alone as an animatronic, even if it would have been a patch closing the ride down for a while. This stuff does happen to elephants IRL, and being the social creatures they are, they actually grieve their herd members' deaths, staying with a body for days and making unique sounds. A baby elephant all alone would be confused, but it would be less graphic yet still heartbreaking.

I wish that they had taken that approach, it would have been less graphic seeing a baby elephant motherless and all alone, have the message of poachers and not get a backlash from parents, it didn’t deserve

Eh, I still think a visible dead elephant would be more impactful. Which do more people consider to be heartwrenching, Bambi's mother's death, or Mufasa's death?

I was very disheartened to find that the poaching skit from the safari had been removed. I learned at a very young age what poaching was and the importance of the issue FROM that aspect of the safari. I understand how it may not be appropriate for children, but, as I said, that’s how I learned so young.

I was lucky enough to see the Yeti move as well . It’s not the only coaster that had a feature disabled unfortunately. The cave incline on Big Thunder Mountain which featured a “cave in” effect also had large moving boulders which are now disabled and all that remains is the rumbling sound being played over the sound system inside the cave. Knowing how these things have changed during my years of going to the parks, I find myself much more focused on every aspect of the ride and trying to appreciate them more as you never know when the day may come when they are lost. Feels bad man!

My memory may be incorrect here, but didn't Joe Rohde or someone say that's precisely what they are going to do? It would make sense. That would be the perfect time to shut the ride down and fix that frickin' Yeti since "Pandora: The World of Avatar" will be the single most popular part of Animal Kingdom for a long time to come. Come on Disney! Fix the yeti!

I remember the whole poachers thing on the safari. The first time I ever went to Disneyland we went on it, and I remember I kept asking “Are the poachers real?” And getting scared. We went for the third time about a month ago, and there was no mention of poachers, the woman driving just said “Oh, looks like we’re gonna have to take a turn, as our normal route is blocked off.” It was supposed to scare us, but that can’t replace the poaching thing.

What's everyone's obsession with correcting people? We all know what they meant. For the sake of their conversation starter you don't need to correct them. To your topic, when I worked at dak they had lil red outside of pride rock cafe back stage. Anyone who is still there know if it's still back there?
@smumdax
@smumdax 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's beautifully important to use the correct terms, because it's important to understand each other, and also important for those who don't know this stuff. Imagine some kid, reading through, seeing DL instead of WDW, and then going to school, repeating that info, and being made fun of... nothing wrong with correcting the facts (politely), even more so in these distorted facts times we live in.

I work at Kilimanjaro Safari and most of the drivers are sad they abandoned the poaching storyline. in the area near the rhinos there is still a set piece that we like to mention because KSR drivers are still there to spread a message of conservation, and the biggest threat to rhinos is still poaching. there are rumors that another guest complaint was that the plot took away animal photography opportunities, the main point of the ride. I joined the ride after the change, so I don't really have an opinion, however, its frustrating that this was taken due to being "too violent" THE POINT WAS TO MAKE PEOPLE UNCOMFORTABLE. the point was to teach people that innocent animals are dying every single day. and to this day drivers continue to remind guests that animals may go extinct soon due to poaching.

Elephants are slow breeders. You'd have to farm elephants specifically for hunting and build up breeding stock or get people on a waiting list to shoot one. And then it would be canned hunting. That doesn't take skill, just a decent shot in a small area. Frankly, I find trophy hunting disgusting. You hunt it, you eat it/use its fur. Two tusks or a wasted carcass that going to get stuffed and given glass eyes is hardly a justification for killing a huge animal like that.
@prismstudios001

The legitimately killed elephants (by the park wardens,not ivory hunters) are used as a source of meat. The elephants are butchered,and the animal is used to feed hungry people. The ivory is not used,but destroyed.

I worked in many projects in Africa and saw the poaching issue in real life. It is awful and frequent so I am really upset that parents complained against the poaching storyline when this is absolutely related wirh the reality of wildlife and what a better way to teach the kids about this awful issue than a ride at a Disney park with such a good storyline to explain your kids about this problem.

I remember seeing the original Yeti during Passholder previews for Everest the weekend before it opened. I definitely remember it being scary and the next time I went to Animal Kingdom (a few years later, since it's my least visited park) I remember thinking "Huh. I feel like that Yeti was a LOT scarier last time." but I didn't really pick up on why. I thought maybe it was because I was 12 when I saw the original, so it was just scarier back then. I didn't even know about the issues until I started working there. I also definitely remember Lil Red and the poachers. Not sure about the Big Red carcass though. I might've seen it.

