gotta address these things, probably : 1. there are seven seasons of skins but i say there's six here because i keep forgetting that the fire/pure/airbender season exists, my bad 2. at one point in the video, i say chris' mom leaves him a thousand /dollars/ but, in my defense, it was a little slip up because the next time i refer to the same scene, i do say 'pounds.' don't take me to the guillotine just yet. 3. when i say the office u.s. and shameless u.s. improved upon elements of the original versions, what i mean is that those remakes ADDED to their takes on the shows instead of just being flat remakes with no -- how do you say -- *flavor*. anyway just so it's clear i do like both uk and u.s. versions of those shows . i felt i had to make that clear since i noticed a few people's feelings were hurt because they thought i hated the u.k versions. my bad um...so yeah

Part of the reason is because they weren't afraid to say that sex, drugs and alcohol can actually be fun. Shows like 13 reasons why present them as things that only unhappy teenagers partake in which isn't the case at all. Of course they can lead to very serious issues but they don't always, and by saying this, they aren't glorifying them, they're just improving the programme's realism.

Yes, i was around age 25 when I first watched it on BBC America and I thought back to some of the teen shows I watched as a pre-teen/early teens (I didn't have the WB until I was 18) and Skins seemed to be less moralistic and not as black and white in their thinking. But the more I watch of current tv shows in this new decade, I"ve noticed there's more of a grey area in morality than in the 1990s. Or at the very least some American shows I watch show the PC morality of today. For example, you can't compare the black-ish/grown-ish/mixed-ish franchise to Saved By the Bell from the early 90s :D

Maxxie was never developed fully and was stereotypical. I am a gay FTM and Franky in Series 5 was more relatable to me. Tea doesn't end up with Tony, she was deeply confused at the time and is even called out for going out with him. It's also possible for gay people to date others of the opposite sex for a while. This happens a lot. I've been attracted to girls before, even though I prefer males.

This wasnt the main focus of the video, but it did catch my attention because I never knew about it before, But I disagree about Cassie being a character that romanticises mental health. I personally saw her whimsicalness and fairylike beahviour as her being insane and not coping. Almost everyone around her in the show acknowledged that something was wrong with her and alot of times she was a character of messed up morals (especially in the second season). I dont know, maybe its because when I think romanticising mental health I think more about the shit show that is 13 reasons why.

@@caras1366 Cassie’s parents were middle class trying to live and be penniless “artist hippies”. They live in a nice house and have middle class accents but are trying to live this weird “artist boho commune” thing which makes them neglectful, so that shows when they have sex in front of their kids, her mum’s fully painted in the nude by her dad (with wide open legs lol) and the house is a mess because they thought it was “free” and “bohemian” but was actually very neglectful and bordering on child abuse. In Skins Pure, after Cassie’s dad has a breakdown and Cassie has to end up looking after her little brother, you can tell her dad wasn’t really like that at all, and was actually a weak man, who actually didn’t know how to care for his kids, so the fake boho lifestyle was an avoidance thing and coping mechanism, I think. Skins Pure actually builds on Cassie’s dad’s character really well and adds a lot of depth. I don’t think we actually ever see Anwar’s parents, come to think of it?

I think the problem with remakes is that British shows tend to have very specific British humour . Some of which is even regional. So it is very hard to remake unless you have trying to replace it with American humour. For example to accent, some posh kids actually speak like that in UK, which I suspect is contrary to popular US belief.

Apparently there was a lot of controversy around the remake due to the ages. There are differences to note here in the UK that might change the feel of the overall show. Here in the UK school technically ends at 16, for a while you had the choice at 16 to go straight into work, start an apprenticeship or you can continue your studies (which is currently what most people do). If you continue your studies you spend two years at a place we call college or sixth form. Officially they are known as Sixth Form Colleges and there you study 4-6 subjects of your choice which are supposed to narrow your decision on what to study at a University College, where you study for an honours degree. Skins was set at one of these colleges, so most of the characters are between the ages of 16-18, but as far as they are concerned they are no longer at school, they have more freedom than they would at a school, they would refer to their teachers by their first names rather than calling them 'sir' or 'miss' like you would at school. Therefore sixth form college is effectively not unlike college in North America in that young people feel they can let their hair down and enjoy life more. Also, and I think this is worth mentioning given the nature of Skins, whilst alchohol is illegal in the UK until the age of 18, the age of consent is officially 16. So when the characters in Skins are having sex, many are doing so for the first time, and it's not considered 'wrong' because as far as they are concerned they have reached the age of consent. This has an effect on the sense of 'freedom' the characters have that those in the North American version wouldn't. In the NA version they are still at school, they still have the same social circles, the same restrictions (except that they can drive) they can't reinvent themselves the way we can in the UK at a Sixth Form college, it's a different experience overall.

