Hi everyone, welcome back. So I thought I'd do a video based on a request from a subscriber (waving to you, you know who you are 😀) and have another go at Suffolk puffs or Yo-yos. I did make these years ago at school, I made a caterpillar for my mum, well she liked it anyway. I also made a shawl but I'm not sure if it ever got finished and I don't know what happened to it.
I decided to get hold of a yo-yo maker and I know that Clover make several different sizes, this one makes a finished puff size of 1 3/4". To make this a little more interesting I decided to use silk scraps and a silk backing to make a cushion, it's going to look really effective, and the finished Suffolk puff cushion will be on my Instagram @ellie_birchell_hughes
I hope you enjoy the video! Ellie 💚

I was gifted a sweater size tub of fabric circles and a shoe size tub of completed yoyos. I had no idea this was even an option! Well, now I've got to finish this project. The original owners of these yoyos intended to make a quilt. I really don't know what I'll end up making yet. I make the yoyos with hand quilting thread. I don't have the tool you showed, I find it easy to sew the yoyos by just folding the fabric down as I go. Since I am gathering the fabric, they seem to all be about the same size. I'm impressed with your silk yoyos! They are just beautiful. I like the idea of a pillow cover. It seems more obtainable than a quilt! Thank you for your ideas and patience with that tool!

Thank you!! I've looked at the directions provided by Clover too! I threw the whe thing in a drawer and went back to winging the hem around the circle...hoping for the best. I may give that Clover thing a try now. Bless you and yoyo on!

I was sooo excited to see this video! I am not a perfectionist and I feel these are very forgiving. I can sew while watching t.v. The hole in the center is affected by the length of the stitches. Your silk is beautiful and will make a gorgeous pillow cover. I have seen vests, quilts, crafts and many cute things made with yoyos. Thank you Eleanor!! I love your videos!!!

I have one of those Clover yo-yo making gadgets. Thank you Eleanor, for the tutorial, because the first time I used it it was such a pain in the rump I decided to just do it by hand... consequently I only made one yo-yo. That was years ago. Great job you❣👍

Amazing colours as ever! I saw a Suffolk Puff floor length coat once, it looked spectacular. Must have taken ages.

Enjoyed this video. But I have made yo-yos for many years. This to me looks like too much work. 😊. But I’m old school and haven’t had a problem with making them even. Thank you so much. You’re very interesting.

Outstandind tutorial. When I watched my first tutorial about the Clover i got really confused about the steps about the needle place when it first started. But you were totally clear. I'm also dyslexic and find some instructions very confusing. Thank you so much. Your silk yo-yos are beautiful and very elegant. You've helped me a great deal and i appreciate it! You're delightful to watch. 😊

When I was a child my grandmother used to make them, sew them together to make blankets with. I am from South Africa and in Afrikaans we called them "poepoliekies". I have used them on some of the outfits I made myself.

My grandmother had a coverlet that was on her day bed. I was fascinated with it. My early interest in fabrics and what can be done with them. I don't remember exactly but I think hers were of cotton.

Here in North Georgia USA we call them yo yos. I’ve never heard another name. I bought a beautiful vintage yo yo table runner on Etsy that has yo yos that are all the same gold color and seem to be mounted on a gold piece of silk. It is beautiful. I considered making a curtain of yo yos but changed my mind. I have the whole clover yo yo set of different sizes. They are pretty centers of appliqué flowers on quilts. My mother made award ribbons for quilt shows using yo yos. I have a board on Pinterest for yo yo ideas. I would love to make a whole bedspread for my bed of yo yos. I would have a solid color bedspread underneath.

I use a large knot to start my thread off but I don't pull it all the way through. I leave a tail with the knot at the end so it is easier to find. When done I knot it. It took me quite some time to realise this so I thought I will share with you all.

Broadcloth is a poly/cotton blend. I believe usually 65% poly 35% cotton. It's thin and soft fabric.

I'm curious if you finished your yo-yo pillow? I'd like to know how you applied it to your foundation and how it looks finished

Good question, 🤣 I've finished making all the yo-yos and am in the process of stitching them all together so very nearly? I promise I'll do a little update when I do.
