This was my first time watching one of your videos, but it was very clear and concise. Very helpful. I actually went and bought the Steam version of this just to be able to access it more easily for going against other players, but if I like it enough on there, I might spring for one of the physical boxes.

An honest thought about this game: I think these games are just a bit too close to being a medium game to allow me to quickly pickup the game and casually play it with friends. Games like this you will need to play often or revisit very frequently. I think if I showed a friend this game and we played Friday night then we didn't play it until the next weekend I would need to relearn the whole game and I can't imagine a universe where my friends would put up with basically relearning this game a couple times a month or every other month. In a universe where I play mtg with my friends pretty often I think they will always want to play that instead. Which I feel is a shame because the art and flow of this game is pretty unique and fun. Unfortunately the level of rules complexity is just beyond the threshold for a pick up and play game.
@mysticjuicer0110 жыл бұрын
I'd say that's about right. It's a lot to take in and set-up for your first game, though it uses as many intuitive elements as possible, I think. And each card specifies on it how it can be used in combat, what it beats, and what you get for winning. 1. Combo normals into next consecutive normals. 2. Starters can only "start" combos. "Enders" can't combo into more cards. "Can't Combo" is self-explanatory. "Linkers" let you link moves. 3. Game structure is based on rock paper scissors. 4. Turn structure is fairly simple. When I'm teaching someone to play, I always leave out the Jokers/bluffing stuff for the first game, just to keep things relatively simple.

Yes, this is a bit more involved than what one might think of as a casual game.

- Rodney, thank you so much for making a video about Yomi. Can’t wait to see the match up between you and Luke. - I know people have concerns about the game’s complexity and as with many games playing a round or two really helps establish the basics (hence the beauty of your channel). For anyone wanting to try it out I recommend heading over to www.fantasystrike.com/game-yomi and giving it a go. - I agree with Simon’s response to Tranz, I almost never play with jokers and the knock down rules until both myself and my partner have gone through and learned both of the decks. - Quick question: do you use a teleprompter/cue cards for your videos?
@WatchItPlayed10 жыл бұрын
I write a script, but I don't use a teleprompter. We recorded the first game play episode today. Hope to have it out this week!

Question: my boyfriend and I are new to this game... is there a minimum amount of cards that players are supposed to have at all times or can a player theoretically end up with no cards in their hand at the start of a round and have to rely on drawing cards through combat and/or through the draw phase?
@WatchItPlayed7 жыл бұрын
Hey Nicoile, there is no minimum number of cards. Of course, the fewer cards you have, the fewer options you have. You can almost think of this as your fighter getting exhausted.
@bczpkhny10 жыл бұрын
Hey Rodney! I've become a recent fan of your shorts and they're all great, in-depth pieces and explanations. Me and my girlfriend have even watched some together to understand Mice and Mystics. Great editing and great effort into these videos and we appreciate it a lot. Anyway, I kickstarted this board game and we got confused about some things that you might be able to clear up. Are the special abilities (reaction, discard, combat reveal, etc) side-specific? Meaning, does the special ability apply to both ends of the card or just the one it is right-side up to? And do the cost of cards (discarding 2 Aces for the True Power of Storms attack for example) still go through even if the player didn't win out in the combat reveal? And just to make sure and confirm, normal (meaning numbered, non-specialty attack cards) can combo into consecutive normal numbered attack cards, 6 - 7 -8 for example, even without the linker specialty attack card? If so, linkers are essentially used only in specialty cards, right? I think a quick side-tutorial for the Master Midori deck would help us out too. We had difficulty understanding his rules (do players stay in his dragon form, how exactly to get into it, etc.) Thank you so much for the great work. Keep it up and hopefully you get some more traffic for this great channel.
@mysticjuicer0110 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hope I can answer some of your questions! 1. Are special abilities side specific. This depends. If an ability requires that you play it from your hand rather than reveal it in combat, then it isn't side specific. Some cards are side specific; these cards will usuall specify in the ability text whether they apply only to the attack side, for example. If you look at Lum's Ace, you'll see the ability starts with "if you successfully dodge an attack with [this ace]..." 2. You always have to pay Ace costs, even if you don't win combat. For example, if I play Grave's True Power of Storms Ace side, no matter what my opponent reveals, I need to discard two aces. It's part of what makes Aces high risk, high reward. 3. You're correct, normals can always "link" into the consecutive higher normal. Linkers help you to combo even if you don't have a normal chain. You may hit with a 6 attack, then use a linker to combo into another 6, for example. 4. Midori is a little complicated, yeah! :D Here are the basics: his face cards have a green coloured side, this side will specifically say that you can't use it unless you're in dragon form. To enter dragon form, you must play a 2 from your hand (not as a combat card, but right out of your hand after the draw step) and place it beside your character card. You are now in dragon form (and can play all his green-side special and super moves). You lose dragon form if you are thrown, or if you combat reveal a normal attack or throw, or a non-green special move. You can still follow up dodges and dragon moves (the green side moves) with normal attacks without losing your dragon form. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions, and hope you continue to enjoy the game!
@bczpkhny10 жыл бұрын
Simon Braendli 1. Okay, that makes sense. 2. Got it, that's fair. 3. So, in theory, I can combat reveal a successful normal 5, then use a linker, then go to a normal 2? 4. This does but I wish it was printed somewhere more clearly for him. I guess it was online. Thanks.
@mysticjuicer0110 жыл бұрын
bczpkhny 3. Exactly right. Linkers are the most flexible of all the move types. You can put them at the start of a combo, finish a combo with them, or stick them in the middle. You could hit with a linker, and then follow it up with as many linkers as you have combo points for. :D 4. If you're looking for some resources like character guides, a write up of all a character's moves, and general strategy, I highly recommend you check out the resources available online! I found this review because one of the people on the Yomi forum linked to it. :) Character Guides - www.fantasystrike.com/guide/index.php/Main_Page Guides and Strategy - www.fantasystrike.com/forums/index.php?threads/updated-character-guides.9283/

WOW!!!!! Rodney you are the best teacher out there, I watch you all the time. But, My head hurts and I am totally confused. You lost me buddy. Way too many rules on this and that, if you do this you can do that but not this. The print on the cards is so tiny and the colors for the small words is not good for a color blind people. Way too many symbols on the cards that are confusing. I know that some people love this game and that's wonderful, But Not for me. Combat games are fun but this has way too many options that are mind blowing. I am sure if I tried to play it with a friend who knew it well, he could teach me slowly and maybe I would get it, but I think I will pass on buying this game. Too much work. I am curious to see you and Luke play it, so I will watch the rest of the video's, maybe it will help me. Who knows?

I think seeing some turns will help clarify a lot of it. There are little outside cases that need to be included in a comprehensive instructional, like we provide, but on the whole I think you may find it easy to follow, once it's being shown.
