Have you checked Calder Hannan's papers? He often talks/write about having a different perception of the rhythm of a song. His talk "Rhythmic Parallax in Car Bomb's Blackened Battery" is super cool.

This exact discussion is really interesting and causes me some sort of option paralysis in my own writing. I wrote a riff years and years ago, and I once started showing it to the band I was in at the time - the drummer started playing a really straight feeling beat under it that captured the hypnotic groove PERFECTLY and made it feel like a looping tightening spiral that suddenly releases it's tension... but I myself can't figure out how he was counting it to give it the magic feel he found. 😅 I can't just ask him because it was 13 years ago. It has been pretty humbling, and made me realise my compositional skillset is just... well... incomplete. I can't marry my ideas with their best possible vibes.

If you could investigate the chorus of Childish Japes' "After You're Born" song, I'm still scratching my head on it even after that many years!

Yo I love that song ! If I remember correctly, it's a12/8 or 4/4 in triplets song which opens it up to MANY rhythmic shenanigans hahaha I think GTR and bass are playing groups of 4 and the snare moves to a syncopated 2+ thing. I'll listen again !

@@YogevGabay Fun! I tried counting and keeping the beat but the transition between the verse and chorus always confuses my brain. A song really well made for sure!

The second Yogev mentioned it being in 5/4 with 16th notes, I had a feeling it would be 4/4 in quintuplets… To me the snare is what gives the groove away, I hear it as a quintuplet backbeat, I just can’t hear it in 5/4 (maybe it’s from meshuggah but I always default to hearing these syncopated parts as 4/4 when I can)

I heard it how he did but guessed it was off-set by a 16th when he wrote out the hi hat pattern. Pretty cool how slippery rhythms can be and how everything changes with a small shift in perspective, keeps them interesting no matter how much you learn about the topic.

It's pretty weird. I happened to hear this one "right", but I'm probably the only person in the world who hears Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" with constantly shifting time signatures due to being unable to hear the main hook as syncopated. Because I hear it unsyncopated, but I hear the verse vocals correctly, I have to constantly slip around where the 1 is, and I've been unable to train myself to hear it correctly.

i recorded a whole demo with a similar misconception on a guitar track and mysteriously made it work, shifting the WHOLE SONG a quarter note. Now that I understand the original intention of my guitarist it is unlistenable.

For what it's worth, I don't think your first interpretation is 'wrong', Yogev. Hearing the phase of a beat is entirely subjective - we can come up with general rules that predict where people hear a beat, but they will never be 100% accurate because this is not an intrinsic component of the music itself, even if the people who write or perform the music have a particular interpretation in mind. This song happens to have conflicting signals about where the beat is. In some songs, using conflicting signals is intentional. Consider Radiohead's 'Videotape', whose main piano part is just quarter notes in 4/4. But gradually, as the song develops (and this is way more apparent in the live versions), it becomes clear that these notes are all anticipating the beats by a sixteenth note. It's not 'wrong' to hear these notes on the beat - it's expected that the audience will do this, to create an eventual sense of 'eureka' when the other interpretation is made clearer.

Sigh… “super wrong” is a bit much. By admission, the tune was developed by a misinterpretation… but for the better. Don’t be a jerk - either the groove is deliberately ambiguous (in which case I’m here for it), or your idea was poorly communicated. eg. if you need 100% white light, equal parts RGB is (to borrow parlance) “super wrong”, but from a distance it’ll get the job done. But great tune… and great work Yogev, as always! Twice in this case!

@@YogevGabay Oh I don't doubt that at all. But rather than "super wrong" (which subjectively & ironically could be argued as itself being wrong), how's about saying "ooh, so close", or perhaps calling it "a little out of focus". Double irony... I'm focusing on two words, and perhaps losing sight of the bigger picture. The world is still a better place because of the original piece & this video!
