Where Do These Old Honda Accords Keep Coming From ?

My wife and I bought that exact car (without the stripes) in 1980 and it was one of the best, most reliable cars of the era. And it was certainly quick,, great in snow and sand, hiway speed was good enough but don’t forget we were in that stupid 55 and stay alive speed restriction time. In dense winter air on hiway we reached 40 mpg and did all service ourselves. Axel boots and brakes were common repairs and even replaced a clutch in less than an hour. You just unbolt the block from the transaxle on the sideways engine, twist it a bit and slide in the clutch plate. I wish we kept it and stored it away. But today, I would love to find a Honda Civic just as a toy. Great video....thank you for the memories.

We had two 1978 Accords as our first cars back in the day. One red, One blue. This 1979 has the correct steel wheels with 4 holes in them. The earlier years had a bunch of holes as the narrator said. These came in the bas model (like this one) or the LX. The LX add A/C as standard and had velour seating surfaces as opposed to the "corduroy" center surfaces this one has. I've never seen an Accord of this vintage with a ceiling console. 1979 was the first year of the four-door sedan if I remember correctly. With an aftermarket cruise control, I regularly got 45 to 55 MPG on trips. Our '78s burned oil big time. Start them up cold and a big blue cloud would form. I was told it was bad valve guides but I never knew for sure. I have fond memories of these cars and they started me onto a life of Hondas.

Sean Watts 25 years ago from the classic hot rod scene. The fiberglass pro built chrome everything trailer queens wouldn’t allow real American steel into their car shows . So the og rusty hot rods started their own car shows. That wouldn’t allow electric gaged billet parts hot rods in. The og rat rod shows became way more popular so the fiberglass hot rods started painting fake rust on their cars. Example, if you when to and Air museum which fighter plane would you appreciate more? The totally shiny never seen a dog fight war bird or the bullet holed ridden paint burned from exhaust fighter? That’s patina . But I get it now, the hipsters are ruining it.

I bought a 5 speed Accord hatch new in 81. It was brown metallic with the beige interior. It was very reliable and delivered good fuel mileage. It was very fun to drive. Like many Honda’s it started to rust even though I had it under coated.

This car really needs to be restored. Why do people fall for this narrative that they love patina when it just makes the car look old and rotted. My father owned a 1978 Honda Accord Hatchback with the 5 speed transmission which I remember fondly. The 1979 Accords got different taillight lenses and had front inner fenders for better rust protection. If I owned this car I would spend the money and put it back to stock.

I disagree with you there. The best cars Honda ever made were in the late 80s though the mid 90s and during that era a majority of the cars were produced out of country. I'll take a Canadian 92-95 civic over just about anything.

Walter Christen I bought the exact car New and had air added by the dealer which is how they did it then. Drove it for my sales job. Have had several Hondas since (Currently a 2017 Civic coupe manual) and have never been disappointed.

Mine was 1. Accord 1981, japanese dark red, sedan, speed 1.6, and coupe accord, red colour, 3 doors, no a/c, both. Great running, and third Toyota Camry -Carina, wagon, 1.6, 4 speed, was durability, but all three was ''patina'' corosion eating very fast. Engine's was great and quality, but steel metal was joke in the term long use.

I had a mint green Accord. It was a 1983. Sadly, the manual transmissions were junk then. They were prone to failure. I noticed it sitting across from where I worked. It was never driven in the 3 years I saw it so one day I asked the people what the deal was with the car. It was owned by a couple living in Europe that drove it when they came to our town. I was able to buy it for $300. I didn't know at the time the transmission had issues. I fixed its problems in clouding bad tires and rusting brakes. I drove it for a year before it started slipping out of gear. Eventually, it lost its gears one by one. I finally drove it to the junk yard. It was not rusty or rotted out eather. I loved that car.

Love your VIDS man. I had a '79 Accord too back in the early 80's maybe '81, I had a silver one with 5 speed, A/C and cruise add on. I drove that thing all over the USA, drove from Northern Virginia to San Diego, CA in two days and all up the coast to San Francisco, then over to Las Vegas, stopping at all the tourist things along the way, took two weeks, man I had a blast in that little car. I also had a 1/2 ounce of pot with me and caught a buzz the whole trip, man I had fun!

This brings back memories. My dad bought a 1980 or 1981 model and we thought it was so space age with the air condition and the five speed and the gadgets like the coin holder and the console on the top but mostly the silver metallic color. It was a four door sedan with the 1.6L engine running on leaded (we didn't start using unleaded before 1990 in this part of the world). The clock face had a display of rolling numbers much like an old alarm clock. My dad loved the torque from low rpm and he would pretty much drive it on top gear all day long! Amazingly I still have the memory of that car's smell when brand new. Thanks for the memories.

