For me, as someone who worked as a videojournalist for a news affiliate for nearly a decade, I will lean in favor of a camcorder anyday when talking about video projects. Ergonomics, smooth zooming, and the fact I don't have to switch out lenses during a shoot is a huge plus. I do own a mirrorless camera that shoots in 4k. In fact, I shot video with it yesterday. Unfortunately, I needed a slow push-in and snap zoom that I could not accomplish without a camcorder. At the end of the shoot I was mumbling to myself, "Shoulda brought a camcorder." I love my canon mirrorless for the fantastic photos it takes, but I think I'll be sticking with the camcorder on video shoots. 🤷♂️

MSRP and street price, in reality, they are only $200 apart ($600 vs $800). By the time you accessorize the camera to be able to do what the camcorder can do out the box, you have to add a telephoto lens and that's an additional $1,000 so now you're up to $1,600. For the person who needs 600mm of zoom, that reason alone disqualified the G85 with the kit lens for starters. Also, why dual cameras? So the shooter can record themselves while recording the event they're shooting (for example, hunters and someone taking part in a motorsport). There are instances where that information would be important to the person taking the video. You're comparing a video camera to a photo camera. The camcorder will always beat the photography camera in shooting video and the photography will always beat the video camera in shooting photos. Since we're talking video here, the camcorder doesn't overheat, can run for half a day compared to the camera's 1 hour on one battery, has better ergonomics for shooting handheld allowing one's arm to act as a gimbal for smoother footage, there is no need to switch lenses for an on-the-fly shot, right out the box, the camcorder can shot clear images 100 feet away which is important for wildlife video, the flip screen is far more convenient for shooting oneself and it's a much more compact package. You can carry a camcorder in a small pod + 2 batteries in the size that a 600mm photography camera alone takes up and be able to shoot all day with that package without having to stop to let it cool down and to rig up an external power bank or battery source for continuous shooting which you can't do (again) because it over heats. You have to stop shooting with it to let it cool down. In the end, it's an apples to oranges comparison. It's like comparing a pickup truck to an electric commuter car. They're good for what they do in their own respective fields. But for video? The camcorder will always beat the photography camera. It's just better in every way. For the record, I got my Panasonic on sale for $600 from a reputable seller (Adorama) and it came with a SanDisk 32GB Extreme SD Card, an SD card case, a camera bag, a card reader, 3 filters and a lens cleaning kit (brush, dust blower, cloths, cleaning solution, etc...) and they extended my 1 year warranty to 3 years. It was already on sale for $700, but they gave me another $100 off on top of that. The accessories alone were worth a good 50 bucks so in the end, it came out to $550.

I have the vx981 and it is the low end of all my professional equipment but it is a great a great camera.. one little trick which makes it virtually non-stop in terms of batteries is that the proprietary charging wire is USB on the other side. That means you can simply plug it into a USB portable charger which I mount on my tripod with velcro if I need portability. The camera will run and charge at the same time for limitless duration. If you have access to ac, there is no limit because it directly charges the battery at the same time you use the camcorder. The quality is excellent. For shooting in crowds you can use boom type hookups because it is so light and the video quality is outstanding. I've used mine for shooting everything from interviews to sports and it does a beautiful job

Sorry but Ive owned the GX85 and now own the Panasonic VX981, which is the same as this 991 without the twin camera design. The GX85 is notorious for its terrible AF. It's super slow contrast based AF, it's awful. The 891 blows it away. That alone makes the GX85 a no go. The 5 axis IBIS plus OIS hybrid system in the 891 is excellent. Not to mention you can't even get a 30-626mm f/1.8-f/3.6 lens to match the excellent Leica lens in the 891 and even if you could, it would be thousands of dollars and huge. The 891 is the better camera for video.

#facts I own a Panasonic VX1 which is a 981 without the dual cameras too. For a G85 to be able to shoot out to 600mm (100 feet), someone would have to spend $1000 more on a telephoto lens when a camcorder comes out the box ready to shoot that and I've personally gotten some BEAUTIFUL footage of a full moon one night ("Full Moon Phase @ Deer Camp" on my channel). I use mine for hunting & wildlife videos. NEVER loses focus, the stability is insane on it and it's just like a point & shoot camera, but on steroids. You just flip it open and start recording and forget about it, unlike my DSLR's that used to overheat, lose focus, need constant adjustments in changing light, it was horrible. I "stopped" like shooting video. It was too frustrating, too much work. But the camcorder was a godsend. My buddy who has half a million subs did beautiful work with his G85, but he had to spend a ton of money on lenses to do it and it takes him a weekend to shoot a 30 minute video. I don't have that patience! LOL