He moved when my family & I rode that ride in 2009, not too long after it had been built and the yeti reached out like he was going to grab the train cart and I closed my eyes when I saw him do that so he couldn’t get me! There is one effect that Disney tried to perfect for years before finally getting it to work properly. In the current iteration of Pirates at Disneyland, there is a waterfall that Davey Jones appears in. This effect has very old roots. There is a semi-successful iteration in the Temple of the Forbidden Eye involving rats but it only has a 1/3 chance of appearing correctly in my experience. That is not the oldest attempt, however. The effect was originally tried out in the 1983 New Fantasyland update. At the end of Peter Pan Flight, the ships would fly through a waterfall. Unfortunately, the frequency of the ships passing through the mist screen created turbulence that prevented the screen from fully forming and the effect was removed. The turbulence problem resurfaced in the Temple as well, thus the reason that the transport vehicle "stalls" just before the rats drop. This is to give a chance for the turbulence to die down and the screen to reform, This is moderately successful as sometimes the screen reforms and the edges can be seen swirling. The final successful attempt is in Pirates of the Caribbean where the slow motion of the boats does not create any turbulence, allowing the mist screen to function 100% of the time.

don't forget the collapsing spike ceiling in the queue line, the wall of mirrors that used to move forward to "protect" you for Mara's gaze and at on time ALL three doors actually opened. and the boulder at the end of the ride is hit and miss as well. also FIX THE YETI!!!! the list of non-operative animatronics and effects could just go on. it just boils down to up keep and Disney really does lack in these areas. Splash Mountain in Disneyland Ca. ought to be called Dark and Broken Mountain. what a shame.

There's a handful of animatronics not working. The parks are always immaculately clean, the rides rarely break down. Compare that to how huge all the parks are and the millions of people visiting every single day of the year.....I'd say they do a damn good job at upkeep of the park there buddy.

ive never seen the boulder be immobile for any stretch of time, and i can say the indiana jones ride is one i have consistently ridden at every visit to the park, which is with some frequency. they do a great job considering the park is immaculate, and they really can’t risk taking down a huge fan favorite just to attempt to fix one part, it could take years to fix. i’d give them credit, it must be incredibly difficult to run those rides

So Disney had an attraction where an elephant was murdered by poachers, and said poachers then shoot at you, then the poachers get arrested, meanwhile the dead elephant's child is now motherless...that's some heavy stuff. (P.S who thought it was a good idea to make an animatronic part of the entire ride's structure?)

Because to repair it they'd have to get pretty deep into the rock facade that the Yeti was mounted on because that's where a good chunk of the supports and mechanics are. Which would require a fair chunk of closed time for the ride and the ride is one of the most popular ones in it's park. Once there's a new popular attraction to draw crowds away from Expedition Everest they can consider closing it for the required repairs and refurbishing to bring Yeti back.

Also before the Haunted Mansion was officially opened back when there were concepts for it being a ride through, there was a concept for a "ghostly temperature drop" and footsteps in the neverending hallway scene. If you look closely at the walls as you're passing through the speakers are still in the structure. They axed the concept though when the doombuggy concept was implemented because it didn't make sense for the effect to only happen to a select few people going through as the doombuggies run on a constant circuit. There is also the actor dressed in a suit of armor meant to scare patrons which was scrapped not long after being implemented into the mansion. And I have yet to confirm it but there's an odd piece of construction on the exterior of the mansions property and it's said that there was originally supposed to be an underground walk-through catacomb that was scrapped before the mansion opened.

I was part of the crew that worked at The Great Movie ride maby months prior to its debut. Scripts and effects were constantly changing. The Footlight Parade issues were exactly as descibed. In fact, I'd estimate it only worked properly about 10% of the time. The full effect involved each platform layer rotating in alternate directions, fountain effects within it, and bubble effects all over. Honestly, it seemed a very simple effect to be ao unreliable. The Wizard of Oz area was especially problematic because of timing issues: Disney simply could not get permission to use as much time as was needed. The intro was originally the Kansas tornado (which ended up as Fantasia), and the setpiece was originally mord than a half minute longer. The trailer was removed from the cue for the same reason.

Honestly, I haven't been on the ride in years, but I can imagine one possible complaint: The ride barely ever gets updated. Other than the Bride, most of what you see is what came when the ride was finished. Something with technology from last year among old late 60's animatronics might look odd to the wrong person. Other than that, the new Hat Box Ghost is more than welcome to stay.

