Neptune and Neptune Soft in 0.5 are the rubbers I recommend for learning how to play defence with long pips. They are both MUCH easier to play with than the popular P1r Curl, P4 FL2 and FL3 alternatives. I would not recommend them for an over the table disturbance game. I think most players would progress out of them to one of the premium rubbers after reaching a high level but since that is such a small proportion of the population, it is surprising that the Neptune family has not achieved a much higher level of popularity at the club level.
