After I showed the owl with the yoyo eyes in a previous sew with me video I had a request to show how I make fabric yoyos. Clover has some wonderful yoyo makers but I do not own any at the moment so I show how I make my yoyos with needle and thread and no tools.

Thank you. Seeing the size of your stitches helped me in this so that the yo-yo is tighter when I pull it. I have now made three. My mother-in-law, now deceased 5 years, left a box full of circles, a few finished yo-yos and about 100+ already ut together. I want to finish this and make it whatever size it will end up being to give to one of her grandchildren. Thank you once again.

That sounds wonderful Judith! It will be nice for one of her grandkids. I used to want to make a yo-yo quilt but I think for me maybe I’ll make a little pillow cover instead or a wall hanging. I don’t think i would get much use out of a bed cover.

Robin: After five years after my grandmother passed away at 98 years, I got up the nerve to open a suitcase that she had stored in the baement. In the suitcase I a yo yo quilt that she started in the 1980s. I also found knitting projects and a regular quilt that she was working on. I will finish this work for her. After many videos on yo yos, by far this is the best one that I came across. Thank you so much for the thoughtful video on making individual yo yos, the many ways they can be used and especially how to use them to make a quilt. Great Job.

Bev, we just got to our 1st home and we have been infested by mice having babies and all of them must be pooping. My hubby is trying his hardest to go fast in cleaning up this house as it gags me. I worked hard yesterday and did my poor body in so I am checking out some videos. I really do enjoy Robin as she is down-to-earth and checks her emails, I think. I need to learn more things that I know a little about. I wanted to tell you that it was so nice of you to thank Robin as some people don't take that time. You have been a blessing to me today. Good luck with your yo-yo's. Vicki

I went to the post office and found a little surprise. Thank you so much! I always look at the address, date, and post office stamp on envelopes and I was confused because the stamp says TN but your address says VA. Then when I read your note I understood. There a few places in the US like that and I think it’s cool. I love your spool pin doiles!! I was surprised that they look like thread crochet. I’m going to design and art quilt around them. I’m not a master sock knitted but if you get lost I might be able to help or at least guide you to a video that can explain It. I can follow a pattern but I don’t know the formulas and why things are the way they are. I love toe up because I can knit until I run out of yarn. Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend!

Now I know how to repair my mom’s 1930’s (originally crated in that era) yo-yo quilt top. Her’s was lined with an old sheet but someone removed sections I’m guessing to repair but it was dumped off at my mom and I’s old “junk” shop/thrift-like store in the 80’s. I was able to repair the old feed sack quilt my mom’s mom made in the 1930’s/1940’s which still had the moss “ticking” (stuffing/batting) after locating some replica feed sack material. Man was THAT a project!
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like your Mom likes to keep you busy lol. At least it should be easier to find repro fabric for the 1930'3 yo-yo quilt. I always look at the quilts at thrift stores. I like to rescue them too.

I started making them using a small plate for a circle, before buying the Olfa circle cutter. I always turn the edges down before sewing as I don't know at the time what project I might use them for. Also I learnt that smaller stitches make a large hole, larger stitches leave a smaller hole. When I'm finished I knot both ends together, to be sure they won't come undone at a later date and sometimes thread the cotton through the gatherings for extra strength. You have some lovely fun fabrics :)
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 6 жыл бұрын
Great tips! I tried tying the two ends together but it became too fiddly for my fingers.
@lesleygilbert1945
@lesleygilbert1945 6 жыл бұрын
Once you've finished threading and pulled the thread tighter, just grab the knot and pull some thread back out, to enable you to tie a knot :) Hope I explained that right
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You explained it perfectly. I have some nerve damage so my fingers don't always work so sometimes I can't feel the thread and that makes it harder to knot off.

RsIslandCrafts - Robin how is that done. I'm really new to quilting bit am challenging myself. I have made one but it's a surprise so can't post pic publicly. But I did some pinwheels today following your tut.too. My art quilt has background colours in stripes for horizon etc and on top of it I have a pinapple a shell a parrot and a flower... Haha no idea how to do those. Yet tho
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to make a simple pineapple applique you can google pineapple outline coloring book pages. Then you can use those designs to cut out the fabric for your pineapple. Yellows on the bottom and greens on the top. If you want to go a step above then you can sew some different yellow squares together until they are about the size of the outline from the coloring book page. Depending on how large or small your pineapple will be you can choose your square size. Maybe 2.5" for a medium pineapple or 1.5" for a smaller pineapple. I hope I didn't confuse you too much. lol