For me, the ability to zoom smoothly when covering sports or equestrian events is essential.... Not available on most dslr and other cameras. Whist there are some limited power zooms for micro 4/3 their ranges mean they are not always suitable. Sony has some power zooms for apsc size sensor cameras but for me, the benefit of a long zoom from about 26mm in a camcorder is a winner....
@YOLOnyc Жыл бұрын
Very valid point - I've got a power zoom Sony lens, the range is very limited.
@Wolf-mt Жыл бұрын
Great video, and thanks for the in-depth comparison. I can't argue with the low-light quality comparison between the 4/3 sensor in the the GX85 and 1/2.3 sensor in the Camcorders, but I think there are still good reasons someone might choose a camcorder. I have the HC-WXF1 which is essentially the same as your HC-WXF991 and chose it for two specific uses; wildlife videos while hiking and youth sports. If those are among your primary uses, the zoom range is at the top of your feature list. A 3x zoom just isn't going to capture facial expressions after a soccer goal or see the steamy breath of a bugling bull elk on a cold morning from 400 yards away. For an apt comparison for this use, you would need to include a telephoto lens on the GX85, but that would obliterate any price advantage or size advantage. And for sports, you're constantly zooming in and out, and while a 3x zoom might be fine for indoor sports in a small gym, the mechanics of zooming in most mirrorless cameras was not designed for video and is often jerky (motorized lenses), difficult to make smooth, and cumbersome to coordinate while following movement (manual lens ring). You also talked about ease of use which can be valuable for the reasons you mentioned, but for hiking in particular, the time it takes to go from spotting an animal to capturing video is often critical. I don't know how long it would take to get video going on a GX85 when you're in a hurry to capture a moose as it's loping across a small opening, but you demonstrated how fast it is on the camcorder; just open the screen. In those cases where you need to get filming quickly, image stabilization also makes a big difference in quality because you're often shooting off-hand. I don't know about stabilization in the GX85, but I would assume with a 24x zoom lens equivalent you would need a tripod (more time to set up), but stabilization is quite good in the WXF1 (the Sony AX53/43 is exceptional). You showed the twin camera thingy, which I have never used before on my camcorder either, but there is a different twin camera mode where you can use your cell phone camera as the picture-in-picture second camera. I point my cell phone camera at the scoreboard of a game and can then bring the score and game clock into the video by tapping a button on the screen. Gimmicky for sure, but nice for this purpose. You talked a lot about power and I was also annoyed at first that the power connector on the Camcorder was a barrel connector, but it does go to a USB-A on the other end of the cord. You can power the entire camcorder from a USB power bank just like you were doing with the GX85. But even better, with the camcorder being powered from the power bank, you can swap the camcorder battery while recording; you don't lose power. So if I'm in the middle of recording something and realize my battery is about to die, I can simply connect the power bank and keep going. And if I'm worried about the power bank dying, I can swap out the camcorder battery and unplug the power bank. But I think you may have both positively demonstrated and simultaneously overlooked one very obvious reason for choosing a camcorder for video; auto focus. It is getting better in mirrorless cameras, but every time you struggled to get a closeup to focus in this video, I couldn't help but thinking "I bet he never had that problem when he was using the HC-WXF991".
@YOLOnyc Жыл бұрын
You've made lots of great points. Auto focus is poor on Lumix mirrorless cameras, but on Sony the a6x00 series it is so good that it defies science - I've got an a6100 and a6400 that are my favorite cameras to use, and are excellent all around. As you noted, zooming in close on mirrorless can require very expensive lenses, however the image quality is so much greater that you do have the option to zoom digitally in post (while editing after filming) that would not look good digitally zoomed using camcorder footage. If you don't need extended length continuous shots, your type of filming may benefit from a 4k superzoom camera - I've got 3 of them that have traveled the world with me, and they're fantastic toys, and can capture a smile close up from at least several hundred feet away. The Nikon B700 is my favorite, the digital stabilizer is excellent and you can handhold the camera if you lean or support your hand, at full 60x 1440mm optical zoom. The big downside is the small sensor and 4gb maximum file size (7-8 minutes). Your scoreboard trick with the phone is neat. If it were me filming, I'd just set up a 2nd fixed camera and edit it in afterward, but obviously that's more laborious.

@YOLOnyc Жыл бұрын
Yes, but the trade off is in lack of simplicity. I typically film with mirrorless cameras (excellent in low light and color reproduction) attached to a gimbal for the ultimate handheld stability. For strong zoom, I'll take with me several lenses based on what I anticipate shooting - changing them is a genuine set back, but the alternative (long range zoom lens) is extremely expensive. Most cameras ship with a "kit lens" that zooms to middle range lengths, add a prime lens for ultra wide and another for ultra far (aka portrait lens), and you have something for everything but changing the lenses gets very annoying.

