Why is My Glow Plug Warning Light On
Unlike some of the other warning lights on your car’s dashboard, the glow plug light is not an indicator of car troubles under normal circumstances. In fact, the glow plug symbol lights up often when we try to start a diesel car in cold weather conditions. The light should turn off in 5 - 10 seconds, or as soon as the car’s engine is hot enough to start. The same glow plug symbol turns into a glow plug warning light if it starts flashing or when the light stays on even after you have managed to start the car
What is the Glow Plug Warning Light
Diesel engines require a bit of additional heating in winter before they can be started. As this additional heat is supplied by glow plugs, a glow plug symbol lighting up at this stage only indicates that the plug inside is doing its job. When that same coil light on dash starts to flash or stays on even after the engine starts, that’s when it becomes a glow plug warning light. This coil-shaped warning light will be staying on or flashing as a warning that something is wrong with the glow plug, its timer, or perhaps the diesel engine itself
What Does it Mean When the Glow Plug Warning Light is Flashing
It could mean a lot of things, but in most cases, it means that the car won’t be able to start as long as your glow plug warning light is flashing. If the light starts to flash while you are driving, it indicates a sudden loss of power.
This means you will need to call a breakdown repair service or drive on to your nearest service centre or repair garage to have the car properly inspected. In older models, the car may start even when your glow plug symbol is flashing. This is a warning that you should not be driving the car without getting it checked first, even though you may still be able to do so for a while.
Which are the Common Reasons the Glow Plug Warning Light will Come On
Cold Weather
If the glow plug coil light on dash comes on when you are trying to start a diesel car in winter, it indicates that the weather is sufficiently cold for your car’s diesel engine to need some extra heating from the glow plug. It is only an indicator at this point and not a cause for concern. If the glow plug symbol refuses to turn off or if it starts blinking, that’s when you know the reason is no longer just the cold
Failing Glow Plug
If the glow plug light is staying on for longer than 10 - 15 seconds, it indicates a loss of power. The glow plug is losing its power efficiency and it will need to be changed soon. Neglecting to do so can lead to more serious car issues down the line
Worn-Out Glow Plug
In case the glow plug light stays on for a long time without facilitating ignition, a completely worn-out glow plug is likely to be the cause. In most instances, the coil warning light will start flashing after a few seconds, indicating a glow plug’s complete loss of power
Malfunctioning Sensor-Timer
A timer fitted with temperature sensors is responsible for turning a glow plug on and off as needed. If the attached sensors malfunction, the timer will be unable to turn the glow plug on or off at the right time. This can result in both underheating and overheating of the engine

@ZintleNtanta The diesel glow plug warning light on your dashboard typically indicates that the glow plugs are heating up to assist with starting the engine, especially in cold conditions. Here are some key points to consider: 👉 Normal Operation: In cold weather, it's normal for the glow plug light to come on when you turn the ignition key. It usually stays on for a few seconds while the plugs heat up, then goes off once they're ready and you start the engine. 👉 Prolonged Illumination: If the light stays on for an extended period after the engine has started, it could indicate an issue with one or more of the glow plugs or the glow plug control module. 👉 Intermittent Problems: If the light sometimes stays on longer than usual or comes on randomly, it might be a sign of a developing problem that should be checked. 👉 Diagnostics: Modern cars often provide specific error codes that can be read with a diagnostic tool. This can help pinpoint whether a glow plug or another related component is malfunctioning. Given that the light goes off once the car has started, it sounds like the system is functioning as intended. However, if you notice any starting issues, prolonged illumination of the glow plug light, or any other warning lights, it would be wise to have the car checked by a professional to ensure there are no underlying issues with the glow plugs or their control system. 👉 Happy to help!

