@@sobertillnoon TW: sexual assault, sexual harrassment They came in all forms but the uniting characteristic was that they got together and staged parties and other events where they would be predatory towards girls. They would also be the types that would make lists of girls to objectify and slut-shame them. Also, as a more extreme and brazen case, I remember a group of boys that made a "points" system, where they would assign points to each other based on how much of a girl they could grope without consent. I think the scariest part about these groups of boys is that they hid in plain sight. I was "friends" with many of them, and paid the price for that.

Kinda, sorta but no...because the reviews and ratings are all over the place. If it was as you say, why is mean girls loved, praised and reviewed so well and Jawbreakers not. It comes down to the movie, it's time and release and a dozen other factors. Sure there will always be people that will down play or outright hate things that they don't agree with But they are a small minority.

There are so many well received movies that talk about high school and popularity, so I’m confused why a critic for Jawbreakers said that it lacked substance! I really think it’s because people don’t acknowledge the toxicity that girl friendships can have and critics are quick to label it “petty drama”. Most situations involving girls are not taken that seriously, so I’m actually not surprised that the critic responded poorly to the message that Jawbreakers was trying to put out there

If you haven't seen Selah and the Spades, it isn't in the exact same realm as Jawbreaker, Mean Girls or Heathers but it focuses on a black girl who is the HBIC at her private boarding school. It was a cool movie that is being turned into a series and was written and directed by a black woman.

There's another movie that fits right in with this genre: High School Hellcats (1958). In it, the popular girl clique are the Hellcats and they are domineering and vitriolic. What I think is interesting about it is that a core point of the film is what you spoke about: how the inner workings of these cliques can make the girls act incredibly mean towards each other. In High School Hellcats, this dynamic functions as the reasoning for their downfall - they stomp on everyone else, and then move on to stomping on each other, causing the clique to fall apart.

Think a lot of the issue is that Hollywood has spent much of the past decade doing far less subversive films that cater to specific demographics and can become classics in their own niche and more so on releasing films that just cater to as many people as possible, hence the over-saturation of superhero movies and remakes/sequels. Somebody said that "now Hollywood just makes movies for 16-year-olds and China," which is becoming increasingly true. And with the pandemic shutting down theaters all over the world, I don't have much hope for more subversive movies coming out now that film studios are going to focus on recouping their losses amidst the pandemic rather than taking risks that might alienate potential audience members

I don't really remember my school having like hard cliques. Like people with similar interests would hang out but it was rarely like people exclusively hanging out with one kind of person. That only happened with sports players and they weren't like universally revered or anything. Maybe it's because my school was pretty big and there were multiple lunchtimes like there were years where I had a lunchtime where I had no friends there at the same time. So you kind of had to have a variety of friends I guess. If there were cliques maybe I could have found some fellow lesbians instead of most of my straight girl friends being fucking weird about it.

The speech that Carol Kane gives in "Jawbreaker" was clearly influenced by the speech that a teacher gives at the prom scene in the 1983 movie Valley Girl. (Avoid the 2020 musical remake.) That movie also dealt with peer pressure, although the writing wasn't as deep. However the acting is surprisingly really good for a B-flick 80's movie.

I would say the closest thing we got to these masterpieces is Assassination Nation. It's a great film. I wish it was more talked about. Sadly nowdays everything people watch is Marvel and Disney movies and the quirky crowd is drawn to A24 films. I feel like there is no in between with mainstream cinema. That restriction I feel like is what prevents the making of films like Heathers and Jawbreaker. I feel like a partial reason why we don't see teen movies in the movie theater is due to the rise in popularity in streaming services. Netflix has noticed and has churned out massive successes like To all the boys I've loved before and the kissing booth while traditional movies that do a movie release first don't get as much attention. This could also be due to the rise in teen tv series like Grand Army, Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why and countless others. Series get more teens invested and make them more willing to spend money on merch.

@@dadgbe4834 I don't think we should be restricting men from directing female driven films. If anything they have proven time and time again that they are capable of doing so. Black Christmas is an excellent example. It was directed by Bod Clark and has feminist text firmly engraved in its core as a film. The 2019 version on the other hand, while fun and a bit entertaining, is not nearly as good as the '74 original and it was directed by a woman. So the gender of the director doesn't really matter. What matters is their talent. I think the director of Assasination Nation is a talented man (he also did Euphoria and his name is escaping me at the moment). The film looks amazing, the main cast is awesome and the topics which the film addresses I think it tackles with the right amount of humor and horror. You can like or dislike the film all you want(hey...they can't be all winners), but saying it bad because a man directed it, is silly.

