Re DiMarzio's, he did have the DiMarzio YJM, now known as the HS-4, before the Seymour Duncan YJM. Not sure what positions but old fender catalogs probably hold the answer there. Thinking the difference isn't huge to most of us.

I did not hear any mention of the guitar strings, Yngwie uses Fender gauges .08/.11/.14/.22/.32/.46. This is like an set of 8's with the top two heavier bass strings. Quite a big part of his tone, IMHO. Thanks Elmo, enjoying this series!

My 1987x reissue is a 2018 model made to my order. I think they installed a bright cap. When using the Fender YJM overdrive, it's too saturated and buzzy. I had to use the lower output channel 2 inputs for a more pure tone.
@lynyrddeville6 жыл бұрын
Besides the arpeggios at light speed Strat/Marshall parts of Yngwie's sound and playing, I really think the things that make Yngwie sound uniquely like himself, are his vibrato and personal idea of intonation. Elmo, you rule at explaining and nailing Yngwie's sound and style while being a stellar player who sounds like Elmo, not to be confused with Yngwie who while similar, is different altogether. Whew. Great show man , I am so glad I found your show, you are a true talent.

You always hear that high gain yet articulate tone from the amp and overdrive pedal sounding like it`s more gain than it really is along with the dohk dohk dohk delay in Malmsteen`s tone. That`s the base line. I can take a early Zepplin tone on my Boss Katana and add delay and a smidge of reverb and be in the ball park.

yngwie's sound actually went through alot of changes over the years, just because of the different mixing/production techniques. odyssey was my favourite, it sounded nice and sharp like yours, but they used some stereo tricks to make one guitar sound really wide. fire and ice had a nice warm thick eq to it(but i wish it had more stereo width). i think releasing the animal is the closest to sounding like a modern professional sound

I aspire to have a tone somewhere between Malmsteen (Unleash the fury) and early 90's thrash-metal. I am a rhythm player and I enjoy getting a real nasty riff going. However, leads are leads and Yngwie's suits me on so many levels. So to accomplish my desired tone: fender malmsteen signature strat (2016, so SD yjm's), Ibanez 4x12 cab, Laney Ironheart tubeamp 60w. Now, the Ironheart has 3 channels: clean, less clean, lead. I set it at the less clean and power things up with a fender Malmsteen od. To keep things under control I have a Boss cs3 in the beginning and a Boss noise-suppressor at the end of the chain. The Ironheart has quite a tasteful reverb but I do supplement my tone with a Bi-yang delay-pedal. Dunlop cry baby - wah. I do dial in a more Malmsteen-like tone from time to time. But I prefer a slightly more gritty one. One reason being that if it's to clean I will hear the mistakes even more often 😁. One thing with single coils is that they are quite unforgiving, they won't let you get away with f*cking up. This is what Iike about them, besides the tone. But I don't want to hear every bit of sloppy playing. And. I know my tonal roots and I was a big big fan of Dave Mustaine (rhythms, not his leads) for many years so I try to balance these two tones, which are more or less opposities of each other. And I'll add, for anyone looking for that Marshall-sound but might lack the money. Go Laney--they are more or less a poor man's Marshall. Just a tip 👍
@MrPolevaulter6 жыл бұрын
Good tip man. I need to try me a Laney. I know IA uses them, although his sound is very different from most others.
@MagisterTuomo6 жыл бұрын
@@MrPolevaulter Sure is. Those Caparisons have their own tones, especially his current 8-string (Applehorn, was it?). I once dialed in his settings on my, still didn't get close. Tone is in the fingers, is so true. Every bit of the quirkiness in his playing comes from them fingers, that's for sure. But yeah. I really enjoy Laney. I started out using them to get the Marshall-sound without busting the bank. Had a good deal running through my then-band's distributioncompany so I got them cheap. Somewhere along the way I became a Laney-fan. I've converted two individuals this last year after having them play at my house. Dark side, man. Laney's and cookies 😈

Technincally speaking, and just to be really anal about it, the HS-3 & YJM pickups are both humbuckers. They´re just much lower output than a regular sized one, also the coils are stacked on top of each other, rather than side-by-side on a regular sized humbucker. I tried a strat with Mojo Tone Quiet Coil pickups, they are single-coil sounding humbuckers with no hum. Amazing sound. the coils are side-by-side like on a regular HB, and it makes for a much better sound than the stacked ones. Also, I thought YJM dimed his Plexis, adding the overdrive to tighten up his sound and give it a little more saturation?