I have no warning light yet the diagnostics picks up a p0683 code with pre heating fault indicating no feed back. Glow plugs changed, wires checked, relay changed. Really stumped now. There seems a lot of indication it could be a problem under the engine fuse box , wiring. Connectors and or the wiring itself.
@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 9 ай бұрын
@CapTango Possible Causes of Code P0683 Reasons for this DTC may include: Open or short circuit in the wiring from the PCM to the GPCM, to the bus, or from the bus to the glow plug. Defective glow plug Loose or corroded joints Unsuccessful GPCM Loose or corroded connections on the glow plug solenoid. Glow plug solenoid malfunction Insufficient battery charge on solenoid The P0670 code may accompany this code. This code indicates a problem with the harness from the GPCM to the solenoid. Diagnostic and repair stages Over the years, I've found this to be a common problem with diesels regardless of manufacturer. Because of the high amperage required to operate glow plugs and their tendency to burn out, I suggest starting with the most common problems. The GPCM uses low amperage and, although possible, is the least likely to fail. The solenoid is also rarely replaced. When you are dealing with high amperage, even the slightest loosening of the connection will create an arc and burn the connector. Inspect the wiring from PCM to GPCM. Continue down to the solenoid on the valve cover, from the solenoid to the bus and down to the glow plugs. Look for loose or corroded connectors. Disconnect the black and green electrical connectors from the GPCM. Inspect the connector for extruded pins and corrosion. Use an ohmmeter to test each terminal for a short to ground. Repair the short circuit if necessary. Apply dielectric grease to the pins and reconnect the harness to the GPCM. Inspect the positive battery and the GPCM connection on the glow plug solenoid. Make sure all wires are clean and secure. Inspect the glow plug tire. Check the connection of each wire on the bus and make sure it is clean and tight. Remove the wire from the glow plug and check for a short to ground. Using an ohmmeter, examine the glow plug terminal with one wire and ground the other. The glow plug is out of order if the resistance is not between 0.5 and 2.0 ohms. Check the resistance in the wiring from the glow plug to the busbar. Resistance should also be in the range of 0.5 to 2.0. If not, replace the wire. If the above does not help identify the problem, obtain your service manual and go to the page for the glow plug schematic. Look at the color and pin number for the GPCM power and power supply on the solenoid. Check these terminals according to the voltmeter directions. If there is no power to the GPCM, the PCM is faulty. If there is voltage across the GPCM, check the voltage from the GPCM to the solenoid. If there is no voltage to the solenoid, replace the GPCM.

@@Dashboardwarninglights wow. Thank you for all that information. As I replaced all 4 glow plug I checked all wires and connections to make sure they were good, all tested OK. The van was bad at starting before this but it now starts as it should . My main concern is now I've done all this work including cleaning our the egr valve and associated pipes, cleaned the mass and maf sensor air intake manifold. The van really smokes heavy, it now smokes worse than it did before . Before it smoked for a while then stopped after driving a few miles, now it just plumes out and doesn't stop even when the engine gets hot. ? It's nice that you replied as a lot of people don't bother. But at least I've got some additional pointers to follow now. I think I will start by removing the engine fuse box as I've seen people showing that under there it seems to be a weak point due to the heavy power going through the cables and melting the plastic block connector and burnt pins. Then maybe follow the path back to the pcm as it indicates s feedback problem. Many Thanks 👍

@@Dashboardwarninglights Just a quick update date. After replacing the glow plugs , making sure the glow plug bus bar was clean and in good order. Which found out someone had been there before me and made a horrible repair on one of them. Resting the pcm , I still had the p0368 code. Well after some deep searching, I found the the bus bar connection to the main loom was the problem, when it went back together, I belive one of the pins got pushed out instead of inserting into the female pin which would not ignite one glow plug, hence the plumes of smoke and the pre heating code still being there. So once reinserted and glue applied to the top of the connector to make sure it won't come out again, I did another diagnostic check on it , the same code pulled up so it cleared it. Turn the engine off left it for a while struck it back up, scanned it, no more pre heat code and no more smoking. So a minor relaps of concentration caused the problem. Will be double checking all connectors in future. 😃