My sister had the sedan back in 80'. I loved taking it thru the canyon twisties. IMO, it was one of the great "slow cars to drive fast. That engine noise had that soft throatiness. I always wished that car was mine. Nice video!

I believe that carpet isn’t original to the car and the air conditioning was obviously added by the dealer as evidenced by the stick-on label on the control panel. Only the LX came with factory air.

All A/C was dealer installed in Hondas back then. We had a 79 4 door. I thought ours had a little button that would light up green when turning on the A/C. I still have the owners manual from it I'll have to look.

My first one was an 81 same color but a sedan. I loved that thing. The alternator wire would eventually burn off and id just have to splice a new one on and keep going. My "patina" was the rear fender Wells. Bondo and paint every year. That thing would not quit.

We had this EXACT car and color but a 1980 which was identical but the better wheels. Great great car. Handled incredible, quick, a dream to drive and got 35 mpg. Wish we still had it. 5spd with air too.

We had two, one was a 1979 and the next was an 81. One was this color, sans the stripe and the upper door protection rubber strip. It had a/c and the stock radio and speakers. The door speakers were behind perforated vinyl grills that made them nearly invisible. The stock radio was inset level with the ashtray. Oh yes, the second one was metallic green.

Had an '84 Civic Hatchback 5 spd. Ran like a bat outta hell. 4 adults in the car, full picnic coolers, grill, and she'd still cruise at 65, 70, just humming along. The front wheel drive kept it tracking straight in icy, slushy conditions on NYC highways in winter too. She got towed one day for not paying tickets. I didn't have the money at the time to get it back. ☹

True, but I suspect it it spent most of its years out here on the west coast where cars generally don't rust like they do in the rust belt (unless you live on the actual coast), not too uncommon to see cars over 25-30 years old still plying the roads even now.

Bought one in the late 80s for 200 bucks. was missing a starter bolt. Sourced a bolt, and it started right up. The car might have saved my life. Recently divorced, foreclosed, with numerous life changes. The CVCC and its amazing gas mileage, and the strangely fun to drive character, diverted many losses in the forefront. Its 2 speed Honda matic was oddly luxurious. Aside from the body/frame rust mine had, I really wish I still had it, in all its simplicity. If you get a chance to own one, be sure to replace the timing belt well within the service life. Its an easy job, but ramifications of not catching its imminent failure are tragic.

My dad had an old 79, I seen him sitting in his first brand new car, he was 21 years old. He had that car when he was stationed in Florida, he said if the windows were not mirrored tinted the AC wasn't worth a damn because of all the window space on the car. He said it got great gas mileage and he drove it all over the country in the 3 years that he owned it, he wrecked it rear ending the car in front of him when that car made a sudden stop on the highway, he said he was the last car in a 6 car pile up, he walked away without a scratch, to bad he couldn't say the same thing about the car.

This Accord is smaller than a current model Civic. Four years ago I saw a '77 or '78 Accord at a local Honda dealership. The car was in mint condition and wasn't for sale. It was in the showroom as a conversation piece.

Man! No Honda looked this nice since 1984 or so where I live... They were great cars, but I swear you could HEAR them rust in the Midwest... I had an 81 Prelude (in 1989) that was so rusty, the front bumper fell off it while I was driving... Every panel had fist-sized holes in it and the floor was so rusty my feet got wet whenever it rained or snowed. It always started even if it was -20f, it consistently got 30-35mpg and was really fun to drive, but man, it was rusty...

What was cool too about these cars at the time was that they were some of the last ones that could still run on regular leaded gas which was cheaper to buy and available too....fuel at the time was really jumping in price at the time.

Neat old Accord. Happy to see it still on the road. Those are stock 79 wheels. If it has a webber it is no longer functionally a CVCC. Digital clock came on the LX. The base model had the analogue clock. And you can see another one in my garage.

I'll warrant the reason this Honda is still on its tires is that it was kept in Oregon most of its life. My 1997 Lexus is starting to rust out, and I brought it from Minnesota a couple years ago. Truly, I remember when early 1980s Honda Civics and Accords were almost ubiquitous in Minneapolis-St Paul, but then they all rusted around the wheel wells, and then went to the junkyard. Here in California, I sometimes see those cars looking pretty with the original paint.

Western Oregon climate is really good to cars. Rarely very hot or cold, and the sun is almost always filtered through clouds, cutting down on the UV. The roads are relatively decent, too. If you can keep it dry, it will age very slowly compared to other places.
