It's complicated- but if you just look at Harmonic Minor modes the same way you look at Major Scale modes- it makes perfect sense. ANY scale can be viewed with it's own "modes" off the scale degrees- Harmonic Minor has it's own set is all. In fact- here they are for anyone interested: Harmonic minor mode I : Harmonic minor scale (minor). It is the most used of the seven modes.The formula is 1- 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - 7. YNGWIE STARTS HERE Harmonic minor mode II : Locrian 13 or Locrian 6 (half-diminished). Formula is 1 - b2 - b3 - 4 - b5 - 6 - b7. Harmonic minor mode III : Ionian #5 (augmented). Formula is 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - #5 - 6 - 7. Harmonic minor mode IV : Dorian #11 (or dorian #4) (minor). Formula is 1 - 2 - b3 - #4 - 5 - 6 - b7. Harmonic minor mode V : Phrygian dominant (dominant). Formula is 1 - b2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - b7. THIS IS THE ONE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MOSTLY Harmonic minor mode VI : Lydian #2 (major). Formula is 1 - #2 - 3 - #4 - 5 - 6 -7 . Harmonic minor mode VII. Super locrian bb7 (diminished). Formula is 1 - b2 - b3 - b4 - b5 - b6 - bb7. AND YNGWIE USES THIS FOR ALL HIS DIMINISHED RUNS- Copied from some jazz site www.jazz-guitar-licks.com.

Yep, those scales will help. Most important though would be accuracy to your hand synchronisation. Without that then it's a losing battle.

What the difference between Phrygian Dominant and harmonic minor? They sound pretty the same
@MrPolevaulter4 жыл бұрын
They're different modes of the same scale.
@yjmsrv4 жыл бұрын
Phrygian dominant scale is the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale, the fifth being the dominant. So if you're playing in A Minor- (Harmonic Minor) you play E Phrygian Dominant over the E chord- same notes- different chord tones and different emphasis on the scale degrees. It's like any other "mode" but it's derived from the Harmonic Minor scale instead of the standard Major Scale. Next up is the Diminished runs Yngwie uses - again same "A Harmonic Minor" but you start all your Diminished arpeggios on (as Yngwie says) major 3rd of the Phrygian Dominant- or the G# note. You're still in A Harmonic Minor- but playing off it's raised 7th degree which really wants to resolve to the Key- A. That's why it sounds SO COOL! You only have to learn one scale- but the note and chord tones change for each chord in the background. Honestly it's a lot like what people do with CAGED- only with the Harmonic Minor instead of the Ionian Major Scale.

Elmo....you are never sloppy, and your tone is awesome. When I play the blues in order to sound authentic and yet unconventional, I use the Harmonica minor scale by putting the guitar strings against my throat and attempting to sing sounding like a mouth harp....never mind I shouldn't try to be humorous this early. Hey I always thought Yngwie could do a cover of Hava Nagilla, sounded like what you were doing too. Seriously I think Mixolydian or the Dominant scale sounds great over blues and other exotic things, I want that to be my go to scale/mode, Bruce

@@MrPolevaulter Ah yes, Uli Jon Roth, an inspiration for Yngwie, and Yngwie covered The Sails of Charon, another fantastic Scorpions tune from the 70s, and he stayed pretty true to the original solo. Yes you're right Mixolydian mode, and I believe mostly one pick per string. We had to learn that song back at GIT in LA, Bruce.

ELMO KARJALINEN, i thought you were going to show more examples of yngwie guitar solos using the phrygian dominant mode. Which songs does yngwie use the phrygian dominant mode? You said that the phrygian dominant mode is a minor scale with a Raised 3rd?

@MrPolevaulter4 жыл бұрын
@@kellecetraro4807 Not sure, as I don't have a JCM900, but I'd try to get it as close to a Plexi as possible in terms of sound and use something like a Fender Yngwie overdrive in front.

I had completely forgot about this series. Have to check out the gear-episode again, I think.... But on a different note. I believe that this channel has quadrupled its followers since I started following it some 2,5 years ago....