Lol I had to explain that it was allowed to be pulled because it was a joke. I never knew the spiked would descend if you stepped on the diamonds! I always stepped on them and nothing happened. Definitely yes. I got to go on it very soon after it opened (waited in line for well over 2 hours, lol - totally worth it!) and remember seeing the falling rubble and all of those awesome things in the queue. Man, I wish they would fix some of those effects, especially the ceiling rubble. So awesome.

I remember going on Expedition Everest shortly after it opened and seeing the fully functioning Yeti. It scared me so bad, I actually cried. I went back in May of 2016, and, although I knew what happened to it, I was still disappointed at the change.

Camille Daaé is it weird that I've been on Expedition Everest before and I've NEVER NOTICED the Yeti? I mean, I did ride it after the Yeti was dormant, but I seriously didn't notice it.

I once worked with a member of the DLR maintenance and engineering team and he witnessed the removal of the ice machine from IJA. In it's first summer of operation, all the rides original effects were consistently functioning and that rubble had no joke realism. As you can probably tell from the video (thank you YESTERWORLD ENTERTAINMENT so much for finding that footage!!!) , the ice was lit from above with an orange stage light, causing the rubble to appear like chunky, liquid magma.

I went to Disneyland when I was 5 years old in 1967. I distinctly remember the original Tiki Hut with the Barker birds and original demi gods. That attraction, The Pirates of the Caribbean and the Small World ride were my all time favorites.

I saw Disneyland practically from opening day to probably late 70's and could see how some of the rides were deteriorating. I remember seeing the elephants many times. Not in person though... A few years back I worked at a video production office. We filmed weddings, made commercials, training videos etc. and also transferred old film or photos to video or DVD. Yup...VHS was still a thing. I think everybody who ever took a super 8 camera to Disneyland shot almost the exact same footage. I probably could have mixed some up and nobody would ever know. It took some monumental patience to get some of the footage from old rotten film. Some was like brand new, well preserved...some was kept in shoe boxes in musty old attics or basements. There was lots of blackness where people would try to film the indoor rides, sometimes I could bring out more detail playing with the levels, brightness, contrast, we tried to get every little bit even if it was just a few seconds from a roll. It might be the only images someone has of a dead loved one.. But I also saw unpublished amateur war footage from WW2, Korea, VietNam. it wasn't always birthday parties and vacations.

Disney Imagineer Terri Hardin and I visited Shanghai Disneyland in July 2017. She wanted to take the park in and deeply appreciate the Imagineers' work. She told me to go to new attractions immediately because you get to see everything the Imagineer's intended for the attraction working entirely. Past the first year, she told me, and it's anyone's guess what you'll get.

I remember seeing the rubble falling on the Indiana Jones ride, but I rode it in the early months. Honestly, the scene is impressive without it. The musical queues, the fire, the feeling of the whole ride. Love it. I also remember the spikes in the queue and being an obnoxious teenager, hitting the bamboo pole(which also worked to make it move if I remember correctly) as I was leaving to make the spikes fall down on the people behind me when the line was going fast. x3

I saw the falling debris on opening week! Believe it or not, it fell in the room when you looked into Maras eyes as well. Brown rocks would fall and smash. Obviously some colored ice that would melt and be recycled. I've been claiming this forever, and this is the first video I've seen about it.

I can verify with 100% that my Mother when riding the Haunted Mansion on a 'Soft Opening' that she spotted the Hatbox Ghost. It wasn't as the publisher of this video said that is was in 'Cast Member viewings' that they deemed the effect a failure.

I remember the Animal Kingdom Safari ride with the poachers during a visit in '09. I thought it was pretty cool, and had a real world message for people. The jeep chase, the rocking bridge, and the animatronic baby elephant at the end was all integrated very well. What made it cooler, was our driver had an acting voice that sounded like Shaggy from Scooby Doo! During our last visit in '15, we went on the ride again, and it just wasn't the same... it felt like we were just driving through a zoo.

As a film lover I'm sad not only by the Footlight Parade segment never working in my lifetime, but also the tear down of the Great Movie Ride entirely. Most people didn't appreciate it, but it was one of my favorite rides. I'm not surprised by the complaints regarding Big Red, there's leaving an impact on kids on the dangers of poaching, but then there's ruining a family's whole day by having the kids cry over the dead elephant. Disney is expensive people, parents just want to take their kids their to have fun. I wish they'd kept the second iteration that kept the poachers but omitted the corpse, but oh well.
