A recent Cuban immigrant reacts to I Love Lucy for as its his FIRST TIME EVER WATCHING. Given that the show largely surrounds famous Cuban actor, Desi Arnez, this was a must! We asked our friend Alex ‪@imcurrentlyin‬, an AMAZING CUBAN VLOGER, to tell us what people think of the show in Cuba.

It’s because of Lucy’s refusal to do the show with out Desi that he was finally given the role despite the producers originally denying him the role. She had incredible instincts and was a comedic genius that completely changed Hollywood.

The reason we have streaming of shows is due in large part to Desi Arnaz, he came up with the idea to tape shows so they could be replayed in the future. No one thought that audiences would want to watch a show twice, until he showed them what an awesome idea it was. Also, the networks did not want to use Desi as the husband in the show because their marriage was considered an inter-racial one at the time, so Lucy and Desi used their own money and made a feature length movie entitled “The Long, Long Trailer to prove to the executives how very funny they would be together and that American audiences would love he two of them together. It worked and they became one of the most powerful couples in Hollywood. Love you too and I’m so glad you’re living your American dream together.

Lucy was a dancer before acting. She was even in a Three Stooges short in the 30s. Desi introduced the Conga Line dance to the US back in the 30s. TV execs originally didn't want Desi for the show because he was Latino. They wanted to cast an American actor. Lucy gave them an ultimatum that if he wasn't her husband in the show then she wouldn't do it. Lucy was a savvy business woman.

@@YoelAndMari They were moving the radio show “My Favorite Husband” staring Lucy over to TV and the TV producers didn’t think viewers would believe a marriage between a “red-headed” American to a Cuban band leader. But like others have said, Lucy insisted. They toured the country doing skits to promote it too. One skit was when Lucy acts like a seal which in in the show. Many of the first year episodes of I Love Lucy were actually episodes of My Favorite Husband.

Desi made the condition that they would own the reruns. He eventually sold them to CBS for what would be something like $ 70 million today. Then he used the money to buy RKO studios which was a huge amount of property.

I hope he learns about Desi... the entire concept of a "3 camera comedy" was his idea - filming the show from multiple angles, editing it together then putting it out, rather than live shows. When Lucy was pregnant and giving birth and needed some time off, he decided they could show some old episodes in its place... he invented the rerun. Lucy was the "face" of the operation, but he was the brains (though she made some smart decisions in helping make "Star Trek" and "Mission: Impossible" through their studio later) who truly invented how the last 60 years of television is made... to the point no one really wonders why we do it like this, just that it works so well, it is natural. But it wasn't until he made it happen. (PS - one of my favorite trivia bits is that Lucy was the star who got the show made... but he made himself a title character, as he is the "I" in "I Love Lucy")

@@olivegreenpants7153 She did, and overrode other execs who didn't want to do it. At that point, she and Desi had split, and she ran the company at that point. If you get into it, they still loved each other, IMHO, but couldn't live together. But if you watch a show like "The Big Bang Theory", which was a "standard" sitcom in production, most aspects came from Desi. I recommend Jess Oppenheimer's memoirs for a good behind the scenes of the show. But Desi, a Cuban immigrant in the 50s America where everyone on TV was white, did amazing things behind the scenes.

Desi was a pioneer in television who invented the way to shoot sitcom TV and he was a major television producer who create Desilu Productions which made Lucy very very rich when she sold it to Paramount. Desilu created some of the greatest shows on TV for years and some are still being shown regularly to this day. Desi was a brilliant businessman and creator.

My uncle is Keith Thibodeaux, who played Little Ricky from age 2 going forward. If you ever see a little boy speaking or playing the drums, that’s my uncle! He wrote a book called Life After Lucy and he and my aunt run a Christian ballet studio in Jackson, Mississippi called Ballet Magnificat! They just opened a satellite school in Curitiba, Brazil! Wow, that’s cool! Back in the 1980s, I saw your uncle perform with David and the Giants at my church. I was surprised and excited to learn “Little Ricky” became a drummer with a Christian rock band.

