Linklight returns to the workshop for Rivals of Aether which gives you access to custom new characters or mods! In this video I check out Thomas the Tank Engine, a classic character from a classic TV show. This character was really well made and had some super interesting mechanics.

I like how Thomas’s moves were incorporated with railway equipment. Like his recovery is the Breakdown Crane, one of his up move is a signal, shield are the buffers, Side B is a turntable (etc.). This mod looks really cool and I also like how his icon is from the RWS If Thomas was in smash bros this is what his move set should be!

mod creator here: nice to see you like the mod the shield animation is just the buffers at end of the tracks the character was a meme-y pick but i did want to also make it true to source aswell Thomas has Steve Jab/Forward Tilt / Uair/Utilt so you can move and jump while doing them with Melee fox shine jump cancel on hit on Nspecial basically kinda good reason i did made him slow-ish becuase of that also there is a 3rd model/resprite skin change for Toby the tram engine

I feel like this character doesn't have the most fititng moveset. You'd expect a train to go fast horizontally, have poor recovery, and hit like a truck. Instead, you got slow movement and aerial juggles… Not enough was done with the whole 'facing one direction' gimmick either. That said, there's clearly a lot of effort put in this character and I appreciate that the creator actually made an AI for it.

the reason why he is slow: becuase it is a steam train still : the slower kind of trains aswell as i had to make it fit with the balance of the game and he is a heavy weight and feel like a heavy weight like him needed to be slow and bad jumps: i tried with better speed and so on and he felt abit TOO powerful with really good movement also he has ultimate Steve like jab/Tilt and Utilt/Uair so that was also the reason why i needed him to be slow like this also Nspecial is Melee Fox Shine basically but need to hit for jump canceland interact abit with Down-Special train signals also made it so you can do aerials or air dodge cancel the moment the crane releases you and you have super armor while moving up on the crane

@@DoctorFlux I feel the slow movement fits Thomas well; although steam locomotives can achieve great speeds (the speed record being Mallard's 144mph, and multiple other express engines being able to reach 100+mph like City of Truro and Flying Scotsman), they are famously slow to start and stop, not only due to their inherent inertia, but also due to how slow their initial buildup of steam can be, which when taking the fighting setting it means that Thomas ends up doing very short runs on stage, making it rather fitting that he's slow :3

Honestly the dialogue in the early seasons can get quite intense lol Another great one by Thomas is "You're ugly face is enough to frighten anyone! You're like a green caterpillar with red stripes! You crawl like one, too!" And Thomas isn't the only one, _all_ of the engines get into this bickering hehe, it's great ;p

That “cow catcher” is actually a snow plow and the shield is a pair of buffers, the crane also never changed one was just on a bridge and the “fart” was him flashing his tail lamp and the sign is actually a signal, and the spinning is the engines spinning on a turn table

I believe the Shield is supposed to be the buffers, and what is used to turn the engines around at 3:28 is a turntable, used to turn locomotives around. The big white sign is a signal. The platform at 6:05 is a station, and the man on the platform is Sir Toppam Hat (or the Fat Controller as his engines call him). He's the engines owners. And the "Cowcatcher" is a snowplow

As a train nerd, a really neat detail is seeing the lamps swap colours depending on what direction you're going. The back lamp will typically be red with the front ones clear, however upon reversing the colours will swap which is accurate to most engines and the general operation of railways, especially if running a push/pull service since red typically indicates the back of a train. So when you're reversing, the front of the engine now becomes the back.

5:43 not a reference. Its a *VERY* common thing on real life railway's. Their called buffers, buffers are used to stop locomotive's from derailing off the rails. They are very important to railways, especially for the engine's that have faulty brake's.

My childhood has been fulfilled. Finally, there's a Thomas mod of that! There are some references I know and like: References: 2:00 - I just wanna ask: Why does Thomas have multiple engine costumes? That's kinda weird, but... okay.... 2:13 - Okay, that's a movie reference to the 2015 Movie: The Adventure Begins 2:22 - That's a legit reference to his real-life counter part; the LB&SCR 0-6-0 E2 Class Tank Engine 2:50 - That's a Signal, which tells the engine when to stop or when to go. Good reference. 3:03 - That's a reference to some episodes of Thomas & Friends, when the engines are waiting at a signal, they'll sometimes blow their whistles to get the attention of the signalman (the one operating the signals and the switches) 3:27 - Yo no way Percy became a Beyblade. Just kiddin', that's another equipment used in the show, the turntable. It turns the engine to another direction. But this goes to another level. Probably that turntable idea is inspired from episode to Season 1 Episode 15: Tenders and Turntables, in which one of the characters, James (the red engine), gets dizzy on the turntable as it spins around so fast due to the wind. 3:44 - That's the breakdown train. It lifts up things back onto the ground, such as engines, and coaches, and trucks. Good idea here. 4:15 - That's the snowplow or the cowcatcher (whichever country you are in), but it's mostly called a snowplow in the TV show, which plows things off the line. 4:41 - That's a danger signal. No, wait. That's a backing signal! (lol, a reference to Season 2 Episode 7: Percy and the Signal) 5:05 - That's a level crossing. It will open for trains to pass through but will close for the cars to stop, and then vise versa. 5:18 - That's a good reference design. That's based of the Railway Series. 5:52 - Buffers: Which stops the engines from crashing. 5:57 - That's a cool reference, and it includes the Fat Controller (the man in-charge of the railway), saying one of his famous lines: "You're a Really Useful Engine!" Errors: 2:17 - Rosie's name is spelled wrong. Things I love about it: 2:24 - YO NO WAY! GAMEBOY THOMAS?!?! That's what I need! This is, by far, the BEST Thomas mod I've ever seen. You should check out Luminance by artist of seer. He’s another one of the cursed signs, but in my opinion, he’s the best. Also, Eggman is the most overpowered character in rivals that isn’t a God. Made by the same guy who made Marx which you should also check out.