The fact that the term relational aggression came into popularity around the late 90s/ early 2000s is surprising and concerning, like psychological researchers of the mid 1900s didn't experience bullying when they were in grade and high school .....yikes. I don’t think it was that they didn’t experience it, it was that probably their parents viewed it as petty and told them to just get on with it, and they themselves once they got older, also thought of it as petty, especially considering adults tended to be more abusive back then whereas there is a type of cruelty nowadays that we tend to recognise as characteristic of kids rather than generally decent adults. Bullying and hierarchies in general was something that wasn’t really viewed as a bad thing since it was a significant part of their lives that everyone had to adhere to. I assume they probably saw it as character building. There is also the idea that kids, despite often being thought of as more mature back then, weren’t really as old in the head as far as their brains went. “Boys will be boys,” is something that’s always been said, but as far as girls go, they’ve always been sheltered, haven’t they? And the mid 1900s was really when they started to gain more freedom, and was probably where the modern sort of version of “female bullying” began. They could play with fashion and makeup, call friends late at night on the telephone, and go out dating unchaperoned. These are things that they can control for once, so they want to gain as much power as they can and hold onto it. (Especially since men were trying to reclaim these things in the mid 1900s, so they had to be sneaky). What I’m saying is, this is the first time where teenage girls were really allowed to be teenagers. The girls of the decades before it were both children and adults. They either didn’t engage in this sort of bullying as they were expected to be above it and focus on their future and retain whatever friends they could get in the meantime, or they did it in a very juvenile way, petty insults and mockery that was less subtle.

I love that in the trunk scene of Jawbreakers there is an echo of Heathers in the colors the characters wear. Like HBIC wears red, and the others have on blue, green, and yellow. Granted, not so monochomatic, but still. My interpretation of Heather Duke taking over was she was jealous of Chandler, hence the green. Today I remembered there's a Mean Girls 2, wow. Anyways I'm old so HS was many years ago for me but I do remember 3 major events involving cliques. The mass riot on the 1st day of school. The time the cliques broke away from each other and had the greatest time cause everyone started gambling with candy on "Poor People Beyblade" (just regular tops) and the time teachers gathered us up to ask _"Why do yall segregate yourselves?"_ to which we just shrugged and the teachers accepted that answer.

Heathers was an interesting movie. I always liked how free-spirited Veronica was; she definitely reminded me of my sisters and I in school, minus the whole murder thing. Jawbreaker has always been a favorite of my sisters and I especially since my name is Liz; they gave me a card in my stocking based off of the one in the movie and included a giant jawbreaker, one of my most favorite gifts ever! Mean Girls is just a wonderful movie. My sisters and friends and I quote that movie religiously. It's definitely a big part of our teen years and I'm glad it was made.

I was always left out by the kids at the playing field, but then I discovered why. I've got high functioning Autism, and can I just say special needs high school, is in some ways, even worse for a girl? Like, girls are better at copying things like social skills, so they go underdiagnosed all the time. As a result, the few girls who do get a diagnosis young, make up not even 10% of the student body. It's genuinely like an all boys high school until you notice the few scattered girls around the campus. That can be incredibly harmful, because the lack of girls makes the boys turn to the few that are there. I've been to three special needs highschools, was objectified every time, because most of my interests aren't girl coded I hung out with the guys but I would still always have one guy in my friendgroup trying to pressure me into a relationship and who shamed me for having a crush and/or relationship on a guy they didn't knew. I remember one mean girl who was boy crazy, in her first year she already had her nudes spread through the school and with the majority of the student body being boys, that only further bred the illusion she was just a slut they could take adantage of. But her mean antics made it hard for me to feel sorry for her at the time. That definitely made an impact on me. Like teenage girls wearing sexualized outfits such as Jawbreaker or Euphoria (Maddie's Carnival outfit), make me angry nowadays. Because high school taught me that predators, players and overall douchebags will target girls wearing outfits like that, and because they are still children, they are extremely vulnerable. If a person cannot drink and vote yet, they shouldn't wear a bralette or a foxy necklace or anything like that in public. Unless it's a special occasion and the parents are nearby, ready to intervene when a predator gets near their kid.
