Man, I love how experimental the late 90's and early 00's were when it came to video games. You had cool bizarre and wacky stuff like Katamari Damacy, Parappa the Rapper, and Seaman, among other extremely unique games like NiGHTS into Dreams, Jet Set Radio, and Lack of Love. I think that with the advent of 3D graphics in console games and the bigger space of CD-ROMs it allowed for game creators to be more inventive with their game ideas, and I think it's a bummer that you don't see stuff this creative in mainstream video games nowadays. Of course, a lot of these games weren't perfect, since when trying new stuff like this it often ends up janky in retrospect (like Parappa 1 for instance) but I find it kinda charming actually. You never quite know what you're gonna get with these old games and that's what I find fascinating about games like these. I do think indie games are now filling this niche, though they seem to be more about reinventing old genres than doing completely new and strange things, but there's plenty of strange and new ideas too. Thanks for covering weird stuff that I otherwise would've never known about! As for the game itself it looks more like a game that's fun to mess around in than it is fun to play, which is perfectly okay, especially with the unique artstyle and awesome music (at least from what I can hear in the video). I'm not a huge fan of how John K's art translates to 3D though but it's not horrible. IIRC he did art for another Japanese only game, this time a skateboarding game. The only thing I remember about it is that the music is good, there's a mummy girl or something, and you can bounce off a giant pair of boobs. I don't know how to end this comment
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 6 жыл бұрын
You ended that comment just fine--more than fine, in my opinion...can't go wrong with "you can bounce off a giant pair of boobs!" The skating game where I guess you can do this in is called Go! Go! Hypergrind for the GameCube, and I think it was a North American exclusive. Apparently, Spumco worked on some interesting fishing game for the PS2...anyway, I do agree with what you say about the late 90s and early 2000s era of gaming--it's my favorite era for just those reasons...and nostalgia, too, I suppose.

This is a perfect example of why box art is important. Why didn’t they use John K’s artwork on the box to draw more people in? I wish I could play this game; even if i got it and managed to play Japanese games on my ps2, the language barrier would be too big for me. On the other hand, maybe it’d be a good way to brush up on one’s Japanese...?

Literally, as soon as I saw the border for the video, I was like, "That looks like John K's art", haha. This looks really cool! It's awesome to see that kinda art done nicely in 3D. Love seein' an Import Gaming FTW upload show up in my subscriptions feed. I recently have been playing _EX Troopers_ for PS3, actually, so I've been thinking about other imports to check out this week. You have eerily impeccable timing, man. I don't think I'll be able to play this considering my lack of Japanese language skills, but I'm still happy to know about it. Plus, I'm now reminded of some other "whacked-out cartoon-looking" titles. I KNOW THERE'S MORE.... I feel like this may have been a bit of a trend at some point, because there's a couple games in the Dreamcast/PS2 era that I can recall now, like _Cool Cool Tune (Toon?)_ and _Poinie's Poin_ that are probably worth looking into now. Ooh - I just remembered _Go Go Hypergrind_ 'cuz of this! Yeah, there's definitely some stuff I gotta look into now - this jogged memories for a bunch of games. Thanks, _Yoake no Mariko!_ (^-^)

I love Cool Cool Toon and have wanted to talk about that and Poinie's Poin for a while now, actually. And you just reminded me that I need to get Go Go Hypergrind, ha ha. Uninhibited _Ren and Stimpy_ creator Spumco coupled with quirky experimental Japanese game design...SOLD, to the man in the front drooling on himself (hey, that's me!!) At first glance of the cover it certainly is an off-putting Western style, and I thought it was perhaps Susumu Matsushita's work poorly rendered, but I'm more than happy and surprised to hear who it was instead! No matter how it plays, just the fact it exists is good enough for me. Those jiggle physics are top notch, and they did a fairly good job re-creating the style and fluidity of the characters in 3-D for the PS2 imo. The gameplay seems interesting at the very least, and I hope to get my hands on a copy soon! Thank you for introducing me to such an obscure rarity of a collaboration. Your channel is still criminally underrated because honestly...who else is bringing subject matter this fresh and interesting in depth to the table in this niche?! Your videos keep getting better every time. This game looks hilarious with friends. Not that I didn't laugh a shit ton while watching your solo gameplay! That art is so distinctly Ren and Stimpy. Thanks for digging into it, cause that would have bothered the hell out of me. The Sexy Boy Lolly is so fucking funny getting caught in the tub shaving. That look on her face! Is she more worried about being caught in the tub or shaving her apparent beard? Of course, I love the outdoor shots. The retired train looks cool. I'd rather have that than the stupid rail... The statue looked dope in her new headset. Her lack of clothes though? ASCII makes killer controllers. Their ASCII Pad for the SNES is my favorite controller. I even plug it into my PC for modern games like Risk of Rain. You've picked some weird, obscure games lately to feature on your channel. Makes me wonder what bizarre thing you have planned next? Excellent video, Jimmy!

