I’ve been gaming for half as much, and man, it sickens me how much of these AAA games, among other types of games, focus on squeezing you for every last dime. NFTs are another rancid ingredient in the soup of bad decisions being propelled by the gaming industry. Unacceptable.
@GameDevNerd
@GameDevNerd 2 жыл бұрын
It's not NFTs that are the problem, it's the AAA megacorporations. They're intentionally misusing NFTs to piss everyone off and try to sway opinion against them. They want you to think it's nothing but a way to charge you for bad collectible art, when it's actually a revolutionary way to use data in computer science.

@King of The Zinger that's going to be prohibitively expensive, even to hire junior devs from a AAA studio, and they normally don't treat their devs bad at all. I work for a AA size studio (under 1,000 employees) and they treat me very, very well and respectfully, but I have indeed heard some horror stories from the bigger corporate studios. A junior at one of those big studios is probably making $70K per year, and seniors are making double (or even more). A tech lead can be earning like $250K+ or sometimes $400K+ at the largest AAA studios. Your best bet is probably finding really talented indy developers or people who have left the industry but still want to have fun working on an interesting game, but it's up to you to get an interesting project started that will capture their interest before you ask them to work on it. Of course if you have loads of money you can do whatever you want, but I'm assuming you don't have millions in cash to throw around. If you want to have your own successful studio, learn every part of the development process: programming & software engineering, graphics, data, 2D and 3D artwork, technical art & shaders, video, music & audio, writing, marketing & advertising, etc. Pick one thing to be *really* good at and specialize in. My suggestion is to pick programming & software engineering, because it's the most important and fundamental skill and the industry and indy culture both have a serious shortage of good programmers and an abundance of bad programmers and beginners no one wants to work with. If you're a super skilled programmer you're going to get flooded with job offers and people wanting to work on projects with you, trust me. Once you master programming and understand concepts like memory and data science, you're going to realize NFTs themselves are not bad: they're just a tool. And like any tool you can use it in good and bad ways. A hammer can help build a house, and it can also crack someone's skull and help a robber take their money. It's all in how you use it. There are a lot of cash-grabby people trying to use NFTs in distasteful ways that I don't like, personally, but they are still a super powerful tool that can do a lot for the industry and empower indy developers to do things they couldn't do before. And not all companies are like the AAA evil-corp giants. I'm convinced they're doing stupid NFT projects on purpose, and as fast as possible, as a propaganda attack against a new technology that threatens them.

When Microtransactions came about everyone sort of turned a blind eye until it was too late, because before that we were never overwhelmed with sleezy ways to milk money out of people so nobody really thought to fight back against it. Now mtx features are pretty much here to stay in games because the gaming community let it get out of hand, what I see happening with this is that everyone is thankfully on the same page and saying no to this crap BEFORE we let it get out of hand and have it embedded in modern games just as much as microtransactions, nobody wants to see this go the same way microtransactions did.
@CylindricalWhistle
@CylindricalWhistle 2 жыл бұрын
People didn't turn a blind eye. 'Horse armor' got roasted to hell and back and it's still a meme today. Microtransactions have been vocally hated since day one. Lootboxes have even gotten companies into court. It's just that companies don't care if, say, 50% or even 90% of the gaming audience hates microtransactions and doesn't participate. When you have thousands or millions of players, that tiny percentage of buyers who do participate is all they need to turn insane profits. There's not much an average person can really do to change a company's mind when that percentage of people that don't care are carrying the company to the bank anyway.
@grimgrahamch.4157

@@CylindricalWhistle I think the difference is you can make a case for microtransactions. If the game is cheap or better yet, free, then cosmetic microtransactions are fair. There is no such thing as pretend art. Art is art, whether it is good or bad to you, or even incomprehensible to most. However, what they (try to) sell here with NFTs is not even supposed to be art, if they actually sold the sole copyrights to the original art of those items, it could actually be pretty valid idea. Don't mix NFTs with art, just because they are being used with art. At least in art, it actually can make some sense by being able to transfer the copyright of a digital work of art, which can be extremely valuable with some printouts and rights to use them in commercial purposes.

I am one of the few people that enjoyed Ghost Recon Breakpoint despite its flaws. I finished the campaign, completed all the seasonal challenges, completed the operation motherland DLC. I have 250 hours in the game. How anyone could have 600 hours in this game is beyond me. The operation motherland update finally got the community back on board after the terrible launch. The whole NFT thing just burned the community so bad that sentiment towards Ubisoft is lower than it was at launch and made me uninstall the game. The other problem with these NFTs is that a lot of the Ghost Recon community likes to make their player look like an actual military operator. They aren't into golden paint skins on guns or unrealistic apparel so there aren't going to be a lot of people who want these kinds of unique items for their character.

That we'll be left with a handful of companies that have the resources to put out top tear games but those games would be devoid of imagination. The correction for this is to have actual normal gamers involved with a project. Let the people who the product is designed for have some input into it's creation. The problem with item based NFT's (economically speaking) is in game items only have relevancy when the game is widely played and people want the items. Once that ends the item values collapse and thus the item is worthless as it's no longer an investment. This is the same with magic cards and standard format. The only way to make this worthwhile is if NFT items transferred from a game to it's sequel but that leads to gameplay problems of a literal pay to win scheme. The whole thing is a really a disgusting scam that could break the gaming industry as a whole. Also what gamer wants NFT's in their game when NFT's are one of the reasons they cannot get a PS5 or a new graphics card in addition to the chip shortage?

Games around here are becoming more of a job and everyone's looking for the next game so they can jack up prices while it's ripe. I feel like if I play one of these and get hooked, games will be no longer enjoyable for me and it'll become "just another job" in my eyes.

Bro plenty of us know this type of crap is bs. Unfortunately, there's also plenty of ignorant people who just see the "benefits" + FOMO = they think they should jump on the bandwagon before it's too late.

Ubisoft coming out with NFT's and failing feels like when THQ died after bringing out the uDraw peripheral and it bombed so hard they went out of business (though they are back now with THQ Nordiq).

Hearing that these gaming companies are not making money on their greedy business practices or losing money over them is just music to my ears.

You CANNOT give a company that tries to put NFT's in a game a break, that means you CANNOT support a game or buy a game that a company has pulled back on NFT's in a game because 5-6 months down the line when the backlash has died down and the company HAS your money there is nothing stopping them from putting NFT's back in. This shit will not go away unless gamers can actually have a memory longer than 5 minutes and actually keep their money in their pants for a change! Don't buy any Ubisoft game with NFT's, don't buy Stalker 2, don't buy ANY Triple-A game that pulled back or supports NFT's.

NFTs continue to remind me of the "collectable" figurines and coins that my granny used to buy mail order and stick in a cupboard because they were "limited edition" and would thus be valuable one day, right? Spoiler: when she passed, they sold for a tiny fraction of what she paid for them.

The problem is the companies will back off for a year or two then change the name of these mechanics and sneak them in the back door while paying off major news outlets to promote the games they are in.Then somehow people will defend them and say the games good just avoid 60% of the thing you purchased.

Don't worry, if you remember, this is how DLC started. Ubisoft and the other companies will push it till it's accepted.

I don't see NFTs catching on, it's too abstract among other things for the average, or even niche consumers. I think the NFT craze will crash and burn, probably sooner than later.

NFTs make sense for a decentralized blockchain based game like Axie Infinity where purchasing the Axie character NFT lets you play to earn crypto - this stuff here makes no sense and is clearly a cash grab
