Yirmiyahu takes a walk through Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda open air market (AKA “the shuk”) with tour guide and Jewish food researcher Joel Haber. Together they explore (and taste!) unique dishes that originate from five different countries while learning about the history of Jewish people throughout the Diaspora.

No one questions the authenticity of foods in the new world countries like they do with Israeli food. E.g. the US, Mexico, etc, are never questioned for their authenticity, even though they clearly have foreign origin. Actually, mixed origin foods make them better, because you get the best of everything.

A little story concerning Jews fleeing to Latin America (it doesn't have anything to do with food, sadly): this summer, I found a letter, a travel diary and plane tickets in an old travel guide book. That book was left in a box in what used to be my grandparents' summer house for a long time, and while cleaning up, throwing things out, and sorting stuff, I stumbled across it. While I couldn't decipher the handwriting in the diary, the letter and tickets gave enough info for me to research online and find who this member of my grandpa's family had been having a correspondence with. After only a few hours, I was able to connect the dots and found out the letters had been sent to a Jew who had managed to escape from the Nazis and had settled in Mexico by 1942 , where he connected with other exiles and wrote anti-Nazi articles for political magazines. The correspondence which the letter I found belongs to apparently started after the end of WW2, when the two men reconnected. I also found out that they had both been members of the Socialist party before the Nazis came to power, so that's how they knew eachother. I will make copies of all the documents I found and give them to the local Jewish museum. I've always been fascinated by the history of the diaspora and finding things like that was very exciting.

@deborahfreedman333 - Yemenite Jahnun and Mlawach are served with hot tomato sauce, Tomatoes too came from the new world - no way Yemenite Jews ate that after King Solomon Era, as well as Falafel (that is Egyptian) was probably not eaten by Pharaohs .Potatoes were probably brought from new world first of all by Spaniards and Tortia is a Spanish omelet with potatoes.

Thank you for acknowledging the cultural origins of these cuisines and not culturally appropriating them like others. It frustrates me when I see label such as “Israeli Khumus” (it’s Hummus) or “Israeli Falafel” two typical Lebanese delicacies. I believe that such an approach is insulting to both the original culture and Israel who has so many proprietary things to give, starting from the fact that it can be a melting pot for different cultures. It’s the role of Israelis to fight for that, and stand against the current policies turning Israel into a one-flavoured state where not even all jews are accepted.

@Georgio476 - Whoever is insulted is whoever chooses to be insulted no matter the reason is, now as well as there is Colombian way of eating Arepa and Venezuelan way I guess no Colombian or Venezuelan gets insulted, We in Israel know very well that Hummus is Lebanese but there is an Israeli way to eat it so if the term "Israeli Hummus " insults somebody it will probably be insulted by nonmatter what, about Falaffel , did you know Falaffel is not Lebanese but Egyptian ? and happends to be one of most popular street foods in Israel and there is an Israeli way to eat it so there is an "Israeli Falaffel" - there are some other dishes that are oriental by origin and not eaten anywhere but Israel like "Sabbih" so it is considered Israeli (originated by Jews from Iraq and was unknown by muslim arabs in Iraq) - Usually whoever likes in a political sense to delegitimize Israel says that all those foods (Hummus, Falafel, Tahini, pita, Sabih )are Palestinian - that is the origin of the insult issues when it goes to cultural or gastronomic matters. So all that we have to fight for is just to be aware of that and be able to explain it. About all that further on you will find comments from insulted Palestinians or Pro Palestinians just to understand my point of view.

Colombia and Venezuela are 2 countries that were founded by the same colonial power, and for the most part of their history shared the same struggles and had a common path, something that is not the case in the current context. And no, I hate to break it to you, something can be inherently insulting, and Jews exactly know that with all the struggles they went through especially in Europe. Accordingly, you cannot dismiss anti-semitic statements for example by saying whoever is insulted chooses to be so. Now based on your general approach, I believe it’s you who is politicizing this things. I never mentioned Palestine. I only talked about hummus and falafel (and I see your point on the claims they are Egyptian), but based on the academical and historical resources I have access to, I claim they are Lebanese (please share any other resource you might have). Variations do actually allow for identity appropriation, with Falafel for example whether the paste is made of chickpeas only or fava beans are added makes a difference. But with Hummus I really don’t see any room for variation. As for traditional Jewish dishes, it’s up to Israel and its different Jewish communities to culturally negotiate whether they would accept to label these dishes as Israeli or not, it’s not up to me to say, nor the general Israeli populace. For example, if Iraqi Jews in Israel (proprietors of their own cultural heritage) choose to assimilate it with the modern Israeli state's culture they are free to do so, but they also have the right to claim it as an independent heritage that them and only them have ownership to.

Interesting funny fact. John Ward who became Jack Birdy (aka Jack Sparrow from pirates of carribean movie) got married to a female pirate and both converted to Islam. Then they saved the Jews of Spain and Muslims using their pirate ship to save them from death and persecution carrying them to Morroco and others places. Potentially the lady husband ancestors might of been on Jack Birdys ship, what an adventure. Also another interesting story that will explain how jews got Yemen. I listened to an Islamic Scholar who told me, two times before Prophet (swt) was born in Mecca, the Kaaba was attacked, thats why the Kaaba had to be rebuilt couple of times. The year of Elephant, when King of Yemen attacked a year in which Prophet Muhammad (saw) was born. There was previous early attack by earlier Yemeni King a hundred or two hundred years before or may be earlier. As he was about to attack the city. Some jews approached and warned him coming of a Prophet or Moshaich from the area. He converted to judasim and took some jews back to Yemen.

Islamic era Edit In the 14th century, many Moors and Jews, who were fleeing persecution in Spain, migrated south to the Timbuktu area, which was part of the Songhai Empire at that time. Among them was the Kehath (Ka'ti) family, which was descended from Ismael Jan Kot Al-yahudi of Scheida, Morocco. The sons of this prominent family founded three villages which still exist near Timbuktu -- Kirshamba, Haybomo, and Kongougara. In 1492, Askia Muhammad I came to power in the previously tolerant region of Timbuktu and decreed that Jews must convert to Islam or leave; Judaism became illegal in Mali, as it did in Catholic Spain that same year. This was based on the advice of Muhammad al-Maghili. As the historian Leo Africanus wrote in 1526: In Garura there were some very rich Jews. The intervention of the preacher (Muhammid al-Maghili) of Tlemcen set up the pillage of their goods, and most of them have been killed by the population. This event took place during the same year when the Jews had been expelled from Spain and Sicily by the Catholic King. Leo Africanus further wrote: The king (Askia) is a declared enemy of the Jews. He will not allow any to live in the city. If he hears it said that a Berber merchant frequents them or does business with them, he confiscates his goods.