My glow plug light comes on even after my truck has been running. (I’ll stop at the store and upon turning my truck back on the wait to start light comes on for longer than usual…. Should anyone know what May be occurring with my truck, please enlighten me. Thanks
@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 7 ай бұрын
@cathyortiz4111 Possible causes: 1. Faulty glow plugs: One or more glow plugs might be failing to heat up properly, causing the light to stay on. 2. Glow plug relay issue: The relay responsible for controlling the glow plugs could be malfunctioning, keeping them energized longer than necessary. 3. Damaged or faulty wiring could be sending incorrect signals to the glow plug system, resulting in the light staying on. 👉👉 What To Do When the Glow Plug Light Comes On After Starting STEP 1: Stop driving and let the engine cool down STEP 2: Check the glow plugs Locate the glow plugs on your engine and remove them using a wrench or socket. Check each plug for physical damage, such as cracks or breaks. Also, check the tip of the glow plugs for signs of wear or damage. Use a multimeter to test the electrical resistance of each glow plug. Typically, the resistance reading for a glow plug can range between 0.5 and 2.5 ohms, but it’s best to check the specifications to confirm the correct range for your engine. If you find any damaged or worn glow plugs or ones that do not meet the resistance specifications, replace them with new ones. Reinstall the glow plugs in their original locations and tighten them securely with a wrench or socket. Start your car and check to see if the glow plug light turns off. If the light stays on, follow the next step. STEP 3 : Repair broken or malfunctioning parts If you are unable to do it on your own, get your vehicle checked by a skilled technician to repair the faulty parts. STEP 4 : Reset the light Once you are done repairing, erase the faulty code from the scanner and restart your car to have a test drive. You’ll see the light is gone, and the problem has been resolved.

@geetsangeetnepal6457 The glow plug warning light in your Tata Mega XL van indicates an issue with the engine's glow plugs or the associated system. This warning light is crucial for diesel engines, as glow plugs are responsible for heating the air in the combustion chamber to aid in starting the engine, especially in cold conditions. Here are some potential reasons and steps you can take to diagnose and fix the problem: Potential Causes 👉 Faulty Glow Plugs: The most common reason for the glow plug warning light is one or more faulty glow plugs. 👉 Glow Plug Relay Failure: The relay that controls the glow plugs may be faulty. 👉 Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring can prevent the glow plugs from receiving power. 👉 Battery Issues: A weak or failing battery may not provide enough power for the glow plugs to function properly. 👉 ECU Fault: The engine control unit (ECU) may have a fault or need a reset. Diagnostic Steps 👉 Check Glow Plugs: Remove and inspect each glow plug. Test them using a multimeter to check for continuity. If a glow plug does not show continuity, it needs to be replaced. 👉 Inspect the Relay: Locate the glow plug relay and check it for any visible damage. Listen for a clicking sound when the ignition is turned on, which indicates that the relay is working. If you don’t hear the click, the relay might be faulty. 👉 Examine the Wiring: Inspect the wiring to and from the glow plugs and relay for any signs of damage or corrosion. Ensure all connections are secure and clean. 👉 Check the Battery: Test the battery voltage. A fully charged battery should read around 12.6 volts or higher. If the battery is weak, consider charging it or replacing it if necessary. 👉 Scan for Fault Codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to read any fault codes stored in the ECU. These codes can provide specific information about what might be wrong. After addressing the issue, you can also use the scanner to reset the warning light. Next Steps 👉 Replace Faulty Components: If any glow plugs, relays, or wiring issues are found, replace the faulty components. 👉 Clear Fault Codes: After repairs, clear any fault codes using the OBD-II scanner. 👉 Consult a Professional: If the problem persists, it might be necessary to consult a professional mechanic for a more thorough diagnosis. By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and address the issue causing the glow plug warning light in your Tata Mega XL van.

@user-Ir9dq6zn2c If the light doesn’t light up, the glow plug is bad and should be replaced. Easier is to use a professional glow plug tester device. There is some discussion about whether you should only replace the glow plugs that have gone bad, or if it is best to replace them all.