Funny enough, I am a redhead in a mixed race relationship with a Latino man. My family was always openly against interracial relationships. But I grew up watching I Love Lucy re-runs. I’ve seen every episode multiple times. The couple’s cultural differences were sometimes poked fun at, but it never felt in bad taste. They were portrayed as a glamorous, loving family. Lucy and Ricky openly challenged racism in the 50s, and for me in the 90s and early 2000s. They were an example for me to think differently from the people around me. Even today mixed race and mixed cultural relationships are not well-portrayed in media and sadly racism still exists. But Lucy and Desi really made their mark and revolutionized TV and representation in so many ways. They gave me faith that my partner and I would find acceptance, and we did! Forever grateful to them.

There are interviews on KZbin with Dezi and Lucy's daughter, Lucy Arnaz. I believe she said Dezi's family had to flee Cuba leaving everything behind. Dezi performed to help pay bills. He was the onewho came up with the Conga line. Dezi also created the idea of "reruns" to give Lucy some time for maternity leave. Also, Lucille Ball is the reason Star Trek became a T.V. series. The pilot bombed, but she had a feeling about the show and gave them the break they needed. Otherwise, no Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy (Bones), Lt. Ohura, Scotty, etc. would ever have been.

Desi and Lucy started their own studio named DesiLu Studios. They were the ultimate Hollywood power couple. So many movie stars of the day would cameo on I Love Lucy. Usually as themselves working on a project with "Ricky". Then he would always be afraid to introduce them to Lucy because he knew how crazy she would act. But in real life - they were a very powerful couple and very smart. Honesty, I'm not that old and Desi and I Love Lucy made me want to learn about Cuba. I followed a one month special on Sirius XM of replays of the Lucy Radio Talk show in what they now call the first podcast in Hollywood. She was instrumental in interviewing the stars of those days, this was before Johnny Carson etc on the late tv formats

I love this! Fun fact about Lucy, she is actually a VERY good dancer and got her start in that as a professional before going into comey. She is great at faking being a bad dancer because she isn’t and is just using her comedy skills. I ADORE both of them! Desi Arnaz may be known more for I Love Lucy, but when you actually look at his history, the man is an icon. He had two successful orchestras (one before World War II and one after), appeared in several movies (one of which is where he meet and fell in love with Lucille Ball), and was the executive producer of several TV shows. Hell, he even found away for an audience to be on a sound stage while filming in order to keep the 'filmed before a live studio' audience vibe for I Love Lucy when people said it couldn't be done.

Desi Arnaz was a bandleader before he was on TV. He made his first recordings in 1939. Both he and Lucy were in movies before they were on TV. Desi and Lucy were great behind the camera as well as in front of it. They created the three-camera set-up that's used in so many TV shows even today. They also understood the value of syndication rights. I Love Lucy was on TV in syndicated re-runs for years after the show was first aired, and since their own production company kept the rights to the show, they raked in the dollars for many years. They probably made more money from syndication than they did from the show's original run.

My Cuban family loved that show. Especially since Lucy was such a Master at physical comedy. And my family's English was not the so great. You definitely have to show him episodes where he gets mad and starts yelling in Spanish it's the funniest thing ever on television. "The Long, Long Trailer" is one of my all-time favorite comedy movies. It was hilarious when it came out and is hilarious today. (If you want a couple of recommendations for movies with a similar vibe, though different stars, check out "Bringing Up Baby" starring Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn and either "It Happened One Night" or "Arsenic and Old Lace" which are both directed by Frank Capra -- who went on to direct the holiday classic "It's a Wonderful Life").

Great video! I loved this idea. And Desi Arnaz - what an icon and a legend. He also changed the pay structure for producers and actors - changed not only show formats, but how deals are structured and paid. He shook things up quite a bit in Hollywood, that’s for sure. He owned his own content. The studios did not want too many individual moguls like him around. This was an awesome video guys. 🙂

My parents were from Sonora Mexico. My Dad came with his family in the mid 50s then my Dad and Mom met in Hermosillo and got married and came back to California. Desi Arnaz started his band straight out of high school in Florida in the mid 30's. He and his band, actually referred to as an "orchestra", found immediate success in Florida. Being quickly discovered by some big stars, he went to New York and became big time successful, several years before meeting the already famous Lucy in 1940. They were a fantastic team.

In order to fit in with 1950s social customs, Lucy always had to act absent--minded and ridiculous as part of the tv script and Desi had to be the smart one and the dominant man in the marriage. In real life off stage, Lucy was much more intelligent and business savvy. She did ninety nine percent of the business negotiations for Desilu studio but she had to pretend that Desi did most of the business negotiations just because he was a man.