I think they thought they were doing a good Maxxie counterpart with Tea. They're both very attractive, and people of different genders wanted to be with them. But they actually showed *why* Maxxie was appealing - yeah he's handsome and a flirt, but he's also caring and loyal and a very good friend. Tea, well the show seemed to be saying 'she's a hottie lesbian who is also down with sleeping with men, what else ya need? Certainly not a respectably-written character!'

Tea was deeply confused and bored at the time. It's also possible for gays to go out with someone of the opposite gender. I'm a gay FTM and I've kissed girls. She was much more nuanced and likeable. Maxxie was never fully developed and was a stereotype (he dressed camp once in a while and liked musicals and dance). Rewatching both shows 10+ years later, I find Skins US more realistic. Certain characters are better and there's a bigger sense of friendship.

Cadie was much more realistic and relatable to me, as Cadie was mixed race and abused prescription drugs, as I did. I now see Cassie with different eyes. She was a "manic pixie dream girl" who could act selfish and hurtful. In some ways I relate, but she was unnecessarily cruel at times. I have mental illnesses and struggle with food, too, but I try not to hurt others even if unintentionally.

@@t.castro4493 Cassie I feel was someone who acted selfish and hurtful for sure, for example leaving after Chris' death instead of staying and coping, but that was caused by how blatantly her family and friends ignored her and her clear cries for help. I think she was portrayed in a way where she was representing having mental illnesses and struggling with food, ect but having no one give a single fuck when they all knew what was happening. You see how little they cared about her in season 1 when Michelle and tony are talking about her with Sid. She represented a way that people respond to having mental illnesses and struggling but not having those closest to them try to help them. She was selfish and came off as hurtful and unnecessarily cruel at times from the way she was trying to be the one that cared about her, her subconscious trying to protect her and care about her. This subconscious need to protect herself and care about herself shown through how in her episode she keeps getting signs to eat. Cassie and Cadie were meant to portray the same character in a way but also not, they were aimed at different audiences, they both had different reactions to how those around them were. Cassie like Cadie abused prescription drugs and also other drugs. No one tries to hurt others intentionally or even unintentionally when struggling with mental illness but mental illnesses themselves can cause people to start only thinking about themselves. Her portrayal of her struggle did reflect what many with mental illnesses do as well as the automatic subconscious or fight or flight response that out bodies have. Cassies flight or flight response being to run away, which came off as selfish and hurtful. They both portray the differences in people who are struggling the same way but reacting to it differently. The other thing to remember is that the other characters in the show with Cassie knew all about her issues, they were all friends and a group and knew each other for a long time clearly however they never cared enough to show cassie they cared about her, she was so happy when she thought sid was giving her signs to eat. She was unnecessarily cruel at times but she was like that because she felt let down by the others.

@@reechaaryal8094 Interesting analysis. I do understand what you say, and I relate to "running away" because I think that I don't deserve to have friends, and for the past 3 years I'm cutting off contact with others. I suppose that what you say can hold true, as I've hurt people without meaning to, and one of those times I wanted the best for me and for my friend (we were going through a rough patch and to this day we aren't speaking, but I tried to make amends). And yes, Cassie did also abuse drugs, but Cadie seemed to depend on them more. My complaint about Cassie acting selfish isn't only aimed at her character, because pretty much everyone in the series is like that, and it's one of my frustrations with the show nowadays. When I first watched Skins back in 2010, I was only 13, and thought that it was perfect, but everything has pros and cons. As I said before here on KZbin, the US version makes more sense to me these days, because the characters are kinder to each other and act like genuine friends, and the situations seem more grounded in reality, in contrast to some things that happened in Skins UK. Skins US features a bit less hedonism too. I'm one of those people who feels lonelier after watching the show.

As an Australian I feel the UK version does portray how we are in friendships and how we talk amongst ourselves, it seems rude but is all loving. @@reechaaryal8094 Hmm, IMO, there was a bigger sense of unity in Series 5 (things went down the gutter in Series 6). Although, some fans have said the opposite; that the third generation characters weren't really close. I identified a lot with them in S5, but there was a change in writing staff and they modified too much. In Gen 1, the biggest problem was Tony as he was a master manipulator and a huge narcissist who caused problems. I suppose a lot of teens are self-centered, heh. In Misfits, the characters also acted like jerks but they cared about each other. As for the US version, you can find it online. I can't mention anything here or YT will censor the comment, but try searching around for "Skins US S01E01". I'd advise watching it with an open mind without comparing with the original... Skins US should have been a separate series with another name. That would have resulted in less criticism. There's an Aussie teen drama that is very much like Skins, it was called SLiDE and unfortunately only had one season. It seems extremely rare and was forgotten by most. I have yet to watch it, but it seems good. Here in Brazil, they aired Aussie shows that were usually meant for kids or younger teens. I watched Mortified. Thanks for the advice, I'll try to come out of this self-imposed isolation, but I become nervous.

