It's a loophole. In Jersey there is nothing to stop someone from selling a car and the new owner doesn't register it. The car remains under the previous owners name. I sold a car and a few years later I get a fat towing & storage bill because the car was abandoned somewhere. It was still under my name.

How do they differentiate legitimate tags issued by a dealership that has its business operation out of state? Most dealerships that operate out of state would issue transit tags that's good for 30 days to a customer that doesn't reside in the state where the car is purchased. When a person with a legitimate tag issued by a dealership is stopped, his or her car is confiscated, that would pose a lot of problems for the car owner. I think the entire exercise which is commendable should be handled on a case by case basis. My consolation here is that YPD is efficient enough and must have considered this concern before embarking on this noble cause. It's a win win for all of us in the long run.

However, you'll need the car in order to get all the information needed to register it. For instance, states that require the passage of a safety or emissions test will require the vehicle to be present to go through this step." Its a process and if the person registers the car then im sure it would be released for the necessary emissions, etc which come later on in the process. Also i don't feel too bad if the cars are towed and left there, people need to learn to do the right thing and not piggyback off society which is what is happening here.

Jay, I’m not sure where you live but I’m a nyc native. You can not register a vehicle here without emissions.. I’m aware this is not the case in for example Covington Georgia. But if the car is taken for no registration and you have no access to it a emission can not be done. We can get insurance on anything anywhere which is why I did not mention that portion. However a car that needs registration and emission is virtually impossible contrary to this report. This is what I was attempting to bring light to with my “stupid question”.