Lucy didn't act absent-minded and ridiculous because of requirements of 1950's social customs. She was the comedienne and Desi was the straight man. She was the comic talent. Silly and ridiculous is what her kind of comedians do. In the Honeymooners, a situation comedy of the same vintage, it was the men who were the silly ones and the women who were sensible.

This was adorable! Desi Arnaz has an incredible history - his family was actually a part of the government - they were very wealthy and had to flee the country when the government fell. They also were the family that owned and operated Bacardi rum! He came to America and played the bongos to help his family. He’s the reason the conga became such a hit dance here! And then he went on to dominate the television networks with Desilu Productions. You should definitely check out more of I Love Lucy - they’re such a riot together and it never stops amazing me that they were the first “interracial” marriage on tv. He actually reminds me SO much of my grandfather - a Sicilian man, but something in the essence of them was the same. LOVED this video so much!

My family grew up on "I Love Lucy" and when there were marathons of it during the holidays we would sit around the tele with tons of food and watch it for hours! Did not matter if we had seen the episodes a million times we still laughed at every moment! They were a iconic couple and I was so sad to find out later how unhappy their marriage became in the end. But they changed television history and their studio gave us some of the most iconic TV shows like Star Trek, Mission Impossible, and The Untouchables to name a few... Please react to more I love Lucy!. Being half Dominican when yoel said the dancing "it's in our blood" it gave me chills because it's true. This show was so big for Latin culture period and it's heartbreaking that Cubans don't know about Desi or the show. He was a culture ICON in Hollywood..him and her were considered Hollywood royalty. May I suggest the book "The Old Man and the Sea" by one of the most famous American novelists in history? Ernest Hemingway wrote some of the biggest classics in American literature, lived in Key West, Fla (his home is now a tourist attraction). He loved Cuba and visited there a lot, pre-Revolution. His final novel "The Old Man and the Sea" was written in 1951 and is a short story (thin book, quick read) about an old Cuban fisherman and his epic battle with a large fish. The book won a Pulitzer for fiction and Nobel Prize for Literature. You'll love it!

I love you guys! I grew up in South Florida, where Cuban and American cultures blend together-- it's a beautiful combination. I really enjoy Yoel's reaction videos. It makes me realize how much we take for granted in America. I pray for change to happen in the Cuba / US relation so that I can visit in person someday. My advice to Yoel about learning new English words: avoid looking at the written word as your first step. It will often confuse you. Listen to a word as pronounced first by native speakers and repeat it many times until you are confident that you can say it correctly and also understand the word in context before you try to read it. English spelling cannot be taken literally. There are more exceptions than rules it seems. Keep up the good work guys!!!

Yes. Desi Arnaz literally revolutionized TV because he was one of the first producers to record the series, then aire it in syndication which means in reruns. It is also thanks to Desilu productions that we have Star Trek which became one of the largest franchises in TV and movie history. My favorite episodes is the the Vitameatavegamin Girl that you showed, and the Great Train Robbery. But the entire series is great and full of laughs. Another funny show I think you would enjoy is the Carol Burnett Show which was a variety show with weekly guest actors and singers. Lots of funny skits in that show such as Mama's Family, Mr. Tudball and Mrs. Wiggins, Went with the Wind, and As the Stomach Turns.

My Uncle came from Cuba many many years ago and married into my family. I was around 13 when he came here I am now 48 so he has been here for a long time. Spending time with him and my aunt down in Hollywood FL near Miramar he would take me to small bodegas and introduced me to Cuban Cuisine that is out of this world. He became a natural citizen 20 years ago and I still love every chance I can to see him and talk with him. The Cuban Culture truly is beautiful and I pray someday all Cubans can enjoy the life he has and you are now having. God Bless

Lucille was a perfectionist, and would rehearse a scene several times and fine tuning it as she went. Her show without Desi "The Lucy Show" was also very popular. Desi was an innovator. Desi came up with the 3 camera studio system that is still used today. He was also an avid womanizer, which eventually led to their break up. I Love Lucy has been in syndication for over 60 years, and is still played on stations all over the world. NOTHING has lasted as long, or has been as popular.

I was born in the mid 60s. These shows were on all the time when I was a kid. I've probably seen every episode at least twice. Watching this video showing some of the old clips, I was in tears laughing as if they were brand new to me. I'm a white guy married to a Puerto Rican woman.... We are a great match together.
