I've actually paid close attention to the canon. He was born Nicholas Grizwald, or just Nick Grizwald. At some point he changed his name to John Steel because, as Lewis puts it, he was so embarassed by his father. It seems that some time between YogsQuest 7 and YogsQuest 9, John Steel changed his first name back to Nick.
