Good Onya Glen! You uploaded some interesting experimental videos over the years, and 2021 was another good one for us to ponder about. Challenging us to think differently about Hot Metal and the way it moves. Cheers for 2022.

That’s great Glen, almost 1% carbon is going to be very hard but I expect you tempered it well! Looking forward to seeing it in use!

Hey Paul, I final quenched it in oil and I had so little oil left, it cooled very, very slowly and so I felt no additional tempering was needed. I'll show myself using this hammer for the first time in tomorrow's live stream. Thanks.

The dog head style with a slight curve in the main body of the hammer reminds me of a Saw Doctors hammer. I have one they are a usefull blade Smith's tool.
@gstongs
@gstongs 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, I had to check that type of hammer. Yes, very similar for sure. But I think saw doctor hammers have less face radius; are more flat, given their purpose. Thanks.

Glen, very nice looking hammer! I have a question about the heat treating. After forging and cleaning up, you heated it red and quenched in water. That should harden it. Later, you heated to red (?) again which would remove the hardening and then quenched in oil of some kind. The second quench in oil should harden it once more, to some extent, maybe not as hard as a water quench. I never saw you temper the hammer. The heat treating left me confused, not being hardening then tempering in that order. Was the oil bath your tempering? Have a Happy New Year!
@gstongs
@gstongs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and yes, that water quench did harden it. But probably too hard given the steel. So I annealed it after that water quench then hardened/quenched in soybean oil. I had so little oil that it took forever for it to cool so I felt no added tempering was needed. I should have explained. Thanks and have a great 2022.

Can you speak to face grinding a store bought Blacksmith's hammer? Often, these hammers come with other than smooth faces. (JF)
@gstongs
@gstongs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi KS, Many store bought hammers don't have enough radius on the face. Depending on the hammer, you may have to grind some. Go slow and cool often so as to not overheat. And I think it's good to give the very perimeter of the face a sort of secondary radius. I'll do my best to talk about this more. Thanks.

Happy New Year Glen. I wish you health and wealth for 2022. What a nice hammer. I have a question though,,, is there any set in stone dimensions on a handle drift for a 2 pound hammer for example?
@gstongs
@gstongs 2 жыл бұрын
No real set in stone dimensions but you want to make sure you drift long and wide enough so that your handle wood isn't overly small and weak. I find 1" front to back by 5/8" wide to be sufficient for a 2 pound hammer. Thanks.

i don’t know if you’ve answered this before, but how do you keep your tools from rusting if you keep them outside. i keep mine outside and i can’t keep them from rusting.
@gstongs
@gstongs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, Just using tools is the best way to keep rust at bay. And so if you don't use certain (outside) tools on a regular basis, it's good to pick them up anyway and maybe rub down with an oily cloth. Thanks.