Quite technically impressive, especially for an early PS2 title, and probably within the last wave of experimental genres, for which the PS1, Saturn and Dreamcast were notorious for... Now you can find cult-like, underground-type games only through Indie devs, on Steam, but they are almost always based on those foundations and never sit quite the same way, as they're much more predictable. The good thing about them is that they play much better/intuitively, which is part of the predictability and respective reference to the inspirations - - it never feels truly original (like now, the City-Pop and Vapor-Wave scene merging with the gaming scene, using retro-color schemes). A good example of not-original-but-perfected-and-respected-source-material are Cuphead; Sonic Mania and Undertale. Referenced concepts but really good execution (Projects like Cuphead, in which some of the devs had to mortgage their houses twice, show a rare level of commitment, for 7 years, reminiscent of the first Gran Turismo and Shenmue, both taking 5 years to develop and both having the Directors sleeping in the office...) You can only achieve true freedom-of-expression when not having to worry about taboo topics that your platform might censor, and that wasn't as much as an issue back in the 90's - early 2000's, even if your Publisher was one of the most prolific.

You can listen to most of the game's music in the options menu, which is where I recorded it to use for this video. If I ever make a second channel for gameplay and miscellaneous stuff, I'll upload some tracks there.

Hey Jimmy, out of sheer curiosity I fiddled with that URL link on the way back machine. It wasn't Mariko.4649.com It was just Mariko4649.com. Found some nostalgic stuff going all the way back to 2002. As for the game itself, it looks fun. I'm at a point where I can appreciate the work Jon K put into things while still condemning what he did to his staff and of course those poor girls. They were (are) my age. I remember wanting to send in drawing of Ren and Stimpy to Nickelodeon back in the day, but my mom had no stamps (at least none she was willing to give me for basically 'nonsense' to her). It's super weird to think I could've ended up like they did if I had... Also, I'm sorry I'm so late to the party. At some point in the last year KZbin unsubbed me from you...
@KasumiKenshirou
@KasumiKenshirou Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you dodged a bullet thanks to your mom's cheapness and/or lack of stamps, thankfully. If you can still enjoy his work then you shouldn't feel guilty about it, as long as you don't give him any more of your money.

Considering how borderline rascist some of the character designs are, it's no surprise that John K had his hand in this. To each their own tho.

Clearly no doubt there was no objection in Japan to that either. Perhaps having free creative reign is what prompted such a partnership? Overseas where it wouldn't touch his already failing career stateside no less.

What if another 90's Cartoon Veteran like say Joe Murray the creator of Rocko's Modern Life and Cartoon Network's Camp Lazlo or Craig McCracken the creator of both The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends and Disney Channel's Wonder Over Yonder designed Characters for a Videogame similar to the one featured in this video ????

"Annoying KZbinrs"...? How dare you call me a "KZbinr!" Gross. But anyway, not sure if you're having a bad or negative day, but you're not "kicked out," and I'm not backing out. I was hoping to live stream it, but couldn't get things set up, so it will be part of the next pick ups video I do before the end of the year.
@AcherRollz
@AcherRollz 6 жыл бұрын
@@ImportGamingFTW Ok don''t do that, making yourself look like the victim. You gave a date to announce the winner and even after that you on a past stream you said wouldn't be long after that. It's not hard to make a quick video saying who is the winner and I'm sorry if I sound like a bad guy it's just because I've experience and witness this over a dozen times and if it wasn't for people like me it would be forgotten in general. Also don't say I'm still in running, because we know the choice isn't random and honestly I'm fine with that. You have awesome and unique prizes compared to other youtubers who just game codes and other crap. Just do the right thing PS You upload and stream on youtube, don't pretend to be anything else
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 6 жыл бұрын
Who's making who look like a victim here? Not sure how you came to that conclusion, but I guess you misinterpreted my joke about being called a "KZbinr" as me being serious. Anyway, I don't think you sound or are a bad guy, you're probably a nice guy, and it seems like you've had some bad experiences with people on KZbin in the past. Well anyway, of course I would have preferred to have done the drawing sooner rather than later, unfortunately, I missed the deadline the first time. I didn't want to just make a quick video announcing the winners, since I wanted to do something "special" for it--and that doesn't mean rigging the results or whatever kind of cynical scenario you are insinuating. The winner will be a random pick from a pile of names, just like the last time I did a giveaway. I've had the names of all the entrees printed out, cut up, and in my Dragon Quest slime hat since the very end of June, and it's been in my closet since, and I see it almost every day, so it's been bugging me to get it done for awhile. And as far as the prizes being "awesome and unique," that's just because I want people to enjoy the same things I do, which is why I specifically picked up doubles of most of those items--to give to people as a token of appreciation for subbing to my channel. Anyway, TLDR, the giveaway is definitely not forgotten, just delayed--you'll see the results in the next pickup video, which should be out this month--and you're in the running, so good luck!

@KasumiKenshirou
@KasumiKenshirou Жыл бұрын
@@ImportGamingFTW Knowing what we now know about John K. since you're video was published, it really makes me wonder if his regret had something to do with him misunderstanding Japan's age of consent laws. As I understand it, while at the nation level it was absurdly low (i.e., the same age as the girls John K. groomed), this was overridden by the more reasonable laws at the prefecture level. (I've heard the national age has also been increased recently.)