Euphoria's success proves that Skins should've been brought to a pay channel, first of all. But that isn't the only reason for Skins failing. I really believe by the time Elsley brought Skins to the US he was completely out of touch with not just youth in general but especially American youth. He and the people he was working worth could not translate the show for American audiences. Also, the talent on Skins UK far exceeded the actors they found for US. Anyway, doesn't matter, because Euphoria is the remake American audiences deserve. It has the talent, money, direction, editing, and production American audiences needed. Because of the budget Skins UK had it does give a more raw aesthetic imo but I'm not sure that would work here, not right now anyway.

I never knew there was an American remake, but seeing this, that girl cannot play Effy, she doesn’t portray effy the way she’s supposed to be. Doing that and studying at Uni it was pretty damn daunting but at the same time Incredibly Exciting, even with long hours on set and burning the candle at both ends to keep up with my course work. I felt comforted that the program I worked on at the time was doing so well and was relatable to so many. I also got to talk with a few cast members occasionaly all lovely people and weirdly enough with out even knowing this prior to working on skins, Cook is related to one of my friends. He's also a nice guy but definately a wild one not all that different from his character Cook to be honest. Can I just say, in Effy's episode, it is somehow so easily able to dive deeper into her character dispite the fact that you barely knew her character before this. That is because it was HER! EPISODE! It actually focused on her with the other characters being, basically, side characters. But even then, you could see the character growth from EVERYONE involved in that episode, especially her. In Eura's episode it wasn't focused on her in the slightest. And even the characters that the episode did focus on, Tony and Stan, didn't have any growth whatsoever.

I loved the British Skins. It reminded me more of my high school experience than any other "teenage" show out there. It was real, it was raw - sex, drugs, crazy parties, depression, pressure from family/friends, eating disorders, etc. People don't want to think their kids are doing or experiencing these things but a lot of them are. They're reaching out for connections and understanding, even if through drugs and partying. I also liked that they didn't always frame the drug use, sex and partying as the issue with these kids. Those things are definitely for fun, and can be a symptom of trying to cover up sadness and other issues, but sometimes it really is just fun. Which is the real reality behind teens growing up. But the partying, etc. isn't always a cry for help. So i really liked how the raw and the dirty was framed in the original Skins - it was REAL.

Skins US was also realistic, and the characters more likeable. They seemed like genuine friends. Almost everybody in Skins UK is a jerk or turns into one (Franky in S6 was one of my biggest disappointments as I connected to her on a deep level in S5). And by the way, not every kid has the lifestyle shown on Skins. I didn't, and I first started watching at 12. After my adolescence ended, I did have certain experiences but they weren't fun, only traumatic. I used drugs to escape reality and barely had positive effects. For many of us, "Inbetweeners" is more reflective of teenagehood.

as an American, I didn't even bother watching Skins US. Skins UK was it for me. 💜

I love that you mention Shameless and The Office. Both shows actually found a way to change to fit American audiences. I actually liked a few of the actors in the remake, so I felt terrible when I hated this.

I love the whole Josh-Effy kidnap scene because of how well it wrapped up. It seems crazy at first, but then you realise he never really wanted Tony to do that to her, he just wanted to make Tony apologise and see him suffer as revenge, which makes sense since he’s off his meds. He’s not crazy enough to make Tony do that, just enough to conduct a plan to screw him up. He gives Effy pure grade pharmaceuticals since he doesn’t really want to hurt her, and he could’ve got them from work so it’s not too unusual. It all seems like it’s gonna be a case of a TV show making something stupid or unrealistic happen for the sake of it, but it turns out to be really well thought out and explained in a way that makes sense, which makes it all fit together.

A HBO-ran American remake of Skins could have actually done pretty well I think. From other shows they’ve done they seem for the most part to know what they’re doing with all types of audiences. They also have the balls to keep a lot of the raunchiness and raw-teenage realism that made the original Skins so special to people of the same age as the characters.

You can’t make a show that’s relatable and represents brittish teen culture and keep it the same and expect it to be real arable for American teens
