Ubisoft's decision to remove all online elements is so incomprehensibly stupid. For PC, they're literally tearing away things that people have earned while playing and removing content that people paid for. That can't be legal. Therefore, Spiff revealing this exploit is morally proper as Ubisoft absolutely deserves everything that happens to it.
@LordMoku2 жыл бұрын
Actually, when you unavoidably sign a game's ToS when you first play it, especially for EA and Ubi games, you are agreeing to RENT the game, not buy it, meaning that they can remove complete functionality if they choose to, and you have no recourse. So as shitty as it is, it IS 100% "legal".
@iurigrang2 жыл бұрын
Keeping online functionality costs money and servers. There's no way you could actually make it illegal, otherwise you'd be forcing them to have an eternal expense every game they release.

@@iurigrang It's Ubisoft, I think they can afford the eternal expense.
@bradleycalkins3942 жыл бұрын
It may not be stupid, it could also be planned obsolescence. Every new game must compete not only with every other new game, but also with every old game, both the ones you own and the one's you can acquire. For many, they can do nothing about it, but by adding online requirements to new games they can prevent today's games from competing with tomorrow's. I should note, for legal reasons, that this is only a hypothetical strategy, and not something I can prove. Always online requirements can be used for this, even if only for certain features, but I have no proof that anyone is actually using it for this purpose, only that there is a potential motive.
@h13n122 жыл бұрын
it actually is legal since if you read most game company's ToS you don't actually own the game, you just own the right to play that game which means they can actually remove most of the game's content without any legal trouble

they want people to buy their new games is all... so they actively work on making old unplayable. Same with software, at some point Windows XP and then Windows 7, became "unplayable" for stuff, except in case of OS it IS justified, not so much in gaming where each game is standalone experience and doesn't need to have tons of stuff rely on it (Microsoft also have tons of useless and outdated stuff in system to ensure backwards compatibility so I guess I picked bad example)... Let us not forget that neither Ubisoft nor Electronic Arts made these games. They were just the publishers; the middle men that carved the industry in such a way as to make them seem irreplaceable, but in truth they do none of the work it takes to make the games published in their names, if anything they actively make said games worse by forcing developers to shoehorn in bad practices and awful game mechanics because someone with a suit and a PowerPoint presentation told them it'd make them more money. They don't release the server software because of contrived reasons that aren't actually true if you look more into it. A few years back, someone made a great video essay about publishers shutting down servers for games that are impossible to play without them, and the effort some people go to to rebuild the software from the heavily encrypted (oftentimes military grade) fragments of what remains; but sadly I can't for the life of me remember who it was and what it was called. I feel like it might've been James Stephanie Sterling, but it might also just have been a Jimquisition on the subject that pointed to the essay as a useful resource.

It is FREE TO LIST! There is no physical inventory! There is no maintenance! There's nothing to lose except opportunity cost from people who, if they're stealing, probably would NEVER have even CONSIDERED buying the game. They only showed interest because it cost them nothing. They're just shooting themselves in the foot in order to keep freeloaders and their customers alike.

Actually, I am pretty sure each refund of the game Steam would attempt to invoice the developers 30% of the cost of the game, and since it was refunded for free and no money was given, Capcom are essentially paying Steam 30% the cost of Flock even though no purchase was made (and this is likely automated).. Of course this would all be sorted out and no money paid as it is Steams fault this exists in the first place, so the easiest solution for them at the moment is just to remove it from sale to stop it from happening.

Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!

