I was the 100th 'like' on tbis video. Got a handle on your rating system now provided by your breakdown of the points. The sharpness testing is good as we all want a knife to arrive sharp enough to be useful. I have had a number of knives that needed to be sharpened right out of the box. Mostly a couple of decades ago. Still, inquiring minds etc.

I like the way youre testing sharpness. My only question is , how would the fishing line compare to whatever filliment bess is using. It would be interesting to see the test done with the bess filliment for comparison. I definitely think pulling is more accurate than using the levearage that is applied in the bess tester

@Ingeb91

The problem the bess has is that it only tests push cut sharpness, which, most of the time, we don't cut like that. So this pulling method seems better to me.
@Trolldaddy5
@Trolldaddy5 13 күн бұрын
@Ingeb91 it's still push cutting though, bc the wire isn't sliding on the blade.
@Edcreviewer
@Edcreviewer 5 күн бұрын
Yeah either testing method is testing only push cut no matter if it's bess or his method and it kinda has to be. It's all relative though... As, someone with a bess tester and whom fishes I can say there is definitely a difference between the bess filament and mono fishing line and I would assume that the bess wire is more consistent in diameter than mono, now high quality flurocarbon from Japan I have messured and it's diameter is extremely consistent but your typical mono filament fishing lines aren't very consistent however with that said in a test like this the slight variations in Dia of 4lb test isn't gonna show its self to a meaningful value with a highly accurate scale and tons of cuts sampled yeah you may see a variation of a few % but that would be under very strict testing protocols and wouldn't give any real world data that's of use. The testing he is doing is showing consist enough numbers to show that the methodology is a sound metirc and giving usable relative data.

Love your quantifiable testing @CuttingBoardRx. Keep it up! I do have one comment for your consideration : You talk about the edge bevel width comparison on each side of the blade and then directly correlate this to an accurate and even edge angle. Remember that this only applies if the edge is actually perfectly centered. As an example, imagine the grind on a chisel, or even a Japanese grind. You can, for example have a 15 degree edge with a huge bevel on one side, and then you can quickly create another 15 degree bevel on the other side but in this example the edge is not centered and aligned on the the blade - it is offset to one side of the cutting centerline and shows up as one huge bevel and one tiny bevel, both being 15 degrees of so preferred. You can also then go ahead and remove a lot of steel with (for example) a 10 degree angle on the small side and stop when the edge bevel is the same size on both sides, but the edge will be misaligned and not centered with the blade - even though it would visually look the same size on both sides. The second point to be considered is the fact that a knife might not have proper distal taper grind, causing the edge at the tip to possibly be wider or in some cases narrower than the rest of the blade - even though the angle might possibly be the same. Lastly, I have a question - what gel are you using on your Leeb tester between the block and the blade? It obviously gives you very accurate results.👌🏻

I have to wonder based off of ur sharpness test compared with the hrc findings what’s going on there as any 14c I’ve ever used that was what I would consider soft under preformed greatly on edge retention but once it’s in the upper percent of its hrc range or what I would consider hard ( I am going off of me using the steel as I don’t have a machine to test the hrc) it’s edge retention goes up drastically. Aeb-l and other similar fine carbide razor steels. 14c28n is pretty much the best non-powder-metallurgy stainless steel there is. It is extremely tough, has very fine carbides and can be sharpened to a razor edge. All while being quite stainless. The only area where it lacks (mostly compared to supersteels) is abrasion resistance. Still better than your simple high carbon steels though.

Then you use the example that if it is supposed to be 62 HRC , the range is 61.5 to63.5. Im sure you intended to say the low number would be 60.5. Anyway, no criticism, just wanted you to know. I don't understand why these companies can't Rockwell test their blades. Saying a blade is a certain hardness without proof is just lying. These knives are very cheap to make in bulk. I don't understand people that get mad when a company is called out. They get mad at the guy showing they lie not the company that conned them. KZbin really mystifies me.