Can you please recommend any camcorder or camera or compact camera for this particular use ? Thanks
@YOLOnyc Жыл бұрын
$400 is insufficient for the ideal choice which would be a used Sony a6100 with "fast" lens (with a low F-stop number), the lower the F-stop (aka "faster" the lens) the better it will be for shooting in low-light - that is probably about $500-600 in today's used-market. Within $400 there will be tradeoffs such as 4K without a time-limit, but using the same Sony lenses you might get within budget a Sony a6000. For about $200 used, you should be able to find a fast lens on the older Sony NEX-series cameras - I have a Nex-5N that I bought used a few years ago as a toy for $100 with lens and it is amazing, although today there are better options like the Nex-6. Panasonic Micro-4/3 uses a smaller sensor than the Sony cameras, so the low-light image quality will be inferior, albeit still better than just about all of the camcorder options out there from any brand.

Can You zoom in with the mirrorless? Do You have mic in or headphones out?
@YOLOnyc6 ай бұрын
Mirrorless cameras have options for zoom-lenses and prime (non-zoom) lenses. Prime lenses usually have much larger apertures which make the image substantially better and brighter. Never seen a headphone-jack on a modern mirrorless (does not mean it does not exist) but almost-all of them have a mic-in.
@jackraymond50094 ай бұрын
Points you haven't made: 1. The camcorder has both an external mic socket and a headphone socket. Sound is very important for video. The GX80/GX85 has neither, so you have to pay for and carry some kind of external recording device (at least another $100?) to get good sound for serious videos. 2. The screen on the GX80/GX85 doesn't let you see yourself when recording, which means that just to get framing, you have to a) sync with the Lumix app b) use an external monitor or c) get one of those mirror boxes which sit in the hotshoe mount, which are all clunky solutions that get old fast. 3. Few people will want to steal your camcorder. 4. It's fairly easy to hold a camcorder to do smooth pans and zooms. 5. It's impossible to do a smooth zoom with that kit lens on the camera, nifty though it is, nor can you even focus manually. The lens on the camcorder allows you to do smooth zooms and is suited for wildlife and sports and even shows and concerts, which otherwise would require very long, heavy, and expensive lenses. Also, you can set it to manual focus on that Panasonic series, or set the focus ring to control zoom or aperture instead. 6. There is an infrared night mode on the camcorder as well, also useable for wildlife or effect. In other words, what you're paying for with the camcorder is an amazing superzoom lens and an all-in-one solution for video at long-range plus vlogging/filming yourself. If the sensor were bigger, the lens would have to be bigger and the price would go up astronomically. If you want to do atmospheric shots at night for extensive colour grading, I would get something else, but it wouldn't be the GX80, which is an all-in-one versatile solution for photos and video, but needs various accessories (audio/video/other lenses) if you want to get the absolute best out of it. The best thing about the GX80 is its portability, that you can stick it in a bag with a couple more lenses, without even noticing the size or weight, and that it can take 4k video for a relatively low price.

If you shoot static videos ,mirrorless cameras have far better image quality ,especially at low light. If you shoot action videos ,walking etc., you d better buy gopro or sth. Maybe they deliberately neglected camcorders and did not develop.

Vx1 for me is a much better choice. The stabe is stellar and 600mm zoom is so handy. The gx85 needs a large 300mm lens to be equivalent. For me the vx-1 is a perfect b-roll camera for grabbing many different shots when i don’t have my g9ii with a 400mm lens (800mm full frame equivalent) which I love but don’t always have in the car with me. My vx-1 (dead now) used to live in the drink holder of my car.

I think the euro spec may have the time limit, but the USA models don't. If yours does, then you bought an import/international model; "gray goods" sellers often sell these heavily discounted without any factory warranty.

G85 is $600 and the 991 is $800, both on Amazon so the difference is really only $200. But if you want to shoot out as far as the camcorder can, you'll need to spend another $1000 on a telephoto lens for the camera when the camcorder can already shoot out with it's 626mm lens.

The GX85 has 5-axis IBIS stabilization in the body. If you use a zoom lens then it will zoom, but I do agree that you would not call that "proper zoom" like a camcorder or lens with electronic zoom control.

Hello, Great Video... As far is i know the price difference has to do with the video recording time and and import tax... A camera that can do video up to 30min is imported and taxated as a (photo)camera...if a (photo)camera does over 30 minutes it will be taxated more because they tax it as a Video camera .so would pay a much higher price for even a simple Photo camera.

@YankeeWoodcraft11 ай бұрын
How do you "figure out" the less run time per battery or limited zoom of the kit lens? 😂 Oh, that's right. You spend $1000 more on a 600mm lens and buy 3 more batteries at $45 a pop to compare to the camcorder's 1 battery that comes with it and the built in 600mm lens. It's apples to oranges. For those who take pictures while it's dark, they need a photography camera. For those who take videos, they need a camcorder. Nobody expects a fish to be able to climb a tree very well or a wolve to do deep sea diving. .