Hmm unfortunately looks like ubisoft already messed with this. Got brotherhood and revelations on uplay. Then took a few days before steam finally refunded but now a week or two later checking my uplay and the games are now missing. As if I never had them in the first place. Which stinks was looking forward to playing through some of the assassin creed games again from the beginning. Though the first game couldn't get a key for. I already had assassins creed 2 from a giveaway a long time ago on uplay but im not gonna spend money on brotherhood and revelations when I already own them for PS3.

a pirate was never a customer to begin with. it really doesnt matter if some people take advantage of no drm to get the product for free, they never intended on paying. Drm really only hurts legitimate customers.
@matheusjahnke86432 жыл бұрын
That is, of course, assuming you finance them. Have you ever heard of a pirate suffering from DRM? They get the game, "crack" it, modifying so it executes even when the player didn't obtain it legitimately, then share it around. Note that DRM might make the cracking slower, which might be useful(or not, I won't enter on the discussion) to make the sales before the pirates can crack it and share a... *free* version.
@I.____.....__...__2 жыл бұрын
You forgot that Ubisoft pulling the servers also affects NON-online single-player games that use online DRM, like _Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands_ which doesn't contain some of the code on the disc; it does an online DRM check on startup and downloads the missing code from the servers. If the servers aren't available, it can't do the online check, and thus, that missing code (eg the code to open some doors when you step on some switch-plates), won't exist and the game will be broken. 😒

To me it looks like the issue is with the third party launchers rather than with valve/steam. The status of the key is not being tracked between the two services. When a game is refunded the key should be marked as refunded/void/revoked/expired in steam's database. When the steam key is entered into a third party launcher it should then query with steam if that key is still valid and if not then fail with the response returned by steam. It looks like steamworks might not have a secure web API for this, instead relying on manual lookup, such as for customer service or tech support personal. As such it is unlikely that valve intends developers to even authenticate their products in this way. Instead it seems that what should happen is a user shows up with a steam key and is redirected to steam to insert the key (the exploit would be fixed here). The user's steam account is then linked to the third party launcher's account so the third party knows their steam UID. The third party then queries all their steam products and exposes any that return with valid licences as available to the user in their third party client.
@obzai2 жыл бұрын
Everything after your first sentence is unnecessary. Scrap third party launchers outright and let us just play our games launched from Steam like the old days. I go off-grid for long periods and third party launchers constantly misfire on authentication attempts in the absence of a reliable net connection preventing me from playing games I paid for. Scrap them and let Steam handle it, it works better.
@Jillas6662 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware it isn't a real exploit, because like you said, after you refunded the game on Steam, your key will be marked as void and it will also remove the game from a third party launcher, and I believe it is an automated process, there's just a few days lag before that information gets to the third party, but it will happen no matter what, so it's a very lame exploit that only allows you to play a refunded game for a couple of days more...

@@BluntsNBeatz Steam should still keep them in sync though. There is a website that developers who own an application can validate keys for that application to see their standing with steam. Such keys should flag as refunded/expired/revoked. However it is possible the key format has changed over time, especially as steam grew and the original key format might not support enough unique keys. I suspect that might be where the previous exploit came from as such an old game/product using an old, deprecated, key was having the key regenerated every time it was attached as a work around. With this exploit these old games also used shorter keys and the third party is forced to accept them with minimal validation so that old copies of the game still function correctly if obtained from physical retail. It is also possible that there is some strange agreement that the third party generates the keys, which might explain why the refund data is not kept in sync.

@bruhtholemew2 жыл бұрын
Keys for most modern games are deactivated once you refund them. For example, if you buy a game on humble bundle and then refund it, a day later Steam will tell you your game was removed. This exploit only really works with older games that'd show you the key when you started the game, but newer games don't do that anymore. Spiff did this same exploit to EA games a long time ago, and EA's response was to remove the key pop-up for their old games.

Hi about that DRM free exploit, please don't exploit it. Having games just use Steam DRM is ideal but DRM free games are even better, so that you don't get situations like what happened with Xbox live going down or PS3 titles 'expiring' or some other doomsday situation. Exploiting this just gives developers excuses to add more DRMs on top that will probably break and leave the game unusable in the future.

It suprises me that this is still a doable exploit. Like in theory all steam would need to do is have some call to the third party launchers to see if the key has been redeemed or not, and if it has, then not give the refund on steam, but I guess that would be too much work lol

It would require enforcing a standard communication channel between Steam and every launcher, as well as those third parties willingly sharing such data with someone they are trying to compete with.
