My headcannon regarding dwarves is that dwarf women culturally braid their hair forward. So if you're a human taking a quick glance you might mistake a dwarven woman (especially in armor or heavy clothing) for a dwarven man. And if you're an elf, you'd probably call a dwarven woman a man because as we all know, elves are pricks.
